How to Drink Bourbon, Tequila and Other Spirits with the Drink Neat Guys episodes

  • 10: Disney’s Cave of Wonders

I’m not talking about the one in Aladdin. I am speaking of La Cava del Tequila at Epcot in the Mexico Pavilion. Boasting a menu of over 200 tequilas, top-shelf cocktails and Mexican wine and beer, it is a not-to-be-missed stop for us Drink Neat Guys (except Timmy. Timmy hates tequila). Continuing our Walt Disney World episodes, Matt and Ben take flight in tequila heaven with Volcan blanco, Casa Noble Reserva de La Cava reposado and Ocho Reserva de La Cava anjeo. (We’re assuming the Reserval de La Cava means that it was hand picked by the fine folks at La Cava. If not, let us know.)

We have to say, some of the brands we found on the menu are not available in our area, but you can rest assured we will be on the lookout for Volcan, El Tesoro and the like. The Volcan was suprisingly smooth for a blanco.

  • 8: Good Ol’ Fashioned Mess

In this episode, the guys look to mix some Bulleit Rye and Bulleit Bourbon in to the classic Old Fashioned cocktail. Of course, true to form we taste it before we put it in our drink and discover something interesting once it’s mixed. We used a basic recipe:

    “Palatable” Old Fashioned Cocktail

    * 2 Oz Whiskey* 2-3 Dashes Bitters * 1 Sugar Cube* 1 tsp. Water* Orange Peel* Ice* Add sugar cube, bitters and water and crush the sugar cube and muddle the mixture until most of the sugar is dissolved.  Add whiskey, ice and stir for 30 seconds.  Zest the orange peel into the drink and rim the glass.  Use the peel for garnish.

  • Episode 7: When Pigs Fly

On our second installment from the Polite Pig at Disney Springs, we decided to take flight- specifically the Florida Flight featuring Timber Creek Florida Single Malt Whiskey, St. Augustine Florida Straight Bourbon and Palm Ridge Reserve.

This isn’t the end of the WDW episodes, but next time, we get back in the studio with Timmy and some Bulleit products. Let us know your thoughts, questions and topic ideas. • Episode 6: This Little Piggy Went to Market

    Disney needs a bourbon bar.
    (Whisper)
    Really?
    (Whisper)
    Right around the corner, seriously?
    (Whisper)
    You’re joking!
Welcome to the second installment of our WDW trip.

I used to know about as much as a non-insider could know about Walt Disney World but I’ve been away a few years and things have changed. Disney is always a great place for food and drink but the whiskey choices at any given restaurant are random. Our hotel bar for example had Makers, Forester 86 and Jim Black Label. All respectable. Occasionally you’d see some Knob Creek or Bulleit behind the bar in some of the parks, but I was absolutely blown away by the selection at Disney Springs, primarily at The Polite Pig. Come to find out that Disney has it’s own bourbon trail at Disney Springs.

In the first part of our recording, Ben and Matt sample some Henry McKenna 10Year Bottled-in-Bond (which should be priced around $35 if you can find it).

  • Episode 5: Whistlepig in Paradise

Matt and Ben are on location at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. There are certain brands and bottles here that you just can find at home, wherever home may be, and we wanted to capture some of the magic. In this short episode, we try Tom Sims 6 Year Old Bourbon and some Whistlepig 10 Year Old Rye.

We hope you enjoy the episode. The next few episodes will be short and sweet as we explore WDW and some of the libations available. Leave us a comment, review or drop us a line. We want to hear what you think . Thanks for listening.

  • Episode 4: Tequila 101

Welcome to the basics of blue agave. In this episode, the guys discuss the similarity and differences found in tequila and how important maturity, just as most things, becomes in a tequila. Grab a bottle and taste for yourself; there is fruit, pepper and other flavors in every sip. Compare the same brand’s blanco and reposado and taste what a few months inside a barrel can do. Most importantly, if you shoot, mix or drink it neat, taste it first; it may surprise you. Take notes.

    * Blanco- essentially tequila moonshine straight out of the still* Reposado-“rested” 2-11 months* Anjeo- “aged” at least 1-year old

If you’re looking for an inexpensive but good tequila, Hornito Reposado is an excellent choice on the lower end of the price range. We also like Costco’s Kirkland Anjeo as an inexpensive sipper.

  • Episode 3: God Bless the Hipsters and the Two Things They Got Right.

In today’s episode, we discuss age statements; their disappearance and reemergence. The question is whether or not age statements matter or is it just a gimmick to drive up prices?

Guys, thanks for listening. This is just a fun project for us. Even though we appreciate “premium” bottles of bourbon and tequila, we also recognize there are numerous great bottles on the shelves every day. Let us encourage you to try Evan Williams 1783, Makers 46, or Old Forester 100 proof. Let us know about your thoughts.
