    Love and compassion wins
I waited on this book and counted down the days. It took me longer to read than it normally would but I have a busy toddler.
This book was very well written, I truly feel like I know each person, they were explained very well, even down to the places you visited. You could visualize the whole book, which made some parts an uh oh!
I honestly keep thinking how cruel and mean Liz was and how rude Rob was and how on earth could you possibly be so heartless, but the end explains it.. We can't change how someone feels, but both your hearts felt love and compassion and you fought through just like Delaney did. You were the bigger person! Those 4, well there is a reason they are not parents:) I'm honored to watch Delaney grow through pictures. Thank you for sharing this amazing love story!!! Great book!!!!
It is a wonderful book and you quickly get to know the people ...
This was delivered yesterday and I read it in one sitting. It is a wonderful book and you quickly get to know the people in it, along with their thoughts and hopes. My husband and I adopted three special needs kids and I totally understand everything that goes through your head and your heart while preparing to bring home a child who is different. Our kids are the greatest blessing we can imagine and I can tell Delaney is that too. So glad she is in the family she was meant to be with. Thanks for sharing your amazing story.
One truly amazing story about following your heart .....
Could not wait to start this book and after having it in my hands after just one hour I began and could not put it down .... !! You can not walk away from reading this book without having a fuller heart. I am in total awe over how this sweet little girl was allowed to be welcomed into such a beautiful family as the Ott-Dahl family. Everyone should be able to feel the love sweet little Delaney has brought to this world. Believe me ... This book is well worth every second you put into it !!!
Story That Will Touch Your Heart
What an amazing story!! It doesn't matter if you are straight or gay, with or without kids, know someone with or without disabilities. This is a story that will touch your heart! We are all faced with tough decisions we have to make in life. Andrea and Keston had to make a decision that changed their life forever with love and selflessness. Delaney is an amazing and lucky little girl!! A story that everyone can relate to one way or another. Well written and one you can't put down!!
AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING! A Must READ!
What an amazing story of what true love can accomplish. Very well written.

  • Will & I Audiobook by Clay Byars

    Title: Will & I
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Clay Byars
    Narrator: Paul Woodson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-21-16
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
What would you have left if you awoke and were told you would be paralyzed from the eyes down for the rest of your life? After an almost fatal car crash and a botched surgery to repair nerve damage, that was Clay Byars' reality at 18 years old. Determination became the only constant in his life from that point on, and miraculously he quickly began to defy the odds.
Clay discovered a life far different from that of his identical twin brother, Will. As Clay's life changed in an unimaginable way, Will's continued as a typical college freshman with the world at his feet, providing not only a foil to Clay's inability to live a normal life but a sense of familiarity and connection to himself.
As Will went on to graduate, marry, and start a family, Clay carved out a unique existence, doing the seemingly impossible by living on his own on a remote farm in Alabama. With haunting clarity, in an eloquent yet unsentimental retelling, Clay shares the unlikely story of his life and his coping mechanisms, including weekly singing lessons that do more than teach him to use his voice again - they remind him of his will to exist.
In Will & I, the most striking parts of the story are not the details of a tragedy but the piercing insights that decorate Clay's sparse, honest way of seeing the world and his bravely challenging himself and his abilities at every turn.

    Real life, not cliches
I read this in one sitting. I can't stop thinking about it.
Byars' writing style is so unique for a memoir. Flowery prose and tear-jerking moments are replaced with raw and real words that draw you into the story not as a cheerleader, but as a participant. You won't find platitudes or cliches. What you will find is reality. The detachment Byars seems to have might throw some readers, but it likely will draw most readers even further into his story. I too felt locked-in, or as much as I could without actually being that way.
The interactions between Clay and his twin, Will, feel real, not contrived or made-for-TV. His sister and parents provide a stable and supportive background to the unbelievable story as it unfolds.
The main reason I find this book so thought-provoking is not the conclusion. It is the unapologetic way in which Byars presents it. The non-linear style he employs makes you see his life and struggles as moments out of time, much like I assume he remembers, or better yet, lives his story.
    Well done and real!
    An unflinchingly honest memoir
Clay Byars book brings the best of a good memoir: nuggets of universal truth wrapped in an unflinchingly honest package. It is altogether appropriate that the eloquence of the material ("It was the season of brochure pictures"; "I feel like a human sculpture he's working on") is framed in the unexpected location of a voice lesson studio since his book is a hymn of recovery, and redemption. Put in on your short list of summer reading.
    Terrific
Remarkable story. Unsentimental but deeply moving memoir; strongly recommend.
    Outstanding
Incredible true story of survival against long odds. In a few pages, "Will & I" will change the way you view yourself and the world. Highly recommended!

    Publisher's Summary:
No one is remembered quite like General Patton for their strength, ferocious determination, skill, severity, and leadership. With a near lifetime in the military with unmatchable experience, Patton not only showed strict discipline and did what was asked of him, he exceeded all expectations and went above and beyond the call of duty. He lived to fight, teach, and succeed. Such gusto solidified Patton's place as one of the greatest and most successful figures in military history. Outspoken, strict, harsh, and highly opinionated, it is no wonder why Patton's voice cannot be silenced even decades after his death. He was a man who demanded attention and cooperation.

Anxiety for Beginners will serve as a guide for those who live with anxiety disorders and those who live with them by proxy. Combining her own experiences (rendered in emotive detail) with extensive research with experts (neurologists, psychiatrists, geneticists and fellow sufferers - many of them very familiar faces), Morgan will discover the way in which people can live lives that are not just manageable but enjoyable by learning to accept anxiety rather than spending their lives fighting and being ashamed of it.

    Insightful book
Feeling down as Im listening to this book gives me light at the end of the tunnel. Looking at the causes of anxiety which are so vast from parental influences to illness, childhood experiences and brain chemistry. I had awareness when she spoke about a lady who hated planes as I do to and she said it was more social anxiety which unblocked something which happened to me in my childhood. I liked how honest the author was and how she got her partner to write down her experience of her when she was unwell and how she felt etc I feel its s good read for friends and family to so they can learn to understand anxiety.
    Personal and full of insight
If you could sum up Anxiety for Beginners in three words, what would they be?
This is truly a good introduction to the insights of anxiety, from a person with wit, personal experience and professional insight.
What did you like best about this story?
The mixture between anecdotes and scholarship and personal temper made Anxiety a pleasure.
    A bit too wishy washy
Would you try another book written by Eleanor Morgan or narrated by Eleanor Morgan?
Yes I probably would, the narration is fairly good
Would you ever listen to anything by Eleanor Morgan again?
Yes I probably would, the narration is fairly good
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The book was a bit self indulgent and didn't have too much actionable, solid information about anxiety.
Was Anxiety for Beginners worth the listening time?
    Overall not really.
    Any additional comments?
This is more of a story of Eleanors life and experience with anxiety. It is good to see that perspective but if you are hoping for some insights into living with or dealing with anxiety then they are few and fair between.
It is more of a comfort blanket seeing someone else experiencing the same things, but actually that doesn't help anyone in the long term.
Eleanors opinions and conclusions can be summed up as:
    - Take anxiety seriously, seek help
    - Everyone responds to treatments (drugs, CBT, mindfulness meditation etc.) differently. Find what works for you
Apart from that you can glean some little tips and snippets of information (in my case, some insights into what OCD really is and how it manifests) but there is not much it in terms of practical information.
At times the writing feels self indulgent and unnecessary.
Overall, this is a book written more for Eleanor than the reader.
    Confusing
The books starts off ok. But the author has suffered. Really suffered. Yet she seems to find it ok to inflict this suffering on others. She talks freely about he animal research that has been undertaken.

    Title: Pen & Palate
Subtitle: Mastering the Art of Adulthood, with Recipes
    Author: Lucy Madison, Tram Nguyen
    Narrator: Lucy Madison, Tram Nguyen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-31-16
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the writers of acclaimed blog Pen & Palate, a humorous coming-of-age (and mastering-the-art-of-home-cooking) memoir of friendship, told through stories, recipes, and beautiful illustrations.
Getting through life in your 20s isn't easy - especially if you're broke, awkward, and prone to starting small grease fires in your studio apartment. For best friends Lucy Madison and Tram Nguyen, cooking was an escape from the daily humiliation that is being a 20-something woman in a big city. Pen & Palate traces the course of Lucy and Tram's devoted friendship through miserable jobs and tiny apartments, first loves and ill-advised flings, successes and setbacks - always with a shared love of food at the center of the narrative. A modern take on Laurie Colwin's classic Home Cooking, this coming-of-age memoir for the Girls set weaves together comical (mis)adventures and recipes meant to be shared with a best friend and a bottle of wine.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio.
    Critic Reviews:
"Pen & Palate lets you tag along on the fun, sad, and sometimes kind of embarrassing journey of two young women stumbling into their own identities, while holding fast to one another. Weaving in the hallmark recipes of each chapter in their lives, Lucy and Tram have made a cozy and satisfying meal out of their stories - the kind that makes you want to sit at the table and chat all night long." (Kelsey Miller, author of Big Girl)
"Pen & Palate is a modern tale of friendship and food. Lucy and Tram learn many of life's tough lessons: first, cold SpaghettiOs are not better than your mom's homemade caramel and coconut braised pork, and second, you can't hide from your true self (and it just so happens, your true self is actually pretty great)." (Amelia Morris, author of Bon Appétempt)
"I have rarely devoured a book as quickly and as joyfully as Pen & Palate. I paused in my reading only to snack - the book made me so happy, and so hungry. Besides being a brilliantly conceived, beautifully illustrated, funny and delicious book, Pen & Palate is also the story of a real, deep, and wonderful friendship." (Emily Gould, author of Friendship and And the Heart Says Whatever)
    Members Reviews:
Thank you! What a great read!
I'm a sucker for food memoirs, and this one was pretty great with beautiful illustrations! I couldn't put it down and read it in 3 days.
I might be bias, because I know Tram. Tram and I met back in 2009 - when we worked together in the crazy costume studio in Chicago. During our downtime together, we would always take turns storytelling, and she always had the best stories. This book is filled with tons of my favorites stories Tram have shared with me and more; about Lucy, Romeo, her childhood, and being in the kitchen. I don't live in Chicago anymore, but this book brought me back, invoking plenty of food for thought..remind me that it's okay to be living in my 20s scared and uncertain.
I highly recommend it. Witty, sweet, honest, enlightening, & personal. Love the way Lucy and Tram weave their stories together.

    Date de publication: 05-26-16
    Éditeur: Sixtrid
    Evaluation: 5 sur 5 sur 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
