Blood Rites
There seemed to be no reason behind the series of grisly murders plaguing Orlando. The victims were young and old, women and men, destitute and well-off. Only two shocking similarities linked the deceased; before dying, they had been horribly brutalizedand they were all found with their scalps removed.

Scalpers impossible to put down
I've always liked reading scary books much more than watching scary movies, mostly because I can always slam the book shut if I get too scared. That doesn't work at all with Robert Walker's Scalpers. I could slam it shut, but I couldn't leave it shut -- I had to find out what happened next!
So I spent a couple days scared out of my wits, thinking I saw the shadow of a little man out of the corner of my eye, just where I couldn't get a really good look.
That's how the victims (the few who survived) in this book felt too -- they couldn't quite describe their attackers. It seemed like a hallucination. One man attacks, then he seems to morph into two men, one tall, one small and incredibly hairy, almost a monkey but quite clearly a man.
The attackers are brothers whose very differences bound them together in a twisted weapon wielded against the world in an attempt to "fix" the dwarf brother. They were scalping their victims (hence the title) and killing them in an unholy frenzy. At the beginning of the book, their victim is a female police officer. She survives, but her memories are so strange, she can't really help out her brother officers in their hunt for the Scalpers.
Enter Dean Grant, medical examiner. Grant is a series character for Walker, and each book is just a little grislier than the last. But even Grant, experienced to the point where he should be shock-proof, is horrified by the killings. And he quickly becomes embroiled in the case, providing the reader with a wild ride that, as I said, will keep you awake at night.
As usual, Walker can create the most vile murderers, but still invest them with some tinge of humanity. In this case, the two brothers love each other beyond all reason. Their brotherhood binds them together, then their psychopathy carries them along until their crimes overwhelm their reason. Walker truly created a two-headed beast in Ian and Van.
And lest we get too relaxed, Walker puts a spin on the ending that will leave readers worrying about that dark shadow they almost see when the night is dark and they are all alone. Scary, scary, scary, but a good read with Walker's usual detailed plot.
Four stars, would've given five EXCEPT,
The story was fast paced and gripping. The glaring mistake that disappointed me was that while investigating crime scene, the investigators used "seconal" spray rather than luminol to identify blood. Many would not think twice about this, but as I was so invested in the story, it reminded me that I was only reading a story.I will actively seek out more by this author, because the story was that good and I wish to read five star books.
