Three enjoyable quick detective stories

Clocking in at just under three hours, and containing three independent detective stories The Alexander Steele Mystery Trilogy is an enjoyable, quick, and fast paced collection.

I'm not sure if there are stories set before these ones or if we are just dropped into the middle of the story. The opening story has Steele already set up as a famous detective, with him just having defeated his "nemesis" (which to me sounded a little too Sherlock vs Moriarty. I don't think all detectives have nemeses.) and then being called on by The Vatican to find a missing relic. There is nothing in the three stories that really explains why The Vatican would go to Steele over another detective, it's just taken as fact that they have come to him.

The next two stories deal with some drug dealers and a drug war, and a small business being pressured by some thugs.

All are enjoyable stories to following along with, although they aren't the sort that you could solve yourself by working out all the clues (if that's what you are looking for).

The narrator is promising, although let down by some of the production work. He is well paced and easy to listen to. Certainly able to keep my attention. There is the occasional ambient noise, such as chair movements and squeaking, page changes or the occasional mouth noise. A little more care in removing these would have lifted the work a notch.

What made the experience of listening to Alexander Steele Mystery Trilogy the most enjoyable?

My favorite part of this book was the characters, who were all very distinct and well written. Also this was a collection of short stories, it was a good way to get a feel for the writing without delving into a large novel.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

These stories seemed to me to have come after some previous ones which I had not read, so sometimes the reasons for certain actions had no basis for me.

Which scene was your favorite?

The one where Steele grabs the spoon because it's essentially the answer to the whole mystery.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I read it in short hour long bursts - but I generally prefer to read books rather than listen to them.

I probably will go find the first of the Lawrence Steele books now to see if I like them better read than listened.

Enjoyable Adventure

Port of Refuge was an enjoyable story with a steady pace. I like how the Author incorporates the history of the Outer Banks into his tale and since I have visited that area some things were familiar to me which made it all the more interesting. Bob Johnson's narration brought the characters to life and I was able to distinguish between them easily which I like. I will definitely be purchasing more of both Author and Narrators work in the future. I was given a free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The Best

Another great following the first book. Loved the story and characters. While listening feel a part of the story. Ready for another one.

Another excellent story written by Garrett Dennis. He is great at character, plot, and storyline development. The story kept my interest the entire time with Ketch, Kari, and the gang.

Bob Johnson did a fantastic job with bringing the characters to life.

This book can be read on its own but I'd recommend reading The books in order.

Give it a go

I enjoyed this story and am glad I have it as an audio book, as I will be able to listen to it again and again. I really enjoyed the cast of characters that help the main character to solve the murder of his girlfriend's aunt, with a few good twists thrown in to make sure you are still listening. Will be looking out for the next book.

Naughty and Nice

Marla Madisonâs Tresspass is a gem . The bookâs location is Wauwatosa WI. Try saying that three times without your tongue tying in a neat knot! The book opens with a bang, literally, as Norman Teschlerâs house is blown sky-high with Norman in it. Private Investigator, TJ Peacock, is hired by Normanâs good friend, Gemma Rosenthal, to investigate Teschlerâs death. Gemma is not convinced by the quick and tidy ruling that her friendâs death was an unfortunate accident. A retired cop and now PI, Tj Peacock starts digging and uncovers some real dirt including a swingerâs club where neighboring couples exchange their spouses for nights of unbridled passion. The more she digs, the more TJ is mired in a salacious bog of sin and death.

Madison keeps the action moving and the reader guessing on who the murderer is. Thereâs an unsavory cast of characters and it could have been any one of them. She fooled me and Iâm not easy to dupe.

Madison knows her police procedures and that added real credence to the story. I liked this bookâa lot and can highly recommend it. Madison earned her 5 stars on this one.

I am only taking the time to review this so others won't be misled as I was. I enjoyed Ms. Madison's first book very much. Although this plot was good, there were a number of vulgar scenes that were much different than her last novel. I stopped reading after 100 pages and was very dissappointed.

Some Trespasses cannot be forgiven....

Trespass is the followup book to She's Not There by Marla Madison and is about TJ Peacock, a private investigator, and Lisa Rayburn, a therapist. I want to start by saying I did not read She's Not There first and I had no problem reading Trespass. Ms. Madison does a fine job of filling you in about the women's relationship and how they met, so you don't feel like you are missing anything. She's Not There and Trespass can both be stand alone novels, as the cases are not tied together in anyway beyond the characters.

Now for the good stuff, I LOVED this book! I am a huge reader of mystery suspense thriller genre and I have to say I haven't been reading a lot of it lately because I can't find what I'm looking for in the genre anymore. Depth. I want a mystery that I don't have figured out on the first page and I have to walk through the whole book to figure out just how the whole thing came together.

Humph!!!

Not a whole story merely an installment from a radio series. Beginning but no 'end'. Don't waste your money!

Poor value for money

Far too short. Story ended abruptly - seemed not to be the end. Very disappointing. Would definately NOT recommend this story.

Not the full story

Performances and story are fine but file is incomplete. Original broadcast ran to an hour and a half (as stated in the publishers summary above). CD version is 2 discs, Audible's version is obviously only disc 1. Reported this to customer support on release but seems that the problem has still not been resolved. Audible has fallen down badly here.

They had me going...

I read this with an unassuming mind. I accepted every aspects of the characters' personalities without question. And in the end, they blew me away. Even if I had allowed myself to suspect anyone, the main character was given an air of such innocence, that you dared not question her seemingly genuine nature. Good read...

Thought provoking.

A simple, powerful,pleasant and clever book. The author has used additional insights to bring joy,spirit of playfulness,to take risks and to be alive.Extremely picturesque and the choice of words is outstandingly good. " Nothing Lasts Forever" has given me many moments of joy.

sadly I could not get into this book - I would hope that other readers would give it their benefit of the doubt though - but for me it was just not one I could get into reading properly I only read about half the book before I could not read any further but it was one I downloaded for free

Perfect Noir..

For me, this was a unique premise, and I thought the author did a good job interweaving the individuals' stories while developing their characters. I found myself smiling at some of their insights and incisive commentary while trying to guess the killer's identity. (I didn't.)

The Corruptions overall is an entertaining read that kept me turning the pages. The ending had a nice twist.

Combines mystery, history, and action

I have vacationed in the beautiful Outer Banks, N.C. area and I got this book, which takes place there, to reconnect with it. I gave 5 stars for the story which is about finding sunken treasure and what happens to the characters that find it. Ketch and his family and friends seem to do a marvelous job of proving that money can't buy happiness. The author, Garrett Dennis, used to live there and brings a lot of the area's history to life, which I appreciated. And there is an otherworldly element that is both spooky and humorous. I got the audiobook version narrated by Ward Paxton, whose casual style fits the book nicely. I loved the voice he does for the fishing boat captain. There is an environmental message in the book, which I really liked because it gives hope that the area will remain unspoiled.

Am not much into listening to any book moire than once, but I could see me pulling it up at some future date and listening again because it was a captivating read.

Had trouble at first deciding the age of hero because he sounded much older than he actually was but I became more accustomed to his voice as I listened and got into the story. Everything else was good.

Prepare to pay the port fee!

The Port Fee was a fun story that puts me in the mood to take a trip to the coast and eat seafood and smell the briny air. After reading this story, out of order, unfortunately, I'm now interested in reading the first two stories that preceded it. Even out of order, I'm able to enjoy a story in any order I read it, or in this case, listen to it.

Past mystery, part history, the book doesn't take itself too seriously, which I liked, and it had fun with itself when some kids who found some dead bodies on the beach thought they were Zombies.

Huh?

That's what I kept thinking.. And eventually saying out loud to myself, as I continually was confused and completely lost by the storyline.

Add to that the fact that the narrator made no change in voice or inflection from character to character, I was left saying, 'huh?'

I am ever grateful to audible, for allowing me to return a book when I am so frustrated by it.

I'm sure should I read it in print, it would make more sense, but that's not the point here.
