3 QUESTIONS to PHONIQUE:

Q: Your mix goes back to 1983, that´s a history of 35 years electronic music. Tell us about your influences.

A: I am from a small city in West-Germany and without internet back then I had to rely on our local DJ. Luckily we had Andreas Schneider, who was way ahead of every other DJ in our area back then and played House music already in 1987. So I sneaked out from home to go to his parties and the following week I spend my savings to buy some of the records he played. When I got my first scooter I chekced out clubs in other cities like Königsburg in Krefeld, Ratinger Hof and Relax in Düsseldorf or Plastique in Duisburg. When turning 18 I travelled every school holidays to Paris to go to Le Boys and later Rex Club, where DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier were two of the resident DJs.

Q: You´re a pioneer of the early days as a DJ and producer for about 20 years now. What has been the greatest achievement for you?

A: I could probably write a book about all things happened in the past 20/30 years. Sometimes I feel I am responsible for the downfall of what people call Deep House these days. I produced and played all kinds of House music since the beginning from Disco to technoish and Minimal House, but somehow my vocal productions seem to caught the most attention. Probably having a unique vocalist like Erlend Oye (Kings Of Convenience / Whitest Boy Alive) on my first album and producing his DJ Kicks for Studio !K7 left a mark and this was helping to win multiple DJ awards as Best Deep House Artist at Beatport and Ibiza DJ Awards in 2008 and 2010 while my idols Charles Webster, Francois K or Jimpster left empty handed. I always felt that they would have deserved it way more, but what I didnt know is that the face of Deep House should change more and more over the following years and al of a sudden people consider Robin Schulz as a deep house artist. But anyways I am pretty proud of tracks like "For The Time Being" or "Vincent Price" but also of some of my mixes. When you are listening to my mix for this How I Met The Bass series you will hopefully recognize how much effort I put in mixes and I am glad there are enough people out there appreciating this. Those people are also the reason for my biggest achievment: still being around in this business for more than 20 years now.

Q: What are you currently working on and which future Phonique projects are on the way?

A: I am always working on some new club tracks and remixes, but I am also mentoring a young dj/producer talent from Odessa by the name Belkina. On top of that I have the crazy idea of transforming my best vocal tracks into accoustic songs (into a Kings Of Convenience style) for an album format. Looking for a music director for this project at the moment.

Q: Thanks for the epic storyteller. Tell us in a few words: How did you meet the bass once?

A: If you mean about the club scene, the first moment I was amazed by the atmosphere and the vibe of a club was from a party that happened to my hometown every sunday! The club name was "Nani Nani" and the DJ was John Valavanis! But in general my first love in electronic music was Trip Hop and Drum n Bass! So artists like Stereo Nova, Ltj Bukem, Dj Krush and DJ Shadow were a big influence to my music.

Q: You´re born and raised in Thessaloniki/Greece. How would you describe the development of electronic music in your city/country?

A: From the late 1990's till 2009 there were a lot of things happening here regarding the club scene! After the economic crisis most of the clubs were closed! Things started to moving a bit more the last 2-3 years but it still needs work to be done and people to follow and support the scene.

Q: Talking about the present. You recently released your album "Nebula" and the remixes on Upon.You. Which further projects are coming up soon?

A: My "Ossain" EP will come to the newborn label of Chaim and Jenia Tarsol "Blue Shadow" and another EP to be confirmed on MicroCastle! Also my remix for Kiko Navarro at BBE music is coming up on April and my remix for Argy at Rebirth records on May.

3 QUESTIONS to TOM FLYNN:

Q: Your mix is a journey from the past to the present. What do these older tracks still mean to you?

A: They symbolise important moments in my life, times where they made me really appreciate the power and emotion of music and how it can transcend anything. I have to say this is one of the best mix ideas i’ve been asked to do. I knew some of the tracks I would select and I've been keeping some in mind the last few weeks. I tried to go from the earliest up to the last few years, it’s impossible to get in all you want but the records I've chosen have always stood out for me and hold a special place in my heart.

Q: At the end of your set you´re representing your latest release. Please tell us more about.

A: I wrote those tracks a long time ago, one of them I wrote about 3 or 4 years ago, but i knew I liked them. I forgot about them for a while, then I was going through some tracks and found them, I took them with me on holiday and I thought ok I like these, especially pluck. Later that night I saw a flyer for Steve Bug on a wall, he was playing and I thought ok I should send them him, he might like them. The Pluck track I think was really influenced by me listening to a lot of electronic jazz at the time, I like making things that are out of time, things that don’t really make sense. The other 2 tracks were tracks I’d wrote a while back and I just liked them, they’re not like the stuff I’m writing now but they spoke to me in some fashion, and with Steve saying he liked them I thought ok that’s cool, I respect Steve and that means a lot so lets do it.

Q: Which further projects are coming in 2018?

A: I have an EP on Carl Craigs label, Planet e, as well as something coming on Maceo Plex’s label, we’re just deciding if it will be Ellum or Lone Romantic. There’s also another track on a Fabric compilation I’ve just signed which nobody has heard yet. I’m hoping to release more on my own label, Into Orbit, later this year too. I’m sitting on a lot of new music!

Q: Talking about your mix. How did these early tracks influence your later doings?

A: First of all thanks for inviting me to your program. This mix includes some old tracks that have marked my career and that define my characteristic style because there are synths, atmospheres, voices, some acid sounds and, of course, a Techno rhythm. For me all are tracks full of soul.

Q: You´re born, raised and still living in Barcelona. What makes the city so special, also concerning the electronic music scene?

A: Barcelona is influenced by many artists and cities such as Berlin. It is a place that absorbs others art, a characteristic that makes of Barcelona a rich, sensorial, amazing city full of art. It's sky, it's sea and it's multicultural way of living turn Barcelona into a big centre of the electronic music scene with Sónar as the perfect example, an event that welcomes people from all over the world.

Q: Which exciting projects are coming soon?

A: I’m currently working on several projects. Firstly at my studio, making my sound grow up and looking forward to the releases. I’m also re-launching my own label BlueCube Records and I’m lucky enough to keep traveling as DJ around the world. Thanks!

3 QUESTIONS to BAAL:

Q: Both of you guys are called Matthias. So which Matthias is doing which part of BAAL?

A: Yes this leads to a lot of misunderstandings! Haha, but mostly one Matthias is taking care of all the technical stuff and the other more about the design of the sound itself.

Q: BAAL is hebrew for lord. Which lord (of music) are you guys following?

A: Basically most important is, that the lord gives us some emotion in the song. We shape a specific sound with BAAL for sure but we are very open to whom we pray. Also a lot of influences are good for inspiration. Sometimes we challenge ourselves in our productions with a sound we would never use ad hoc to see where it leads us to unseen hidden places of our music.

Q: Which fresh and hot BAAL projects are on the way?

A: We are currently working on a remix for Kid Simius and a new EP will be out (hopefully before) this summer!
