I am releasing it here now in an effort to encourage some deep thinking about the Choral Profession and our recent flourish of colleague cancellation. This particular episode looks back at the essay written by composer Daniel Elder as an attempt to protest his treatment by Choral Zeitgest.
In this line by line analysis of his essay I discuss the concepts outlined therein of “Critical Theory,” color blind auditions, and whether or not we have abandoned a “golden age” of diversity for something worse. Inspired by a conversation thread with @rasmansa and @ETVPod trying to drill down on a definition of "woke-ness" I think there are some issues at play here that both woke and anti-woke miss.
I prefer to find non-pejorative definitions of terms. A good faith attempt:
