I haven't but I will do now.

I felt I was there with the passengers and could feel the emotion as the story unfolded depending on the character we were focussing on.

It's one of the best books I've ever listened to. I loved hearing the different accents of the passengers and being able to identify with them all. I could envisage being on the ship and on shore. It was such a wonderful book, well written and well narrated and I highly recommend it.

i regtet that i did not read the synopsis, else i would not have purchased this book which had a very. feminine bias..

Very well written, very well read

I bought this book because it was on audible's daily deal and was a change to my usual listen.

The characters are well developed and the plot cleverly woven. The ending is also something of a treat. Heartily recommend.

A gift to youth, and to us all

Brushstrokes in Time comes as a significant gift from Sylvia Vetta. Although those of us old enough to remember tumultuous times in China approach her topic with apprehension, she relates those times gently. Her protagonist Little Winter gives life to the Cultural Revolution, the Democracy Wall, and Tiananmen Square--yet the honesty comes with a restraint that works well to initiate youth to those times.

More valuable, since fewer of us remember this, she describes the Stars movement--artists daring to defy oppression with new, more international styles to display new ideas of democracy. And by demonstrating the human spirit rising above all restraints and threats, Vetta makes this book relevant to all of us. In any time, for each of us, the need for loyalty to ideals, for honoring each human stands essential.

Excellent book!

Life of an artist in Mao Tse-tung's era

This is the fascinating story of Xiadong (English = Little Winter) who grew up in China in Chairman Mao Zedong / Tse-tung's era, when expressing individual thoughts could result in imprisonment and death.

Although Little Winter is a fictional character, I soon forgot this as I read about her life in those unpredictable times. The book starts when Little Winter is a teenager in 1962 and continues up to 2011 by which time she has moved to the USA. Her story includes the terrible events in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and other atrocities, but also tells of love, adventure and happy times.

Little Winter is an artist, and through her tale the reader is given an insight into the immense bravery of the Stars Arts Movement (a real group of artists) as they try to gain back the right of freedom of expression, and stand up to the authorities so that their art can be experienced by all.

This is a mother's (Little Winter) story written for her teenage daughter - who is growing up in the very different world of the USA. Little Winter's story tells of love, fear, excitement and horror, and though this is a "faction" book, it is difficult to believe that Little Winter, and her friends, are not real people. There is a useful list at the back of the book giving brief details of the political figures mentioned in the book, plus 10 of the real Stars.

I have rated it a 4 out of 5 as I would have liked a little more factual information about what was going on politically at the time. However this a very strong and moving story, which is full of interesting details.

Die vollkommene Grazie sei also nur von einer Marionette oder einem Gott zu erreichen.

Gentle heartwarming story

Just finished listening to this lovely novel and thoroughly enjoyed both the story and the narration. I did find the tale a little 'chocolate boxy' in that it seemed like the perfect village, even the mine owner was a good guy who treated his workers well, the police didn't prosecute for murder unnecessarily and everything worked out well in the end for all concerned.

I'm always a little wary when life is so well organised but goodness knows we all need a bit of sunshine in our lives from time to time and it's great to finish a book with a smile on your face. Well worth a credit particularly if you have an interest in the history of social medicine in Britain.

A compelling and quick read very picturesque and evocative with rich dialogue. Brings the court of Charles II to life Too me seven days The story of Frances Stuart, who returns from poverty stricken exile in France to the court of Charles II in restoration England. Frances Stuart was such a great beauty that Following the war with the Dutch, Charles had a commemorative medal cast, in which her face was used as a model for Britannia; this subsequently became customary for medals, coins and statues. She continued to appear on some of the copper coinage of the United Kingdom until the decimalization of the currency in 1971

Charles II, used to getting his own way with women becomes infatuated with Frances who resists his advances who is herself in love with the king's cousin Charles Stuart Duke of Richmond and Lennox,

Her great friend and mentor Mall Villiers stands by her side and the totally malignant and vindictive Lady Barbara Castlemaine will stop at nothing to try and destroy Frances, as Castlemaine is insanely jealous of the king's affections for Frances.

I enjoyed this book.

The Lady Who Didn't Become Charles II's Mistress

Frances Stuart spent most of her young life in exile at the court of the dowager Queen Henrietta Maria. When Charles II is restored to his throne, Frances is sent home to England to become Lady in Waiting to the new Queen, Catherine of Braganza. At sixteen, Frances innocence and beauty are highly-prized amongst the decadent Restoration Court, but when King Charles falls passionately in love with her, she discovers to refuse a king leaves her open to suspicion as well as ridicule for false modesty and those by others and a target for nefarious seduction plans by those with ambition to win favour with the king.

Frances is also inconveniently in love with Charles, Duke of Richmond, and when he wife dies in childbirth, harbours the tiny hope that he might turn to her to be his next duchess. However Frances is penniless and with the eye of the king on her, no man dare pay court to Mistress Stuart, and The Duke of Richmond looks elsewhere for his next wife.

Set against the drama of the Great Plague and the Fire of London, The Painted Lady is a wonderfully colourful portrait of 17th century court life with some well known names given new life by Ms Haran. I especially loved the passion of Barbara Castlemaine as the King's long-term mistress.
