Title: Jewel Sea

Author: Kim Kelly

Narrator: Helen Morse

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 25 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-27-16

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

The whole of the harbour was touched with gold - the tops of the quiet waves, warehouse roofs, the bulging folds of sails at rest, the tips of seagull wings - giving him one sweeping glimpse of beauty just as he was leaving, a vision of things as they ought always to be just as they were not....

March, 1912. A sultry Indian summer hangs over the west coast of Australia and aboard the luxury steamship SS Koombana, three tales entwine. Irene Everley longs to leave her first-class fishbowl existence, secretly penning a gossip column as her life spirals out of control into soulless liaisons and alcohol, the long shadow of a tragedy clouding her view. James Sinclair, an investor on his way to Broome is not the man he says he is but can he be trusted?

Abraham Davis, a wealthy dealer whose scandalous divorce is being dragged through the press, prepares to take the gamble of his life: to purchase an infamous, stolen pearl along the journey north.Perfectly round, perfectly pink, this pearl comes with a curse and with a warning - destroying all who keep it from returning to the sea.

Members Reviews:

worth reading. different but very good.

A very interesting way of storytelling as told by the three subjects in the book. I really did enjoy it as it was so different from the everyday novels.

Enchanting, intense and dazzling!

Miya first came to life in Broome when the Aboriginal boy Warlitj was diving for shells; back on board the vessel the cracking open of each shell mostly revealed nothing, but the trawlerâs master noticed Warlitjâs hesitation and was astounded when he saw the beauty and lustre of the round, pink pearl. And so began Miyaâs journey to be returned to the seaâ

March 1912 the coastal steamer SS Koombana was leaving on its journey from Fremantle and up the West Coast of Australia. On board the large number of passengers included Irene Everley, travelling with her best friend Marg; Abraham Davis, wealthy pearl dealer and trawler owner; and James Sinclair, investor from Sydney. All three people had dark secrets â their lives would also entwine in the short journey at sea.

How would the curse of a lustrous pearl brought to life some seven years prior touch the lives of Irene, Abraham and James?

Jewel Sea by Aussie author Kim Kelly is based on factual events surrounding the SS Koombana â the authorâs notes at the end of the book show a fascinating insight into Kellyâs reasons for Jewel Sea and how it came about. A story filled with mystery and intrigue; a little magic and a well-written narrative â Kim Kellyâs latest book is enchanting, intense and dazzling! A definite keeper! I wonder what this author will come up with next! Highly recommended.

Beautiful

It's the second decennium of the twentieth century and on board of the steamship SS Koombana there are several people with big secrets. Irene likes to write so much that she does it professionally and she loves the company of men. She's hiding both of these things from most of the people in her life. When she meets James at the ship he immediately catches her attention. However, is James who he says he is and what is he doing on the luxury ship?

A large pearl is being found and those on board who find out about its existence want to have it. Just one boy knows about its curse. The pearl can do a lot of damage, it wants to destroy, especially those who can't hear its call.

Title: The Cleanskin

Author: Laura Bloom

Narrator: Rajendra Moodley

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 40 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-17-16

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

I needed someone I could trust. Someone others would trust. Someone with no criminal record. With no previous involvement. A cleanskin. Someone to come over, do the job, and go home....

Some days, even Halley can't find the person she once was. She's changed her name and no one - least of all her husband and son - knows of her past. No one except Aidan, who turns up one day in her small Australian town and shatters the façade she's built so carefully.

Aidan is on a mission. But why is he still taking orders from his brother in an English jail - at the cost of his own happiness? When Aidan forces Halley to face what she's done, what they discover not only changes their understanding of what happened back then, it changes everything now.

Laura Bloom deftly goes to the dark heart of The Troubles to explore the lingering damage wrought by sectarian conflict on communities, families and individuals. Based on real events, The Cleanskin is a story of intense human relationships with a cast of flawed and entirely believable characters.

Members Reviews:

My book of the year - a brilliant read

Iâm lucky enough to have already read The Cleanskin and itâs my book of the year. I canât recommend it highly enough. Itâs one of the most accomplished and moving novels about Australia that I have read. It speaks the truth about what trauma can do to people, down through the generations. Itâs a book about how the past affects us and lives through us, and what consequences really mean and look like in someoneâs life and someoneâs family. It tackles the impact of sectarianism in Ireland and the UK, and how that has affected us here in Australia. How that conflict is deeply ingrained in our countryâs roots and in many of our own ancestries.

It is a big book, and an important book, but itâs also a very human, funny and deeply moving book.

Halley is one of the most subtle, well-written and wonderful female protagonists I have ever had the pleasure of reading a novel about. I find some female protagonists too warm and perfect and prim â completely unrealistic and way too heartwarming. I donât want to receive a pep-talk, I want to read a really good novel. Flawed, intelligent, heroic, passionate, real Ââ Halley is a true original.

One of Laura Bloomâs many strengths is that she is able to write about both women and men, and from both points of view, with great skill, subtlety and reach. Like in her last novel, In The Mood, her male characters are just as rich, multi-faceted and human as the women characters she creates. Aidan provides a truly memorable and moving counterpoint to Halley throughout the novel.

I thoroughly recommend The Cleanskin â itâs destined to be an Australian classic.

compelling Australian crime

Halley has moved to the quiet country town of Mullumbimby to forget her past and start a new life. She now has a loving husband and a teenage son, who know nothing of her previous life. But in the back of her mind is always the worry that her past will catch up with her because she knows âthey will never let you goâ.

Cleanskin contains a complex mix of characters that will have your emotions whirling. I loved them, disliked them, worried about them, couldnât quite understand them and then perfectly understood where they were coming from. Each character was complex, flawed, real but they were never in your face.

L'autrice dell'anno.

Maddison, però, è solo all'apparenza una donna in carriera. Title: The Girl Green as Elderflower

Author: Randolph Stow

Narrator: Humphrey Bower

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 17 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-12-16

Publisher: Bolinda Publishing

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

He thought of his dream, of how he had looked up out of his hole, his pit, his wolf-pit, and seen the foreign leaves, which had formed themselves into a face....

Laid low by a tropical disease and an accompanying malaise, Crispin Clare returns to his ancestral home in East Anglia. Local folklore seeps into his fever dreams and into his writing, and the lines between reality and myth soon start to blur.

In this finely woven tale of illness and recovery, family and fable, Randolph Stow creates a unique, imaginative landscape, populated by figures from old English myths and legends, and from Clares present.

Critic Reviews:

"His novels and poetry embody a uniquely rich and strange account of the land and people of Australia that we can ill afford to lose." (Australian Book Review)

"It is a rare pleasure for those of us who are already fans to have these works at our disposal...[Stow was] the most talented and celebrated Australian author of the post-White generation." (The Monthly)

Green Children Mystery

All I expected and glad I could find this tale.related to the Green Children of Woolpit. Good old-fashioned writing in all his tales.

Titre: Le lièvre de Vatanen

Auteur: Arto Paasilinna

Narrateur: Jérémy Lopez

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 4 hrs and 52 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 09-09-16

Éditeur: Gallimard

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
