A great introduction to an overlooked era for all ages

This book offers a unique and delightful look at the Silurian and Devonian periods, suitable for school children but including some funny bits and cool facts that will help adults learn or recall the main events of this pivotal time in our planet's history. It also is the only book I've seen for kids that provides some information on my favorite predator, Dunkleosteus, incidentally playing it conservative and assigning a length of 6 meters where some books say 8 and a few old ones say 10. There are short, clear explanations of everything from the creation of soil to the adaptations needed for plants and animals to invade the dry land environment. Recommended to my by no less than paleontologists Matt Mossbrucker and Dr. Robert Bakker, this is just a terrific book: order one for your kid's library and another for yourself.Rumors of Existence

Nice introduction to multi-cellular life on primeval Earth.

This short book by National Geographic introduces the reader to the diverse forms of the original plant and animal life that originally appeared on Earth. The book starts with the Ordovician period, and ends with the Permian period before the dinosaurs appeared. The principal topics covered are the appearance of fishes, the rise of bony fishes, the greening of the Earth's surface, and the appearance on land of the first arthropods and tetrapods. The level and detail of text is appropriate for anyone above 6 years old. This book contains no photographs, only color illustrations and an occasional graph or timeline. The illustrations of the plants and animals are not overly detailed, and match the style and detail of the cover art. The book is interesting to read, and I myself enjoyed reading it as much as my children

Great intro to the those things next to the Dinosaurs at the museum...

Ever try to go to the natural history museum and get stumped on those things in the dioramas next to the t-rex? I do and I could barely pronounce their names correctly with my son... this is a great intro to that story - which is in some ways more interesting than dinosaurs. We like the information, the cute ideas... I wish the drawings were a bit better without the corny talking animals/species. But all in all, good book to have for the budding naturalist/paleontologist/scientist.

Charming, educational and delightful!

Keep my attention! Interesting read.

I must admit I personally know the author of this book and did download and read it just because of that fact. However, once I began reading it (and I am 53 years old!), I kept reading and reading and didn't want to put it down. It was a very interesting read and kept my attention from cover to cover. I could see any young person, both male and female, enjoying this mystery. After all, I enjoyed it and I'm old! :-)

Twilight Zone for Kids

Many young readers may not know much about âTwilight Zone,â an anthology series hosted by Rod Serling that ran for five seasons from 1959-1964. Episodes included psychological horror and thrillers, fantasy and science fiction. Usually an episode ended with a macabre twist.

Author Majanka Verstraete undoubtedly was influenced by Serlingâs TV show when she wrote The Doll Maker, a psychological thriller for pre-teens.

When Derek passes a new doll shop in town his sister Annie wants one of the dolls. Mother eventually gives into her demands and purchases the life-like toy named Tim, who resembles a three-year-old boy with âtiny eyebrows, a turned-up nose, and a mouth with miniscule teeth.â The doll freaks Derek to the core.

Derek tells his best friends about the doll after his first run-in with the Chucky-like wanna-be. The little monster even bites him.

Of course no one really believes the ten-year-old with an over active imagination until Derek takes friends Jamie and Martin to the doll shop and Martin falls under the influence of the doll makerâs spell.

Verstraete knows how to build tension in this 86-page middle-grade horror story. Readers will find themselves white-knuckled as they flip pages to the bookâs unexpected climax.

This reviewer rarely reads a book in one sitting, but The Doll Maker was an exception. However, there is a warning: If you want to sleep at night, donât read this book before bedtime.

Creepy even for adults!

When I started to read this book, geared for ages 6-10, I expected a cutesy supernatural/paranormal ghost story that would have no affect on me. Forget about age! Any story with creepy dolls that come alive is frightening! The story was very well written. It was an interesting story line that I think children will enjoy....even if they need to keep a night light on for a few days afterwards.

What disappointed you about Cinder Fella?

Went against my instincts and ordered a book read by the author. I collect cinderella stories and love alternative takes to the traditional storyline so I gave it a try.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kevin Scannell and Abigail Scannell s performances?

Not by Kevin Scannell. He doesn't have the right inflections. The story would have benefited from a skilled reader with an edited interpretation. Abigail was cute and poised but her voice was too young for the character

There is definitely a reason I avoid books read by the author. Unless it is Neil Gaiman it rarely ends well.

Disappointing entry in a great series!

Exposure is the most lacking entry in the so far stellar Virals series.

I guess every series is bound to have, or maybe even be entitled to have, a slightly weaker entry but it was still a little disappointing.

Exposure clearly sets up a really interesting conflict for Book 5 but it came at the expense of a polished book 4.

The mystery in Exposure just wasnt juicy enough. It felt like a scavenger hunt clues were collected, assembled and the mystery was all wrapped up in a neat little package promptly.

Ive come to expect far more from the Virals team but I hope this doesnt mean that characters have reached the point where theyre too smart for the writers to keep up with.

But if anyone can work a long-running forensic mystery series, it is Kathy Reichs.

Youd think a high-concept series about genius, well-connected, SUPER-POWERED teens would stretch credibility beyond breaking point at the best of time but Ive always found the series to be grounded by the day-to-day drama that complicates their clandestine sleuthing (and vice-versa).

In Exposure though, all the drama subplots were unceremoniously dumped and after they were bought to such a tantalising simmer in the previous book. This disappointing and added to the uneven and unsatisfying book.

Finally, I have to express a bit of concern about the new series co-writer, Kathys son Brendan. I praised book 3, the first shared novel, for staying true to voice but there was some clunkiness here. The pop-culture references came thick and fast, standing out like big neon thumbs by the end. Is this a sign the younger Reichs is taking more of the helm? I dont know but it needs to be dialled back before it becomes a problem.

Its always weird to review books deep into an ongoing series no one is going to pick up this one out of order to read no matter how glowing my review and no one who has read and loved the previous books are going to not continue no matter what I say.

To those who havent started Virals yet I say do it immediately. The series as a whole is excellent even is Exposure is wobble.

Likewise, to those who are perhaps on the fence about the last three, Exposure wont win you over but it should be read. It is essential to continue on in the series that I still have much love and high hopes for.

This would be better in paperback/hardcover where a child could write and respond to the various questions / tasks / suggestions.

If I could have seen some of the pages, I would not have purchased this book. It seems more like an activity book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The child read too slow - even though we sped it up - it then made the adult narrator read too fast.
