In today's show I’m joined by Duncan Currie, country manager for the Australian (AUS) and New Zealand (NZ) regions for Marqeta and we’ll be talking about his journey in the card issuing space both on the Marqeta side and on the customer side.

Today my guest is Duncan Currie who has been working in Financial service and Fintech for a very long time.

Duncan has had a very deep career in this space, working at senior levels for companies like Visa, ANZ Bank, the NAB and Crypto.com to name a few. 

A massive depth of knowledge in the card space has led Duncan to his current role as Country Manager of Marqeta for the AUS and NZ regions. 

For the very few of you listening that might now know Marqeta, they are a massively successful Fintech company that focuses on modern card issuing platforms and infrastructure to help companies build and manage payment programs. They are valued at around $13bn, they have raised nearly $600m pre-IPO from the likes of Goldman Sachs and Mastercard and they have a team of over 700 humans and growing.

Duncan has also got some entrepreneurial DNA in him as he has founded and run a good few businesses too, some totally unrelated to Fintech.

Duncan is seriously experienced in financial services and Fintech and more importantly, a really nice guy.

In today's show I’m joined by Trent Bigelow, co-founder and CEO of Abound. We’ll be talking about his journey building a startup that aims to make independent workers more financially secure.

Trent is an impressive founder that is set on solving a real problem and one that he himself experienced.

He showed promise early on when he was an intern at HP. He proposed, organized, and led the HP Student Innovation Center - while he was still in high school.

He then went on to found his first startup which was the world's first online multi-account email client… although they started out thinking that they would be competing with Facebook and MySpace to build a better social network.

Trent then became the Business Development Director at Chiral Software. He also worked as a freelance UX researcher and then did some time as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Venrock.

This all led up to his current focus which is as the co-founder and CEO of Abound. Since 2017, Trent has led the team to help build the world that independent workers want to work in. They are doing this through a set of API’s that make it easy to embed benefits for independent workers in an easy and compliant way.

The Abound team is around 20 strong and growing. They have raised just under $7m in seed rounds, and are definitely a company to watch.

In today's show I'm joined by Elliott Donazzan, co-founder at Payble. 

Elliott is building an interesting FinTech in the payments space. We’ll be talking about the billions of dollars that late payments are costing Australian businesses every year and his journey so far in trying to solve this.

Elliott started his career at PWC and has gone on to found two startups one in the travel space and the other in the media space.

He then went on to become Strategy Director for the Zoo Group and then moved on to an Investment Manager position at Glenburn Private Capital.

After that Elliott joined Identitii Ltd, an ASX listed company, where he became the Director of Innovation and that was his last role before co-founding Payble which is his full focus today. 

Payble is a FinTech that offers a better way to get paid, improve cash flow collection, lower transaction costs and make failed or late payments a thing of the past.

Payable raised $1m earlier this year from CBA’s x15 ventures which is a great vote of confidence for the young startup.

In today's show I'm joined by Tauriq Keraan, CEO of TymeBank. We’ll be discussing his own journey (which is an inspirational one) as well as learning more about how TymeBank has seen such massive success and where it’s headed under his leadership.

To give you some context about TymeBank's success - TymeBank has acquired nearly 3 million customers in just over 2 years, and is adding between 3000 and 5000 customers every day. 

Tauriq Keraan (TK) is a very impressive human. After completing school TK went on to complete a BSC in Chemistry and an MSC in Materials Engineering.

He worked as the Technology Transfer Manager at the Tshwane University of Technology in the early days of his career. He then went on to hold various roles across various industries including a role as the Executive Lead of Strategy & Innovation at Deloitte.

In 2013 TK joined TymeBank and has held a range of leadership roles. In 2019 he was appointed as the CEO and that remains his focus today.

Tauriq is a rare leader and someone that I find deeply inspirational and humble. I actually met Tauriq through him reaching out to me on LinkedIn off the back of a post that I shared. We got on a call and I was blown away by his humility, openness to learning from anyone and general approach to life and business.

Stake's core markets are AUS and NZ, but they are now also in the UK and Brazil and growing fast. They raised $40m in May of this year and the team is about 80 people and growing. They have got 350 000 users on the platform and have close to a billion dollars under management. This is a company worth watching for sure and I'm excited to learn more...

In 2015 he became the managing director of the Melbourne office DDB, a full service advertising agency. In 2018, he joined OpenPay as Chief Revenue Officer and in July of this year he was appointed as CEO of Australia & New Zealand which is his current focus.

My initial impression of Dion was that he is a gun operator and also just a really open and nice guy.
