8 hours in, and going no further
I hate to write reviews when I haven't finished an audiobook, especially for something as well-regarded as Bright of the Sky, which has received wonderful reviews in written form. But the truth is, 8 hours in, the book was nothing but dull. The reading was competent, and the prose was fine - nothing particularly blatant or awkward stood out to make this book annoying, but this book had the feel of a first novel in a very long series. The character development is drawn out, and not particularly revelatory, as the same few individuals continue to mull over the same concerns over and over again.
The whole purpose seems to be to get you eight hours in, to where the action really starts and the main character begins his journey. I got there, and I was still bored. The world building didn't seem as fresh as many reviewers indicated, and I didn't care much about the characters, who were all a bit on the anti-social misfit side of the spectrum. I might try this again, especially in book form, but it just doesn't grab me the way that other epic science fiction on Audible does.
    A lot of fun
Enjoyed this entire series. Not the character depth that I would have liked, but a good story and characters you can root for. I'm always looking for a sci fi/fantasy book that hits the right note. It's not the best book I've ever read/listened to but it filled a need. If you go into it with the right expectations then you won't be disappointed.
Ugh. Just Not Getting This One...
Some story concepts are just too complex to enjoy the story, and this one is just that.
Honestly, I've read a LOT of high brow scifi that WARRANTED such exercise, and was WORTH it.
    Sorry, this on isn't.
If you can comfortably get your head around this one enough to enjoy, then completely ignore this review, take some aspirin, and buy it.
    This is an awesome read!
The story is so well written, the world building so interesting.

    Members Reviews:
Maybe the best of the series
First off let me say read the books in order, don't start here. While the author does give a lot of background and set up you really do yourself a disservice if you start here.
With that said I believe in many ways this is the best books of the series (at least through the first 5 or so). Many of the characters really hit their stride. This book in many ways is the basis for major plot events of the books to come.
While it does set the stage it never wastes your time or bores you. As with the past books there is action, and drama with tons of politics and universe building.
As has been the case all along Snyder continues with his A game and helps bring the story to life.
Overall a really enjoyable story, one well worth listening to.
    Confusing start, awesome ending
Ms. Rusch's 3rd book in this series, and there are so many things going on, it's hard to figure out what happened and why, and not much explanation for the opening 6 or so chapters.
The rest of the book plays much better, and wraps up with an awesome ending.
    Jay Snyder's performance brings a 3-star book up to a 4.
    Best so far
I really liked this one. So far it is the best book in the series. The tension between Noelle and Flint continues to grow as they try to sort out how they feel about each other.
I liked the mystery aspect and the depth in which it was explored by Flint. His honor and ability to sleep at night are seriously on the line. It is this aspect that made the story interesting to me, I could use a lot more of that type of story. Action, conflict, mystery and more action.
The politics in this book did get on my nerves; I could do without all the back and forth about alien politics.
Confusing start, great middle, weak ending
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Rusch does a great job in developing her characters and the story line is compelling and interesting. The narrator does a good job with the different voices. The beginning was a bit confusing, but the end was done in a rather fast manner and left you hanging with a lot of questions and loose ends; which is too bad as the novel itself was very good.
Would you be willing to try another book from Kristine Kathryn Rusch? Why or why not?
I will try book 4 and hope the ending will be better.
Have you listened to any of Jay Snyders other performances before? How does this one compare?
He is a good narrator with different voices.
Did Consequences inspire you to do anything?
    Not really
    So interesting and fast paced.
This series is so interesting. Everything makes sense even though it is science fiction.

    Publisher's Summary:
Venus is a primitive world. But on Mars, early hominids evolved civilization earlier than their earthly cousins, driven by the needs of a harsh world growing still harsher as the initial terraforming ran down. Without coal, oil, or uranium, their technology was forced onto different paths, and the genetic wizardry of the Crimson Dynasty united a world for more than 20,000 years.
Now, in a new stand-alone adventure set in this world's AD 2000, Jeremy Wainman is an archaeologist who has achieved a lifelong dream: to travel to Mars and explore the dead cities of the Deep Beyond, searching for the secrets of the Kings Beneath the Mountain and the fallen empire they ruled.
Teyud Zha-Zhalt is the Martian mercenary the Terrans hire as guide and captain of the landship Intrepid Traveller. A secret links her to the deadly intrigues of Dvor il-Adazar, the City That Is a Mountain, where the last aging descendant of the Tollamune Emperors clings to the remnants of his power...and secrets that may trace their origin to the enigmatic Ancients, the Lords of Creation who reshaped the Solar System in the time of the dinosaurs.
When these three meet, the foundations of reality will be shaken - from the lost city of Rema-Dza to the courts of the Crimson Kings.

    Story Without an End
After buying more than 300 books from Audible, this was my first listen to science fiction. Though the story was a bit choppy at times, I found my interest growing as it closed in on what I hoped would be a good ending. It proved to be a waste of time because there was no ending. In fact part 2 ended so abruptly and left so many questions unanswered, that I was certain I had forgotten to download Part 3. There is no Part 3! I suggest you not waste or money and certainly not a credit.
    Martian political thriller
Taking place in the same alternate history setting as the novel The Sky People, but 12 years latter and on Mars, I found the story to be very entertaining.
While the theme of the series (research into the Lords of Creation) was carried over from the first book, there was also an emphasis on the Marian political system and the "Game of Thrones" intrigues.
A prior review mentioned that they found the narration irritating. I personally did not have any problem with the narrators voice, or the characterizations. I had little difficulty telling which character said which line.
    I love this novel
I think this story is just brillant. I am on my third listening of this story. You should listen to the Sky People first, but this one is even better. Give it six stars on the five star scale.
    Comic book time
It's like a comic book without the drawings. It also wants to be a hot romance. Ugh. Very thin in details, very glossy-ish.
    Great homage
This book makes wonderful references to many previous Martian novels, from Barsoom to Heinlein. I found the veiled references to these other classics fun and clever. A good continuation of the previous books playing on Carson of Venus and other Venutian novels. I also enjoyed decifering the Martian language. When a pirate says, "The knowledge of the dead is lost to entropy." I laughed out loud, and got some strange looks.

The best I've listened to this year!
What did you love best about To the Stars?
The adventure, the story, and the ending.
What was one of the most memorable moments of To the Stars?
Traveling through space and not aging, the esprit de corp of the navigation officers.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Great voices, and characters, wonderful cast!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The first time he came back to earth, Gand the changes in civilization.
    Any additional comments?
Great book, I can see where Robert Heinlien learned his craft, since Hubbard was his mentor.
    Really enjoyed it!!
Had a very good time from the start.
Very interesting story. I liked his style.
    Great story!
It's a great read of science fiction with a logical and intriguing story where romance lasts forever!
One of the best audio books
One of the best books ever written. Incredible. Character development that could rival Game of Thrones combined with a great audio performance and sound effects makes an excellent audiobook.
    To the Stars
This was a great story. The drama was really pulling me along intermixed with some great action. But then at the end -- I totally was not expecting that!

i will not buy abriged again
Would you try another book from Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and/or Marina Sirtis?
    yes i love their books
    Any additional comments?
having read the book then listening to the abriged audio book u lose alot of the story i will only buy the unabriged book from now on i want the whole book not parts of one
    Poorly Abridged
What disappointed you about Powers That Be?
I loved this book and thought I'd try the audio version. The way that "The Ship Who Searched" was abridged was pretty good (or at least kept the story continuity) so I thought it was worth a shot to try this one. It was so badly abridged that even though it's been years since I read the full book I had no trouble missing what they took out. The story no longer makes anywhere near as much sense as the full book.
What was most disappointing about Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough s story?
I have no problem with the story... in fact I love it... it is the way that it was abridged that I have a problem with.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Marina Sirtis did a pretty good job of narrating. She, in my opinion, mispronounced some of the words, but having seen her on Star Trek TNG I'd say it is just her accent.
    Any additional comments?
I really wish they would do this book in an Unabridged format.
    A Favorite
Would you try another book from Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and/or Marina Sirtis?
I certainly would try another book from the petaybee series
If you???ve listened to books by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough before, how does this one compare?
This one has always been a favorite. I love the recording, but it was overly abridged. A lot is left out and the story almost wouldn't make any sense if you had never read the unabridged version.
What does Marina Sirtis bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
Marina Sirtis was the perfect choice as a narrator for this story.
    Welcome to a new world
Great story, incredibly well developed characters, wonderfully textured narration, and a new world that's remarkably like Alaska.
    Frustrating
What would have made Powers That Be better?
It needed more of the original story
What was most disappointing about Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough s story?
It was hard to follow the story line because it didn't flow right.

    Well written
This book has everything I like in a novel, the characters were well constructed, and imaginative. The storyline seemed so real I looked out my window just to make sure that it was not happening. Great story and great writing.
compelling, yet alarming.. a prehistory to take not of..
compelling yet alarming pre-history of the world..
ok ok, so i wanted to grab attention or something..
the Stone Age book grabs your attention.. it might be an advertising "infomercial" for survival food distributors..
this is no terrorist EMP story it has the ring of reality, especially given that we're in a solar maximum time right now..
[play background music here: "stormy weather"]
the author writes about things or places he knows, thats good.. if/when i decided to give authorship a shot i'll draw on personal experience too..
fast moving, interesting characters, diverse settings..
i can just feel the lake house and the crisp air with a slight pine scent, a bit humid in the cooling evening.. family and house guests wandering to and fro some getting ready for dinner and bed, others preparing to leave and go back to the city or elsewhere.. much like late summer at clear lake, calif after a week at the lake house getting ready to head back to reality in 1970's San Francisco..
zooming back in my '66 XKE, over the hill to 101 and then south..
these characters are not going anyplace civilized.. chicago..?! o'hare..? not civilized..
and baja and the sea of cortez.. i think the author has it about right.. pay off the policia and thugs to leave you alone.. i see how THAT worked out for max..
all in all this is a good read and for you, dear reader, to NOT take the embedded warning to heart makes you some sort of fool..
Very good end of world story.
Having read many the world is ending years ago. Stone age seems more relevant than a lot I have read.
    A great story teller!!!
Can't wait for more! A great story teller, your friends want to know when are you going to stop reading your kindle?! Answer: when I fall asleep or finish!!! Nuff said...
    great story
Really good story line and great writing. This a well thought out story and you like the characters immediately. I read many books of this genre and enjoyed this immensely. I hope the next book is as good. Fun additions to other sites throughout this story make it worth reading this book.

It's nice to see a series of novels based on the movies for Marvel, considering that they had quit releasing them when the movies come out. That was always one of the things I enjoyed. The fact that these are written for young adults means they are an easy read.

Weve found another Earthlike planet, but what secrets does it hold?
The entire world is thrilled by the discovery of a new, Earthlike planet. Advance imaging shows that the planet has oceans of water and a breathable, oxygen-rich atmosphere. Eager to learn more, an exploration team is soon dispatched to explore the planet, now nicknamed New Earth.
All the explorers understand that they are essentially on a one-way mission. The trip takes 80 years each way, so even if they are able to get back to Earth, nearly 200 years will have elapsed. They will have aged only a dozen years thanks to cryonic suspension, but their friends and family will be gone, and the very society they once knew will have changed beyond recognition. The explorers are going into exile, and they know it. They are on this mission not because they were the best available but because they were expendable.
Upon landing, the team discovers something unexpected: New Earth is inhabited by a small group of intelligent creatures who look very much like human beings. Who are these people? Are they native to this world or invaders from elsewhere? While they may seem inordinately friendly to the human explorers, what are their real motivations? What do they want?
Moreover, the scientists begin to realize that this planet cannot possibly be natural. They face a startling and nearly unthinkable question: Could New Earth be an artifact?

Interesting plot, dated and simplistic writing.
Interesting plot, dated and simplistic writing. This book reads like it was written in the 1950s not 2013. Think Ring World. I like cute women as much as the next guy, but despite a token effort to include women with actual roles, all female characters remained undeveloped sex object accessories to the end. Every description it women was about their attractiveness. Also unmalicious use of national stereotypes occurred at multiple points. I thought this was supposed to be an adult book, but I think it would be suitable for 12 year olds. It wasn't without merit, I got to the end and was happy to read, but no masterpiece at all I'm afraid.
    Not my thing
This book has a message that I agree with but it felt really heavy handed in its delivery. I felt like I was being brow beaten for quite a bit of the listen. The characters seemed somewhat flat and occasionally annoying and the story felt rushed. For example, The main character who arrives on a new planet, finds the perfect woman and they area happily a couple by day #2 !? I mean.. come on, even Kirk didn't work this fast!. :) There should have been more of a buildup and some more time given to the characters to make you feel anything for them. There are a couple scientists that are so hardheaded when the "truth" starts to be revealed that I find them unbelievable and their conversion happens in the speed of turning on a lightbulb. Theres a secondary distracting storyline that takes place on or near earth thats dont really contribute to the plot, and felt should have been left out for the most part. The performance was done very well I just wish he had better material to read.
    I wanted more to happen
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
    Yes.

    Molles In The High Castle
    THE DEVIL'S LETTUCE
When P.K.D. wrote The Man in The High Castle in 1962, you would have thought their would have been imitations. I am guessing a book about the United States being split up between Japan and Germany was too controversial and seem to unpatriotic to even think about. In today's time with a plethora of books about the United States being run over by Zombies, maybe we can imagine, a United States being run by China and Russia. Maybe another split between the North and South?
    Deleted Scene
This is more just a scene and a set up, but not a story. Molles gives us just a taste of what is to come. It is a tasty morsel and most who listen to this freebie will be buying the first book in the series. I know I will
    Good prequel story
Interesting prequel. It definitely has me curious about A Growers War. Good storyline and good narration.
    quick hitter, strong emotional response
for a short title, I really enjoyed the look into this conquered America. The characters Molles inserts in are seen in a brief period that still evokes strong emotional response. I'd definitely keep reading.
    Too much swearing
Good story, but the non stop curse words were a bit distracting. Hopefully the next one has a little less of that filler.
    Excellent Teaser
Just enough meat to leave me wanting more. Kind of a Red Dawn vibe to it. Showed the frustration of the oppressed through the eyes and actions of the two boys. One representing the people who chafe under the thumb of their captors and ready to take action. The other meek and submissive as so many are, despite saying otherwise. Despite being hardened soldiers, the oppressors also have a human side as well, in not killing two boys when so many cruel soldiers would have. Promises to be a good story.
