"Alice Blanchard writes so well." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Engrossing novel....The reader is...captivated by Blanchard's lucid descriptions, compelling takes on the challenges and heartache of degenerative disease, schizophrenia, and abuse, action-packed drama, and believable, believably conflicted, characters." (Publishers Weekly)

    Book OK but narrator???
I would rate this book as only an average mystery--plot fairly predictable and characters equally stereotypical. Don't think the author ever lived in Vermont since her descriptions are not entirely accurate--and always derogatory.
The narrator reads incredibly SLOWLY--a bit annoying at the beginning, she sounds as though she is reading to elementary age children...sample before you buy. Wish I had.
    Stupid, Stupid, Stupid
This book has to have the stupidest cop I've ever known in Jack. He checks a serial killer out of prison---all on his own---then takes him out to the woods and gives him a lit cigarette? I was rooting for him to be killed for being so absolutely DUMB. I can't believe how bad this book was after listening to "The Breathtaker" by the same author. Yeeeeeesh!!!!!!
    Just a Bad Book
Would you try another book from Alice Blanchard and/or Susan Denaker?
    Not Alice Blanchard
Would you ever listen to anything by Alice Blanchard again?
    No
What didnt you like about Susan Denakers performance?
    Stiff
    Any additional comments?
This was simply a bad book. The story line was incoherent with too many offshoots. It was like trying to visit Antarctica with a side trip to the Arctic. Was it a murder mystery? A psychological thriller? A medical mystery? A child abuse exploration? Hard to tell with the hash this book mixed together. Scene after scene didn't tie together smoothly.
The writing was trite with badly and overused adjectives. Frankly, it was simply boring,

Desperately trying to get back to where he was just a day before, Bolden must re-learn the survival skills of his hardscrabble boyhood. But as Bolden, with just $11 in his pocket and hunters all around him, survives one violent, harrowing hour after another, he makes a series of startling discoveries: about a mysterious woman wanted for murder; about an astounding secret rooted in history, among the country's Founding Fathers and families; about a conspiracy lurking in the darkest corners of corporate America...and a deadly plan that only he can stop. And in the process, maybe Bolden will also find out who he really is.
Furiously paced, filled with brilliantly drawn characters from politicians to patriots, from Wall Street players to battle-hardened cops, The Patriots Club is vintage Reich: brilliant, breathtaking, and impossible to put down until the final unforgettable page is turned.

    "Action-packed." (Publishers Weekly)

    Four Stars
Enjoyed, good research always pays off. Reich has definitely joined my "author read list"! DCR
    Disappointing....
I like this author and having read his latest, Rules of Deception, I noted that he had written this book which I had missed. Sadly, it could have stayed that way and I would be none the worse off.
One gets the feeling that Mr. Reich was in a hurry to write this book and in doing so he develops a scattershot storyline with a variety of characters who seem more ready for the psychiatrist's couch than for the more serious job of directing the country in a sub rosa manner.
The "Club" has invited the newly elected president of the United States to join their ranks. She has declined. Therefore she must be eliminated and why not do it on innauguration day?
How this plan is discovered and dealt with has it's moments, but they are too few and too far between. I bought this book from an Amazon bookseller, and if you care to read it, I would suggest you save your money and do the same.
Not up to Reich's prior standards at all
Reich's prior books I'd read benefited from straightforward and credible plots. This book has a plot that's way more convoluted and roundabout -- and more unlikely. I'm giving it 3 stars only because he's a good writer and because - as in all his books - the financial/banking details are fascinating and probably accurate. That his unarmed hero could keep getting away from these "all-knowing" and "all-powerful" forces strains credulity!
Think carefully about whether you want to spend 2 long evenings reading 540 pages that should have been more like 350.
    One of the best
I have read several of these books by Christopher Reich and have always found them
to be great reading, I have read the three books featuring Jonathan & Emma Ransom
but then the series stopped. The other books are great but i miss the Ransom books.
But what ever this author writes makes great reading.
    Excellent novel.
Kept you guessing on some things and was a little too obvious in others. An interesting take on the history of the presidency. One of those books with an uneven pace but in an interesting way.

...but that ain't all bad. I really enjoyed this complicated fare with a predictable ending. The writing was tight; the dialogue crisp; and the plot, while sporting many loopholes, still kept me interested. I've never heard of the author before, but definitely someone to watch for. A good listening experience.
    From a Philadelphian.....
The story was very good, but the narrator consistently pronounced the name of the local road as the "Shoekill" Expressway instead of the "Schoolkill" Expressway. Annoying considering how important the setting of Philadelphia is to the story....

Writing with the grace and force that have earned him praise as "the poet laureate of the crime world", George Pelecanos has created a novel about two scarred and human people who must navigate one of life's most brutal passages. It is an unforgettable, moving, even shocking story that will leave no reader unchanged.

    unlistenable
I can't tell you much about the story as the narrator spends so much effort -annunciating- -words- -clearly- -and- -distinctly- that there is no pace, no image, no story being created. I got bored.
A shame, because the other Pelecanos stories are a pleasure.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ricky Smith was once a small-town loser. Then he went to Las Vegas, jumped out the window of a burning hotel, lived to tell the tale, and tore up the Strip on an incredible winning streak. Ricky didn't just win at one slot machine or table game. He won at blackjack, roulette, and craps, and then beat the pants off the world's greatest poker player. Tony knows that goofy, loudmouthed Ricky Smith, or anyone else for that matter, couldn't possibly be that fortunate. But when "Mr. Lucky" returns home to the little town of Slippery Rock, North Carolina, he keeps on winning everything from a horse race to a $50,000 lottery.
Hired by a desperate casino, Tony starts to pry into Ricky's past, his friends, and the strange little town that is benefiting from Ricky's fame and fortune. Unfortunately for Tony, his cover is blown when he is forced to reveal a trick he has up his own sleeve: a pocket Glock he can shoot with laser-like precision. Suddenly, two men are dead, the cops are on Tony's tail, and the investigation explodes in violence, putting the lives of Tony's son and his young family in danger.
Against a neon-tinted backdrop of adrenaline rushes, hard crashes, big money, and high-wire tension, the inimitable James Swain has set his best Tony Valentine novel yet: a funny, furious ride with an astounding array of crooks, marks, and one killer scam.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this series about gambling, the main character is a big winner. Mr. Swain's likeable detective hero is Tony Valentine...and he has some neat tricks up his sleeve." (The New York Times)
"If all Swain had going for him was a dynamite premise (inside dope on how casino games work) this series would still be good fun, but he adds all the sinew we look for in the best caper novels: quirky characters on both sides of the law who constantly surprise us with just the right mix of comedy, violence, and humanity." (Booklist)

Lucky Is As Lucky Does & Very Entertaining!
Is Mr. Lucky what he appears to be, the world's luckiest man on an unbelievable winning streak? Tony Valentine and his son Gerry are about to discover the answer to this question. Swain takes on many adventures with them as they investigate Mr Lucky. Along the way he will have the reader asking, "What would I do in this situation?"
If you haven't read a Swain book before prepare yourself for an entertaining read and an introspective look at life and your own morality. The twists and turns of this novel will have you reading as much and as quickly as possible. I highly recommend Swain's writing!
    It's fun, but stretches believability
The Tony Valentine series is great fun, due mainly to Swain's knowledge of casino security and cheating. Where Mr. Lucky and the series fall short are in the believability of the central conflicts -- the crimes that drive the plots. The protagonist's son Gerry, for example, is a bumbling loser trying to make good, yet he has miraculous good fortune as he out-maneuvers three thugs and dispatches them in extraordinary fashion.
I'm all for suspending disbelief, but some of the plot points make that a rigorous challenge.
Great fun on the beach -- or the flight to Vegas -- but not in the league of Robert B. Parker or John D.

    A Mess
A nearly incomprehensible story of a research project in Jamaica where British intelligence, innocent academics, commercial interests, and a poorly-characterized primitive tribal cult intersect. Hijinks follow. Ludlum was clearly in his formative years with this one, but since it is only available in this abridged edition, it is hard to tell how much the abridging process disfigured the original story. One fatal flaw that is certainly Ludlum's is his insistence on referring to Jamaicans by their race. "The black man got into the car", "the two blacks followed Alex", etc. Thank goodness times have changed and we no longer teel compelled to use skin color as a handy label.

    Members Reviews:
Good story, but the editing drove me crazy!
I really enjoyed this story and I plan to look for more by Shane Johnson. But the editing (or lack of) drove me crazy! Many times apostrophes were neglected leaving "were" instead of "we're" and "shell" instead of "she'll". The editor regularly used a style of grammar that was awkward, allowing this arrangement of words:"...Terrorist actions ALL HAD wrought their effects" instead of "...terrorist actions HAD ALL wrought their effects". Every time I encountered this (nearly every page) I had to turn it around in my head. I wanted to get out my red pen and do some mark up!!!! And a shame, too. Because the story held together pretty well, otherwise.
An honest look at a possible future.
First off, the only problems I had with the book were keeping the multitude of characters straight in my mind. Otherwise, it was a very honest look at the growing problems in the Middle East and the U.S. It shows the harsh reality of the ideology behind Islamic fanaticism. This is not Arabs, per se, as not all Arabic people are Islamic. As in all religions, there are people who consider themselves muslims who don't hold fast to their religion's ideology, but have their own, altered version of the religion. One such couple is also a part of the novel.
The moral and spiritual degradation of the U.S. is also a large theme of the novel and reflects well a possible outcome of our moral decline as a nation. It is truly frightening, even more so than the terrorists, in some ways.
After the escalating terrorist attacks on Israel, they finally respond to the religious enemy who seeks their annihilation, by using a nuclear response. Previously, a terrorist nuke was set off in the U.S., showing that the terrorists had access to those weapons now and would not hesitate to use them. The nuclear response is not shown as perfectly okay, but is shown as an act of Israel's national defense against the religious forces that seek their destruction.
The terrorists and those who support them will, of course, hate this novel for revealing the truth of their agenda. And they will also hate how Israel finally strikes back at them in the novel. This general theme is all laid out in prophecy and is now coming to pass. Mr. Johnson's novel is a vision of how this could possibly play out, and is also about the deepening spiritual and moral blindness of the U.S. It should serve as a wake-up call to all of us.
Well told and engaging tale of the near future.
This is an excellent book and is set in the near future.

A seasoned photojournalist, Bess Grady has honed her craft in the trouble spots of the world. But witnessing the horrors of Somalia and Sarajevo hasn't prepared her for what waits in a small-town paradise - as an easy assignment turns into a desperate journey into fear.
Sunlight bathes the town square. A balmy breeze is blowing. Yet nothing else is as it should be. The unimaginable has happened here, and Bess Grady and her sister Emily have unwittingly stumbled right into the middle of it. As chaos and confusion reign, Emily disappears, Bess is taken captive - and escape seems impossible. But when rescue comes from a totally unexpected source, Bess is unprepared for the chilling truth.

It is the brainchild of ruthless conspirators whose next target may be the heartland of the United States. Now Bess must join forces with the intimidating stranger who led her out of Tenajo, a man whose motives are suspect, whose alliances are unclear, and whose methods have a way of leaving bodies in his wake. For she will do anything - risk everything - to find her sister, to keep her family safe, and to stop the conspirators from completing their carefully orchestrated plan of destruction.
    Members Reviews:
    Should have been better
Faced with constant life or death situations as part of an overall terrorist blackmail plot which threatens thousands of lives, the heroine constantly refuses advice of the CIA operative who saved her life. Her actions which, I suspect were meant to signify forceful independence, come across as self centered obstinacy. She is originally presented as a caring person. This makes the constant refusals to protect the one thing that would save innocent lives difficult to accept as true. That the CIA and the Center for Disease Control would let her goes beyond belief.
Another great book from Iris Johansen
I have always enjoyed books by this author, but this one was quite outstanding. I had a hard time turning this one off once I got startted. The narrator also did a great job on this one, as she did on Critical Judgement, which was also a great read. If you are in to suspenseful mysteries then I suggest you check this one out.
    didnt like music or narrator
really didnt like the addition ofcthe music..or that the narrator didnt change her voice for each character...made it very confusing.
    Eve Duncan renamed Bess Grady
I started listening to this author's books with the Eve Duncan and Sarah Patrick series. I love Ms. Johansen's story ideas and character development, but find her writing skills lacking. She uses the same phrases ad nauseum (fill in the blank feeling surged through her and XYZ shrugged off her backpack) and she uses big words awkwardly where a simpler term is more appropriate. It reminds me of days in high school when I would try to use "fancy words" to make my writing sound older. I find the lead character, Bess Grady, in this book to be Eve Duncan renamed (or the other way around, I'm not sure which book was written first). IMHO, Ms. Johansen should use that wonderful knack for character development to do just that, develop another character.
