Members Reviews:
Still a favourite.
Read this for the first time in 2008. It was my first taste of "Indian fiction," and it hooked me from the start. Anju --the main character, is witty and a good guide through the conflicting world of her traditional upbringing and her modern ideas, and while towards the end the story is rushed I still think it does a good fictional representation of the hunt for a husband and the pressure daughters face to appear and behave a certain way to attract the "right" sort of husband.
The cover praises it as "sex and the city with saris and spices," but I wouldn't go that far. If anything, Anju is a more traditional and less klutzy Bridget Jones. If you want to try a different girly summer read, this might be it.
for Entertainment Purposes
This absolutely delightful story was totally entertaining and inspiring. I was captivated from the very first paragraph and often found myself drawing similarities between her struggles and those of myself and other women friends. Written in a way that makes it possible to relate her struggle to find Mr Right, while balancing family expectations and personal expectations, regardless of any social and cultural differences from East to West.
No good
I read the reviews here and purchased the book. Felt cheated, it is a waste of money and time. Utterly boring, and fake. The protagonist is supposed to be from India, but her descriptions of India sound like it is her first visit to an exotic land.
Four Stars
I liked the way the book progressed, but felt the ending was rushed.
Not Disappointed
Anju, the protagonist, is searching for a husband. The practical side of husband searching can be appreciated, as Anju is not altogether pre occupied with love. Anyone who enjoys a degree of personal freedom from their parents stands to be utterly frustrated by Anju's overbearing, overprotective parents. As an American I enjoyed reading about all the different aspects of a culture with which I've had limited experience. However, I just couldn't help but wonder the whole time if Bombay parents truly act as Anju's had or if hers was an isolated case.
