Titel: Alles über Heather

Autor:: Matthew Weiner

Erzähler: Ulrich Matthes

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 3 hrs

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 11-13-17

Herausgeber: Random House Audio, Deutschland

Kategorien: Fiction, Literary

Zusammenfassung des Herausgebers:

Matthes liest Weiner - Ein Ereignis!

Members Reviews:

Dark Fantasy mixes with war, secrets, and love.

This book captivated me from the first chapter. Opening into mystery and suspense is a gripping way to introduce a story, and hooks me in every time. Quickly introduced to colorful characters and a diverse culture from my own, my imagination had plenty to feast on.

Stories about war, especially dark fantasies, are a guilty pleasure of mine. When they are well written, with a pace that flows like butter, I can't get enough. The Ivory Staff definitely qualifies on all accounts, and quickly became a favorite read for 2017. I immediately wanted to know more about the mysterious war, the missing parents, the orphaned boy, and the strong, passionate girl who didn't tolerate being pitied. As the story progressed, I was pulled further into this fantasy, caught up in the dark politics, corruption, and enormous chances taken in love.

Samiyah and Chad's story is mainly told after the fact, to the teenager Maliko by his uncle Pan (the king), and his chief male servant and friend, Saab. Experiencing the stories told to Maliko as he hears them for the first time was a creative way to explain the past, and answer the questions both Maliko and the reader itch to have answered. Filled with clashes of classes, a lottery of a ball for Chad to pick a bride, and rebellious passion, the overall story is captivating. Even though the place is made up, it's easy to imagine it exists, as it pulls you into it's fantasy.

While I'm sure the written version is very good, I had the pleasure of experiencing the audiobook. The narrator did a wonderful job with the characters, and seemed to fit the story very well. His voice pulled me into Mutarobi, giving the story wonderful layers of depth. Considering the story is nearly thirteen hours, I'd say he is definitely a talented narrator, as every minute was captivating.

This is definitely a book to add to your reading list, written or audiobook format. I'm sure it won't disappoint. I would definitely look out for more works by this author, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to escape into this story for a few days.

*I was given a complimentary audiobook edition of this book, from the author, to listen to in exchange for an honest review.

Needs a bit of polishing

It took me a bit to get into this story, partly due to the narration (discussed below). Everything starts off so full of sunshine, kids laughing, family camaraderie, etc. and I was expecting a dark fantasy novel. Now, the story does take a walk on the darkside for much of the book but it takes a little while to get there. Maliko is on the cusp of manhood and has many questions about his parentage. His Uncle Pan and a chief leader, Saab, take us back a generation as they relate the tale of Malikos mom, Samiya (AKA Siya).

The world building was the most interesting part of this book.

Kritik Bewertungen:

So leicht und beschwingt erzählt, so wohltuend warmherzig, dass man sich fragt, warum es eigentlich nicht häufiger solche wunderbaren kleinen Bücher gibt.

Publisher's Summary:

When Sonia, the prominent wife of a local cemetery owner, is killed in the worst accident anyone can remember, Hartley Nolan, a lifelong teetotaler, is hardly the person that police expect to find behind the wheel. After all, Hartley is something of an inspiration in a town that hasn't seen much luck in decades - he's the local boy who made it big in Chicago without ever forgetting his struggling family back home. But Tower Hill, Illinois, is a close-knit community that's alive with old rivalries, making it fertile ground for resentments. With Hartley up for parole four years after his arrest, an old friend of Sonia's decides to take justice into his own hands. Set in the days leading up to Sonia's death and those surrounding Hartley's release from prison, Baird Harper's linked stories brilliantly unravel the mystery behind the town's most notorious crime and examine how far its residents will go to rectify it.

Title: Frankenstein: The Missing Chapter

Author: Kristine Goodfellow

Narrator: Jordan Harling

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 41 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-04-17

Publisher: Bird-in-Hand Books

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Fiction, Literary

Publisher's Summary:

Frankenstein's creation was not a lumbering, simple-minded giant. Hollywood created that familiar monster. In Mary Shelley's audiobook, the creature is intelligent and agile. He is not mute, but articulate and eloquent. In the span of one chapter of the classic novel, the creature changes from good to evil. Imagine what life would be like for this man. Pieced together with dead bodies, he's given life, only to be scorned and abandoned by his creator, and reviled and feared by everyone. What changed a gentle giant into a monster? The Missing Chapter gives him a chance to tell his story - an incredible tale of passion, desire, and regret.

Members Reviews:

A wonderful story!

The Missing Chapter is a beautiful story of love and suffering that truly touched my heart. Ms. Goodfellow does an amazing job of taking Mary Shelley's monster and giving him heart that just wants to belong and be loved. From the moment I began the first chapter to the last word, I was drawn into the world of the characters; their every thought and emotion became part of me.

I highly recommend this book. Ms. Goodfellow is an incredible writer. You can tell she puts a lot of thought and feelings into creating her characters. The world needs more writers like Ms. Goodfellow!

Another great book from Kristine Goodfellow!

I just finished reading the Missing Chapter and I loved it! I have to admit... I have never read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein... It just didn't seem like the kind of book that I would like. But Goodfellow did such a great job setting up this story that I felt like I wasn't missing a thing. This book does a wonderful job making you feel connected to the characters. After reading it... I sympathize with the "monster", I can picture him, I feel like I know him. I actually want to go read "Frankenstein" now to see what happens next. Thank you Kristine for another book that just makes you want to keep reading it and not put it down!

A Review

I loved this book!! I haven't read Frankenstein since high school, but was not lost at all during my reading. I like the explanation Ms. Goodfellow came up with as a reason why the monster went from being gentle to the monster that everybody is familiar with. It makes it much easier to sympathize with the monster. I look forward to rereading this book in the future!!

I LOVED IT!!

I just finished reading Kristine's "The Missing Chapter-A Story of Love" and I LOVED every minute of it! She paints the "monster" in a light that creates sympathy and interest in the character. Her story of how he came to be who Mary Shelley created is believable and at times enchanting. I am so glad that I read this book and highly recommend it for others. I can't wait to read Kristine's next novel!

Loved it!

The author's style is simple yet sophisticated and entertaining. The poems sprinkled throughout were wonderful, the plot was intriguing, the characters believable and relatable. I did not want to stop reading until the last page and was sad that it was over.
