Publisher's Summary:
A lawyer agrees to defend an ex-baseball prospect accused of murder.
In 1964, 19-year-old Billy Dupaul was on his way to stardom. A modest farm boy with a lightning fastball, he had just signed a record contract with the New York Mets when a single gunshot changed his life forever. Dupaul went down on an attempted murder rap, and the Mets washed their hands of him. Eight years later, the man he was said to have shot drops dead when a shard of bullet works its way into his brain. After eight summers in Attica, Billy is about to be tried for murder.
After throwing him to the wolves in 1964, the vice president of the Mets shows surprising interest in the case and hires Hank Ross, one of the toughest defense attorneys in Manhattan, to save the boy from the chair. It's an impossible assignment, and Ross will find the case has more bite than any big-league curve.

A Really, Really, Really Good Book
I have just recently discovered Robert L. Fish. This is about a one-time bonus
baby for the New York Mets, Billy Dupaul. He,s only 19 when he's signed up and
receives a big bonus and decides to go out and celebrate in NYC. He is just
fresh from a small town and knows nothing of city life and proceeds to go to a
bar and get drunk and meets a beautiful girl who entices him to her apartment.
Her husband breaks in on them and the final result is Billy lands in prison
for shooting the husband. After he has served his term, the husband(he hadnt
killed him) gets a blood infection and dies and the DA decides he is going to
get Billy back in prison. to me t his is a curious situation. I hadnt realized
if you served a term for s hooting someone than years later they die, you can
actually go back to prison. It seems the first time Billy had very weak
representation but this time the Mets hire attorney Hank Ross to represent
Billy. Hank "smells a rat".Something just isnt right about the whole thing and
he intends to get to the bottom of it. He,s having to stand up to a possibly
crooked DA but Hank can take anything anyone dishes out. A very worthwhile
read. I have been trying to find out if Fish wrote other books with Hank Ross
at the fore.
Excellent
