Publisher's Summary:
Reporter Rex Tracey has just recovered from his affair with Lithuanian artist Milda Majauskas when she disappears. Hes got other concerns, not least an anti-immigration group spreading hate across his beloved Tottenham and a string of attacks on young women at the local beauty spot, Alexandra Palace.
But when Rex himself becomes a suspect, he is forced to seek answers amongst the teahouses and tower blocks of this little-glimpsed, ever-changing quarter of London.
Critic Reviews:
"With an appealing protagonist, a cast of vivid characters and a powerful sense of place, this is an excellent crime novel as well as a sharply observed slice of contemporary London life - and the good news is that it promises to be the first in a series." (Guardian)
"M. H. Baylis introduces the London borough of Tottenham to crime fiction, and it performs extremely well...fast-moving, committed and very entertaining." (The Times)
"A sparky, unexpected thriller...His delicate sense of place gives Baylis a special authenticity, which - when you add neat characterisation and plotting - make him a crime writer to watch." (Daily Mail)
"A richly enjoyable novel, working as both a satisfyingly plotted crime thriller, and a love letter to an often-overlooked corner of London." (Independent)

Death at the Palace
this was the worst book I have ever tried to read. I still have not finished it. Usually , I read a book in a day. Not this one . Very boring.
No Dearth in 'A Death at the Palace' by M.H. Baylis
'A Death at the Palace' is an elegant luxuriantly-written Whodunit, skillfully crafted with a discreet plot, set across several decades, that leaves you guessing the murderer almost to the end. Then there's a big surprise to boot.
It's packed with an array of quirky characters linked by a delightfully mournful journalist hero, Rex Tracey, and steeped in a sense of place so strong you can smell the world of down-at-heel north London heaving off every page.
Throughout the story, M.H. Baylis employs his unique and brilliant observational flair to capture a stream of humorous snapshots of people and their oddities.
In every way a modern novel, 'A Death at the Palace' thankfully eschews the disjointed gimmicks that are the dispiriting trademarks of so many writers today.
This is a colourful and engrossing page-turner. It's ready-made for a movie and, with luck, should attract the attention of a diligent film company.
A Death at the Palace
A Death at the Palace
This is not a formula mystery. Instead, this has an interesting plot with a superb sense of place bringing both the scruffy north London neighbourhood, with its patches of gentility, and the immigrant experience there, to life. Rex Tracey, the middle-aged journalist, who is the main character, does share some character traits with both Wallender and Rebus, though he is somewhat less misanthropic . Secondary characters are well described and the plot unfolds with enough twists to keep the reader's interest throughout. I'll look for more books by this author.

Fresh and Engaging
A sharp crime novel that moves beyond its genre and captures a slice of north London in a way that feels personal and true. A thoroughly engaging read!
