Brit crime

Good plot (ritual sacrifice, a maniplative, damaged child and skeletal remains found in a cave) that moved fast enough to hold my interest. Main characters fleshed out and believable. Secondary characters a bit so so, but that didn't spoil it for me. Location was important to plot and to the probablility of the plot in that this could only have happened in a small rural community at a time before every citizen had a national identity number. Narrated intelligently. A very good listen.

Twisty (or twisted?)

I really enjoyed this book which had all sorts of things going on involving murder, weirdos in caves and I.T genius. Well told and if it was on paper, it would have been a great page turner. I couln't wait to find out what happened but when I finished, I wanted more!

i bought it because this narrator guy is brilliant and really brings the book to life for me - sometimes i find it hard to stay with a book on my long drives. fortunately for me in this case, the author is also brilliant. i'm half way through and dying to know what happens in the end.

Not one of my favorites

I would have to agree with Steven. This book was very hard to get through because of the ridiculous characters, none of which had any depth or individualism, just stereotypes. I would also add the narrator was horrid. The accents were so bad they were actually hard to understand and distracting from the story. And I mean all of them, American, Chinese, Irish, Arab, even the one character from Mexico who only appears for a few scenes. It made it very difficult to listen to the book and get throough it.

horrible naive british cartoon version of the US

This book is advertised as a spy thriller, terrorism type book in the likes of Flynn, Baldacci etc. It is clearly written by a brit with little or no actual expericence of the United States. The characters are complete stereotypes and cartoons. The president is a dope, the VP is the secret power behind him and the secret CEO of a huge pharma company. The members of the military are all kooks. The one sane and open minded person is a foreigner on the white house staff. The academics are all knowing open minded independent thinkers. They voluntarily work for USAMRID which is a military organization while ridiculing it. Quit if you dont like it. The terrorists are portrayed as these worldy open mined types who pine for the days of all religions getting along.

Narrator detracts from book

I'm just in the second hour of this book and am sorry that the company that published this audiobook chose T. Ryder Smith to read it. The first-person narrator is supposed to be a well-educated, articulate schoolteacher from an equally well-educated Southern family -- no, this isn't an oxymoron -- yet he mispronounces too many words that he should know. In addition, his southern accent rings false. (For example, who says "uman" for "human" in the Delta?) Another reader, speaking of yet another audible book narrated by T Rider Smith, says this: "The book is a good, very original story, but the narrator's southern accents are so bad that it warps the entire book. . . . I live in Mississippi and I can assure you that people don't talk like this. It really detracts from what could have been a very enjoyable listen." I agree.

Edit, edit, edit - PLEASE

I downloaded this book for free as a temporary offer via Amazon. Free is free - I understand that there are a lot of newer authors, self-published writers, fewer editors, etc. So my standards differ.

This author has good stories in her - in the hands of a skilled editor, she should/could be a star. But she has added EVERYTHING she can to EVERY CHARACTER in EVERY chapter. Does every primary and secondary character have to have some variation of substance abuse in their history (alcohol, heroin, meth, alcohol again, Rx painkillers, Rx muscle relaxants...)? Exactly how many discrete characters must have OCD (truly, clinically) introduced in ways that contribute little or nothing to the story? Is there anything plausible that a strong, determined law enforcement officer would accept a hand on her bum from her boss AND his boss outright telling her about her insufficiency due to her gender? And that later has nothing to do with anything? Not one, not two, but three discrete examples where - just as character development - we discover that a character either was complicit in hiding true details of someone else's death or was haunted by guilt because they hid the true details about someone's death. (We're talking at least 4 different deaths that are BACKGROUND story, not the murders that are the primary plot of the book).

So --- it was aggravating and distracting. I have stopped reading and deleted other 'free' books when I've seen the 'lack of editing' problem before. However, I *did* finish this book and I did give 2 stars, not 1. The author obviously has strong story concepts. She obviously desires to create sufficient character development so that the story lines are fleshed out. In total, she is an obvious strong writer who will only get better.

The Perfect Fake by Barbara Parker is a thrilling read.

There is not a writer who creates a tantalizing hero like Barbara Parker. ( I admit to being a fan, having read every single one of her books from the Suspicion series through BLOOD RELATIONS. In THE PERFECT FAKE, Tom has a dark past, or so people think, including his former girlfriend. Inside, he's noble and adores his sister, Rose, who owns a map shop. Tom works there, too, and in order to solve a brutal crime, he has to create a map. 'Nuff said, don't want to spoil your read, but the old world research Barbara Parker has done to create this lifelike tale is amazing. I eagerly await Barbara Parker's next novel.

Great book

I thoroughly enjoyed this stand-alone book, as well as any in the Suspicion series that Barber Parker has written. It is obvious she carefully researched the locales as well as ancient map writing (I hate it when there is a good plot ... and then it is ruined by sloppy research/unbelievable events & locales). Great plot. Romance is in the background, so you are not distracted by steamy/unnecessary scenes. Nice twists, action, etc. This book does what a good book should do -- take the reader away into another world. I highly recommend it.

Fast-paced page-turner

If you like reading mysteries about old books or ancient symbols, then you will enjoy this change of pace....a forgery of an old map. This is an exciting fast-paced suspense with some likeable characters and creepy villains. The story starts in Florida and then heads out to sea and then off to London and the Italian Alps. There's plenty of intrigue, a touch of romance, and quite a bit of interesting information on ancient map making.

Pleasant surprise

When I ordered this book I was expecting a paperback and was very pleasantly surprized to receive a hardback book. Book was received timely and in very good condition. This was the first time I order from this seller and will note their name and order from them again. Barbara was one of my favorite authors and she will be missed greatly.

Great Read

This is the kind of murder mystery that I'm always looking for, but unfortunately seldom find. First, it's smart, suspenseful, and well-written, the basic criteria for reading pleasure. In addition, the characters are dimensional and strongly drawn and the author creates a powerful sense of place--in this case a summer house situated on a lake somewhere in the Northeast. Finally, the book is interesting from a family-systems perspective. I found myself looking forward to going to bed each night (when I listen to audio books) to continue the story.

Booooring

I started reading the Kay Scarpetta mysteries about a year ago. The first four were good. the next three were OK, but I liked the Kay Scarpetta character. Then things went downhill quickly. In this novel, in order to help new readers (or because she became incredibly lazy) Cornwell recaps the information form the previous novel..not once, not twice, but three times! I have now switched to Kathy Reichs, whose main character, although a bit indecisive in the romance aspect, is on the money regarding forensics (as is Cornwell), is not in love with her own ego, is not independently wealthy and gives only brief explanations or references to past novels.

Review of THE LAST PRECINCT By Patricia Cornwell

I liked The Last Precinct written by Patricia Cornwell. As a matter of fact I read it twice by mistake. I had evidently read it the first time it came out and when I saw it listed again I got it. Although parts were really familiar, some I was able to read twice and it was like reading it anew. The character Dr. Kay Scarpetta is a great character. She is many- faceted, with a family of interesting characters and friends. Her scenes are intense and the sinister characters are chilling. Although I might read it again (hope not as the really familiar scenes will be too much) I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I don't want to forget her detective friend and often pain in the butt, Pete Marino, he could have a book of his own.

Tedious at the start

This book picks right up from the previous installment, Black Notice, so I recommend that you read that one first. The first few chapters are a bit tedious as Kay Scarpetta goes through a lot of introspection from almost being murdered in Black Notice. I was hoping for more action and it slowly comes around, but not to the same suspense as the earlier books of the series that made me turn page after page.

I think if you are a Scarpetta series fan, you'd like this book, as you've been bringing the history of Kay, Benton, Lucy and Marino along with you. I think many reviewers here are a bit harsh, even though this is not as good as the first few in the series. If you are new to the series, this would probably be a 3 star book.

Riveting

Really interesting plot that grips you instantly and constantly has you second guessing the conclusion. Unfortunately, the voice of the reader is SO irritating that I was switched off within seconds. I persevered to the end but wish I had simply read the book. I wouldn't buy another audible book read by Scott Brick.

Vetry Enjoyable Book

My husband and I both really enjoyed this book.We listened to it on the way to our recent vacation and on the way back.All the time during the vacation I was trying to work out the ending.We have a very slow truck which we use for holidays and the story made the driving time fly.No possible chance of falling asleep at the wheel.The book has a wonderful twist in the ending and is ultimately satisfying as the underdog / good guy wins in the end.

Disappointing

My first Jeffrey Archer book. The basic idea of the plot was good (if a bit far-fetched) and the detail seemed well researched. However, the narration was plodding which made the whole thing drag though I hung on to the end. The overall impression was that it was aimed at a juvenile audience.

Didnt expect this to be any good as im not too keen on Jeffrey Archer, but it was a really good story! Would definitely recommend this one. Im now going to look for other books by him

A Prisoner of Birth

A good plot, as are all Archer's books, but spoiled by the poor quality of his writing. The dull, monotonous delivery of the narrator did little to drive it along. All in all - disappointing.

Love the series...love Ellie Quick. I have read/listened to the entire series (except for Murder by Suicide & Murder by Committee) and would read them again. I felt like I was there in the story watching, not just reading about it.
