Warning to animal lovers: Dog fight

Very disturbing dog fight initiated by main character, I had to stop listening to the book.

Publisher's Summary:

Since the death of her parents in a car accident, Vanessa's relationship with her grandmother splintered into a cantankerous silence. Along with her two kids - Maeve, a spunky 10-year-old, and Brodie, an inquisitive 7-year-old - Vanessa visits her Grammy Francis to interview her about the family history. Inside a secret passage in her 140-year-old home, Maeve and Brodie discover an old ship captain's box, and inside they find a handwritten manuscript bound with a deerskin map.

As the children read the manuscript with their mother and great-grandmother, they are taken back to 1848. There they meet their great-great-great-grandmother Claire, who, while riding her horse in the forest outside of Boston, has a chance meeting with Daniel Benet, who she slaps because she can. Both are mysteriously awestruck by one another. Five months later, with their meeting in the forest still silently lingering on their hearts, a twist of fate finds the two heading to San Francisco on the SS California with Daniel's new friend and business partner Philippe and Claire's new husband Ashley.

In their journeys, they meet Chang Hui, a Chinese doctor and Moon Bear, a young Maidu shaman and together they face emotional and physical challenges that contour and define them as individuals and friends. Together, they weave the tapestry of Claire's adventure for Maeve, Brodie, and their mother Vanessa, who must confront their own yearnings for family, acceptance, and the fate of the mysterious hidden family secret of the ship captain's box that will change them forever.

Title: What Became of You, My Love?

Author: Maeve Haran

Narrator: Julia Franklin

Format: Unabridged

Length: 11 hrs and 45 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-01-16

Publisher: Isis Publishing Ltd

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Stella Ainsworth has settled for suburban peace with a pedantic husband, a dissatisfied daughter and a clutch of beloved grandchildren - who all take her presence in their lives for granted. Then Cameron Keene, her boyfriend from her teenage years who'd left for America to become a rock icon of the '60s, returns to England.

Much to Stella's astonishment, Cameron announces in an interview that his most famous song, which became a legendary love anthem across the world, was written about Stella and that he has come back to find her.

Members Reviews:

You don't have to be young to have fun!

Any additional comments?

How pleasant to have a heroine near one's own age, not a pert 20 +. Stella has grown used to her reasonable life with a husband who has settled for dullness and her self-centred daughter, who is married to a workaholic husband. Her main interests lie with her grandchildren and the regeneration programme for the centre of the suburban town where she and her long-time best friend have lived most of their lives. However this somewhat boring situation is given a thorough shake-up with the unexpected arrival, back in town, of her boyfriend from the '60s who had become a rock'n'roll star, along with his entourage of manager, roadies and several ex-wives, intent on making a come-back tour. In a relatively short period of time the lives of all of these people will be changed, and life will never be quite the same again.

Riepilogo Editore:

Publisher's Summary:

Tommy Belanger had been born into a dysfunctional family - fed by alcohol abuse, abject poverty, and the trials and tribulations associated with living in isolation. His was a life filled with child abuse, incest, bestiality, and zoophilia. Tommy hated how those things affected him and his siblings. And he detested his father.

He watched his brothers and sisters leave the farm, one by one, and knew that their lives would not be far different from the ones that they had left behind. He knew that he, too, would leave one day and wondered how far the apple could fall from the proverbial tree.

"A journey of discovery and redemption." (Belfast Telegraph)

"A convincing and moving novel interlaced with wonderful descriptions of the Montana countryside." (Daily Mail)

"The Divide is genuinely affecting." (Sunday Times)

Members Reviews:

Great book

I have always liked Nicholas Evans books but haven't read one for a while. This was up to his usual high standard and I will re visit his previous novels having enjoyed The Divide so much. His ability to span the lows and depths of human emotion is brilliant. It is a shame he hasn't written more novels.
