    Title: Anita and Me
    Author: Meera Syal
    Narrator: Meera Syal
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Nine-year-old Meena can't wait to grow up and break free from her parents. But as the daughter of the only Punjabi family in the mining village of Tollington, her struggle for independence is different from most.
Meena wants fish fingers and chips, not chapati and dhal; she wants an English Christmas, not the usual interminable Punjabi festivities. But more than anything, she wants to roam the backyards of working-class Tollington with feisty Anita Rutter and her gang.
Blonde, cool, aloof, outrageous and sassy, Anita is everything Meena thinks she wants to be. Meena wheedles her way into Anita's life, but the arrival of a baby brother, teenage hormones, impending entrance exams for the posh grammar school and a motorcycling rebel without a future threaten to turn Anita's salad days sour.
Anita and Me paints a comic, poignant, compassionate and colourful portrait of village life in the era of flares, power cuts, glam rock, decimalisation and Ted Heath. It is a unique vision of a British childhood in the'70s, a childhood caught between two cultures, each on the brink of change.
    Critic Reviews:
"Tom Sawyer meets Cider with Rosie en route to India via Wolverhampton. A wonderful book - treat yourself." (Ben Elton)
"Funny, moving and packed full of wonderful surprises." (Esther Freud)
"This is a funny, sad book. It made me long to be a kid again, yet grateful I'd grown up." (Jo Brand)
"Anita and Me is full of pleasure. Syal is as skilful at rendering the saucy, ballsy backchat of the Tollington women as she is at describing Meena's 'uncles and aunties', her parents' Indian friends. The book is expertly structured and engagingly written, illuminated throughout by Meena's ironical irreverance and robustness of spirit. I can give it no higher recommendation." (Laura Tennant, Guardian)

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Was true to 60s , not only in the UK but in NZ. It certainly bought back memories of my childhood in NZ

An interesting story from the perspective of an Indian girl growing up in Britain. It is amusing as well as telling.
    Sweet
Many of us who have grown outside of India, may have experienced somewhat similar situations and reactions. This book must have been very personal to the person writing it, and we can smell whiffs of her childhood in some way. Overall, it was fair reading, though, at the end of it, I felt it did not affect me in any major way. Sweet but not fantastic.
    Funny and Addictive Voice
Anita and Me by Meera Syal is actually one of those books where I found out it existed by seeing the film adaptation first. I am sometimes a little weary of reading books after I've already seen the film because film adaptations tend to alter somewhat from the novels themselves and I enjoyed the film thoroughly and didn't want to end up being disappointed with it once I had finished the book.
It has actually been sat on my bookshelf for about three years, never seemingly managing to get around to it; there always seemed to be books I wanted to read more.

As May tries to navigate college life and fulfill her music dreams, Conner pulls her toward the natural world, toward her own wildness, and, ultimately, toward the wildness within her music as well.

This book had an unusual writing style that made for slow reading. I liked the character development and the way it was woven into the themes of the book, but I couldn't finish the it because it was so sad.
    A very good read!!!!
It's a refreshing tale of young love written so descriptively you can picture this happening in every day real life. Beautifully written by a great author in the making. Highly recommend this book.

Listen is a tale about a girl named May who thinks she knows everything about her life, but her confidence slips away as she enters college and begins to see things differently. Listen asks the question about what is really important in life. Varela uses her poetic and almost lyrical writing style to share May's journey and to show us that true beauty is not something that we have to see to believe.
    Beautiful, coming-of-age novel.
This beautiful, coming-of-age novel captivated me. Main characters May and Conner are two very different young musicians who become unlikely, but supportive companions as they try to understand their paths in life. They struggle like most young adults but find wisdom in music and nature. The evocative writing carried me along to an unexpected, yet satisfying, ending.

A little book about the friendship between Jenna, the actress trying to adjust to life as a widow, Natalie, who chose a career instead of marriage and Liz, wife/mother/grandmother/volunteer/former cabaret singer. They think their lives are settled; they don't expect any drastic changes but they are in for some surprises. Travel, Internet dating, family problems, new friends, computer classes, a career change, a romance, and more give them a lot of things to discuss and plan at their weekly luncheons. They find that they can adapt to and even welcome and enjoy the life changes in spite of or because of their age; they are (shush, don't tell) over 70!

    Loved this.
I loved this story and read most of it at one sitting. The writing flowed and kept my interest. Loved the three characters and loved the ending. It was a feel- good story. It was great to read something so positive and something that shows that there really is an Act 2 , if you want there to be. For someone like me, in their early 60's, it was great to see these women blossom and enjoy their lives so much. I loved all three women , but Jenna was my favorite . I also loved the friendship that the women shared. It was interesting, also, to see these women dealing with technology and how they used it to change their lives. This book is a great read for anyone who wants to read a well written and warm and fuzzy story about the positive things that can happen later in life, if you let them.
    just too delightful for
I really enjoyed this book. I did a lot of smiling, some out loud laughing and even shed a tear. What more could you ask for from a book. I recommend this book to all who are ,light of heart on their own second act.
    Sounds Familiar
I enjoyed the book. It struck a chord with me and I could relate to the character of Jenna, as I was also widowed. The three woman were all very likable and very realistic.

Review of Act Two for Three
This is a fun book. A quick read that captures the lives of so many women who are older like myself, but still want to enjoy life!
    Act Two for Three
The story about three friends sounded real to me. Lots of chuckles and great dialog. This is a book that can be relished by both men and women.

    Publisher's Summary:
The university town of Ithaca, New York, blessed with numerous waterfalls and beautiful, dangerous gorges, provides a cosmopolitan yet bucolic backdrop for this tale of transformation. Here Stephen and Michelle Wolcott live an ostensibly idyllic albeit wintry life, comfortably oblivious of the constant interplay between the subtle and material worlds. Gathered for a Christmas party at their well-ordered home, old friends and a new neighbor are treated to the appearance of a fox in the snowy yard. For some it is magical, for others innocuous; for all it proves significant. Following the party Michelle's old trouble with migraines returns, bringing frightening sensations, confusion, and the recurring vision of a body in the water. With the aid of a shaman, she approaches a new understanding of the nature of existence, learns to open her heart, and finds that spiritual forces are conspiring to take her life in a new direction.

Way too wordy and drags on forever
Way too wordy and drags on forever, I had to put it down.
    review of an unusual book
Skirting The Gorge takes place in the bucolic university town of Ithaca NY. The book is aptly named, not only because the area is well known for its magnificent gorges, but because many of the characters seem to be dangerously close to falling into their own metaphorical abyss.
The main character, Michelle, is the wife of a university professor. One could say that it is a story about a woman who wants a baby, but that would be too superficial.
The author explores the complex relationship between the woman and her husband and friends. He delves into anthropomorphism and mysticism when we learn, in the first chapter, that the individual telling the story is a fox.
Later we meet enigmatic Sam, a massage therapist who ventures into alternative treatments and eastern religions. Sam counsels Michelle when she has trouble dealing with her feelings, and helps her to make connections between her relationships, her body, mind, and soul. When this shamanistic character disappears, we are left wondering about the circumstances.
This book may not appeal to everyone, but it surprised me, and I think those who enjoy probing the metaphysical will find it very enjoyable.
