Length: 7 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-07-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The thing to remember about this story is that every word is true. If I never told it to a soul, and this book did not exist, it would not cease to be true. I don't mind at all if you forget this. The important thing is that I don't.
On a hot, still morning on a beautiful beach in Jamaica, Decca Aitkenhead's life changed forever. Her four-year-old boy was paddling peacefully at the water's edge when a wave pulled him out to sea. Her partner, Tony, swam out and saved their son's life - then drowned before her eyes.
When Decca and Tony first had met a decade earlier, they'd become the most improbable couple in London. She was an award-winning Guardian journalist, famous for interviewing leading politicians. He was a dreadlocked criminal with a history of drug dealing and violence. No one thought the romance would last, but it did. Until the tide swept Tony away, plunging Decca into the dark chasm of random tragedy.
Exploring race and redemption, privilege and prejudice, All at Sea is a remarkable story of love and loss, of how one couple changed each other's lives and of what a sudden death can do to the people who survive.
    Critic Reviews:
"A story of absolute heartbreak, but also a story of unbelievable courage." (Davina McCall)
"An entrancing love story; a horrifying death story; a book about class, family, growing up, taking risks and learning how to be strong. This is a memoir like no other. Read it once, and it will be inside your head forever." (Andrew Marr)
"If you buy just one book this year, make it this one. I have never read anything like it and wished it would never end." (Jennifer Saunders)
"A brave book about emotional truth. It brought a tear to my eye, and will be deeply empowering for those who read it." (Tanya Byron)
"A sad, sad story of a remarkable relationship, beautifully told. Huge universal themes such as love, loss and grief are conveyed in intimate detail and with searing honesty. Anyone who has loved, lost or grieved - that's all of us - should read it." (Alastair Campbell)
"A beautiful and painful guidebook through the taboo subject of death. Decca made me miss someone I've never met and, for today at least, savour those I love." (Russell Brand)
"A remarkable story of sudden tragedy and grief, of love and resilience." (Arianna Huffington)
"All at Sea grabs you from the first three lines and masterfully pulls you into an ocean of startling and redemptive grief. A surprising love story, searingly honest, a book of family, loss, death and ultimately life. A triumphant tour de force." (Eve Ensler)
"Unbearably moving and almost brutally compelling." (Adrian Chiles)

    Surprisingly bad
I so wanted to love this book, when I first saw it in a bookshop in my town I pored over it and resolved to read it as it sounded a very moving tale. Then when I saw it on audible I decided to listen instead.
The true story is incredibly sad and I feel so uncharitable for not having enjoyed this book but I really didn't. I found the narrator - who is also the author - to have a very grating voice with a lot of emphasis on words that didn't seem to need stress on them, and as a result I was soon fairly fed up.

    Don't buy
This book is not very well-written and contains grammatical errors. Although I am sure the author loves her child, she spends most of the book quoting scripture. If it's a compelling story of international adoption you're after, read China Ghosts,The Waiting Child, or The Lost Daughters of China.
    Poorly Written
This very short book is very well-meaning, but was not edited properly and is very poorly written. Further, if you are a devout Christian, you might enjoy it because the author frequently quotes Christian scripture.

Even though landing humans on the moon in the late 1960s and early 1970s took place in a highly scientific, technological arena, it was interesting to witness episodes of mundane human behavior from time to time proving you can place man in an exotic, futuristic environment, but you can't always expect exotic, futuristic behavior from him. These episodes were personal down-to-earth experiences - some funny, some sad, some even bizarre - during this momentous era of US history.

What really happened at the Chappaquiddick Bridge was hidden under a fog of deception for over four decades, until the advent of voice stress technology shined the light of truth on Ted Kennedy's statements to the police.
Part two of this audiobook tells about the chance meeting with the CIA and how this voice stress technology played an important role in defeating a terrorist group called Shinning Path in Lima, Peru.
Part three is about the power of the subconscious and how voice stress technology led me to learn how to communicate with my own subconscious mind.

    Title: The Inner War
Subtitle: A German WWII Survivors Journey from Pain to Peace
    Author: Gerda Hartwich Robinson
    Narrator: Susannah Tyrrell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-28-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
It is sometimes difficult to remember that in war there are innocents on all sides who suffer. German citizens who had no connection to the atrocities committed by their countrymen nonetheless endured great hardships because of them.
In The Inner War, author Gerda Hartwich Robinson narrates her story as a German survivor of World War II. She tells how her life's journey included hunger, fear, neglect, and physical and emotional abuse and how she carried these injustices in her mind and body for many years, leading to debilitating back pain, headaches, panic attacks, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. In this touching memoir, Robinson shows that the tragedies of war don't end when the last bomb is dropped or the last prisoner freed; they continue in subtle but devastating ways.
Like many German citizens during and after the war, Robinson was simply trying to survive a terrifying situation she had nothing to do with. She describes how her spirit was devastated by hopelessness and how she entertained thoughts of suicide. The Inner War shares lessons she learned at a chronic pain rehabilitation center that allowed her to start on a path to peace and love.

Gerda fled a difficult and painful childhood in World War II Germany
Moving to America in her early 20s, Gerda fled a difficult and painful childhood in World War II Germany. Her courageous choices led to her transformation--evidence that we are not at the mercy of our parents' shortcomings but at God's mercy. Barbara Bennett Schroeder
A tough and tender account of war and transcendence
I had the pleasure of meeting Gerda Robinson and working with her in the early stages of the book. I am very pleased with the final product because it doesn't shy away from the horror and heartache of the war, but it also sounds a note of triumph as Gerda works through and transcends the deep pain that her childhood experiences and memories have left. I was touched at how vivid and beautiful some of the her memories are, and how the story makes a point of emphasizing gratitude, even in the depths of misfortune and despair. The book will be worthwhile reading for anyone who wants a firsthand look at the trauma of war through the eyes of a child, and later, a young woman seeking to begin a new life. It will also be an inspiration to anyone who has struggled with debilitating pain, fear, and physical illness resulting from deeply buried trauma. Gerda's story shows that there is light at the end of that tunnel, and finding it is worth the innumerable challenges one encounters in the search.
Another story of someone overcoming an abusive childhood
This book states it is "a true and intimate picture of a child's life changed by war." Unfortunately, this assessment didn't ring true for me. Yes, the author was a small child in Germany during WWII, but the vast majority of the traumas she writes about had little to do with war: an emotionally abusive father, a mother who, while physically present, had shirked much of the responsibility of caring for her children and who later died young, and a rape. While I'm not downplaying that these factors led to a sad and unhappy childhood for the author, the war had little to do with them.

All they ask for is kindness, compassion, and a regular meal. In return, they will be with you through the trials of life, your best friend, always loyal, and always has your back when the road gets rough.

Awesome performance and writing, special effects.
What made the experience of listening to Dog Tales: 12 True Dog Stories of Loyalty, Heroism and Devotion, Volume 1 the most enjoyable?
Such a variety, if you are a dog lover, this will describe, as closely as is possible, how it feels to be a dog owner. And if you are not a dog owner, you will want to be after hearing these stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dog Tales: 12 True Dog Stories of Loyalty, Heroism and Devotion, Volume 1?
When they lost their german shepherd in the woods, brought back memories, of my sled dog's, running off and then being so relieved when we found them again.
What does Patricia Mary Hoeksema bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Such passion and understanding, since she is a very popular dog behaviorial trainer, with years of experience working with dogs, she knew just how to bring these stories alive. And the variety of character's and dialect's, show's that she is a gifted voice actress!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several parts that made me cry, and several that made me laugh.
    Any additional comments?
These stories brought back memories of all the dog's I've owned through the year's. So well written and told, the special effect, are right on, they were such a treat. This was not a wham, bam, thank you Madame, reading. You can tell that much time and care and thought went into this production.

I thank God Almighty, the creator of heaven and Earth that I am not alone. I always looked up and said "Father forgive me, I am holding on to you".
This book is written in English, my second language. I am not afraid of how bad my English may be. It's time for me to move on and accomplish what I started. I want to let you, the listener, know that you are important to me. That is why I want to introduce you to my book and to let you know how God provided me with all I needed, and that was help and one more chance. Every good thing that's happening to me now is not by my own power, but by God's. The only person I am very close to now is Jesus because he makes my dreams come true. He never lets me fail, he is always by my side, not because I am a widow or afraid, but because he is my Savior, he loves me, and I am his child. I hope you all enjoy listening to my book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

    Great story
I recently read this book and I could say I was deeply moved with the events that took place. Throughout reading the book, the struggles and challenges her family and Abeny went through for a better life was tremendous. She proved to be such a strong, hard working woman and didn't give up even when her husband passed. She knew a life with greater opportunities for her family and herself were a reach away. Abeny did what she had to do to get to the U.S. and found the courage to share her story with any and everyone who is ready to read about it. I certainly recommend this book!
Tears of a Mother Review by Cathy Parrott
This is a story of survival in an impossible situation. It makes us realize that we are all much stronger than we can imagine. Abeny's voice in her book captures the sadness of the situation in the Suden, but also reflects how her positive outlook enabled her to not only survive, but save her children. The book get's stronger each chapter. It is easy to read so could appeal to all different age levels. It's powerful message stays with the reader long after the book has been read. It will make you look at your life in a new way. It is a subtle reminder that we need to keep our eyes open and not ignore the suffering in our world.
A Great Story of a Refugee's Devotion to her Children
This true story of a strong Sudanese mother and widow is excellent. The author has first hand knowledge of the long civil war in Sudan as well as great insight into the suffering of many thousands of Southern Sudanese living in the path of the regime's army. Her tale makes history come alive and teaches us much about how religious faith and the will to survive can overcome the horrors of awful war.
Amazing story of triumph over adversity
This is a fabulous story of a human spirit and the lengths one women went through to save her family and offer them a more promising future. Tragedy, adversity and triumph. Through it all her faith pulled her through. A must read for anyone facing adversity. A tremendous insight into the Sundanese culture. Thank you for sharing your story with us Abeny.
    Living faith
I have admired and respected Abeny since I first came to know her at our church. I knew a smattering of her story. Reading her book made the story come alive, and my respect for her has deepened as she shares her living faith in our God throughout the journey she has lived. Her story is also the story of a people.
