Publisher's Summary:
Jimmy Sullivan has been living on the road with his brother, Jack, and his band The Unknown Souls. Without a place to call home, Jimmy and Jack lead a nomadic life filled with music and anonymous cities. When they return to a place Jimmy never wants to see again - their old hometown of Palmetto Pointe, South Carolina - he falls in love with Charlotte Carrington.
With a soul now full of hope, Jimmy writes his first love song. When he performs it at a holiday concert to a standing ovation, the lyrics are dubbed the Perfect Love Song - so much so that Jimmy finds himself touring alongside famous country music stars. He's catapulted into a world where the trappings of fame and fortune reign supreme.
All too soon, the hope that had once inspired Jimmy to write such beautiful, genuine lyrics is overshadowed by what the song can do for him and his career. In his thirst for recognition, he agrees to miss his brothers wedding in Ireland to sing at a Christmas Eve concert. And his ties with Charlotte seem to be ever so quickly fading away.
Alone on Christmas Eve in New York City, Jimmy finally sees - with a little help from some Christmas miracles - that his material gains are nothing compared to love, that he is losing all that really matters. Is it too late to find his way to Ireland, to his brother, and to love?

I can't tell my heart what to do
Let me start this off by admitting this is not a book I would have picked out on my own. I'm not a chick-flick kind of girl. I don't do "sappy". Even married, I still hate Valentine's Day.
Nonetheless, I took a chance on this book after this author was so highly recommended by one of my friends. To say she loves this author would be an understatement. If someone is that enthralled with an author, it piques my interest. I promised her I'd read a book by her favorite author after seeing her enthusiasm multiple times in various Facebook posts. Even though it's July, I picked a Christmas story because it "spoke" to me.
Is it sappy? Kind of. Is it overly sappy? Nope. I could see the story and the relationships come to life, each detail vivid and real. I guess a benefit of having long distance relationships previously helped me understand the trials the characters were going through.
Life is real in this book. People are happy and depressed at the same time, with and for each other. They aren't perfect. They are stubborn and complicated. Life is complicated, making it hard to stay true to yourself at times, muchless your loved ones.
I'm so so glad I read this book. Patti Callahan Henry wrote an amazing story with feeling, complexity, reality. This was a joy to read.
I'll end with a quote from the book that spoke to me for whatever reason. This quote is why this book won't be deleted off my iPad, but will be moved to my favorites list without progress deleted.
"I can't tell my heart what to do.
I can't demand it stop hoping for you."
Loved the characters, Loved the book
I am not a usual reader of love stories. When in South Carolina I saw this autographed book on sale at a book store. It got me interested so I decided to add it to my Kindle. The story was told with great visual descriptions of all involved and the places it takes you. It made you feel you could see the places & characters. The story itself was heart warming.
