The Most Creative Book I've Heard in Ages
What made the experience of listening to Congo! the most enjoyable?
I could sit back and feel like I was there. It took me back to childhood at first, riding my bike with my friends. Then, I felt the freedom of living in Monte Carlo. Then, the raw excitement and courage I would have to muster to survive in the jungle. I listened in just two sittings because I couldn't stop.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Congo!?
Without giving anything away, I loved her time with the tribe in the jungle and the ending.
Which character as performed by Erica L. Risberg was your favorite?
It has to be Whitney, although I loved Ben, the bad guy, too.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cried when the baby was kidnapped from her and I laughed at her trying to figure out boys. I cried a few other times, too, like when she kept getting uprooted.
    Any additional comments?
This book reads better than a typical book made for middle grades because it doesn't talk down to anyone. I forgot I was listening to a book for kids, other than some of the narrator's interpretations. But, it doesn't have anything a parent wouldn't want a 10 year old to hear. It teaches about dfferent countries and family and responsibility but is so exciting you can't stop to eat or sleep.

    Members Reviews:
    Great, easy read
Just finished reading this and Beneath Quentaris and didn't have a problem with reading them in the wrong chronological order. The characters of Tal (street-smart urchin come musician)and Nisha (tavern helper come fire magician) are likeable. It reads like a condensed version of most adult fantasy novels and I never felt burdened with long complex character/plot developments. From the first page, the characters and the adventure just "gets on with it". It's got elves, magicians, elementals, rifts into other worlds. A great entree read for "tweens" who may then go on to break their teeth on adult fantasy fiction.
I've only just started on Quentaris Chronicles - so to other reviewers, please feel free to correct me:
    1. Quentaris is a magical city and nearby are rift caves that lead to other worlds.
    2. One Quentaris, many authors
    3. At least 11 titles in the Quentaris Chronicles series
    4. Each author create their own book/characters that revolve around Quentaris.
    5. Tal and Nisha, who feature in this book are found in Quentaris in Flames (2003), Beneath Quentaris (2003) and Stars of Quentaris (2006)

    Title: Button Down
    Author: Anne Ylvisaker
    Narrator: Sanjiv Jhaveri
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-12
    Publisher: Candlewick on Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Ever since local boy Lester Ward got drafted by the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and football fever hit Goodhue, Iowa, scrawny Ned Button can think of nothing but the game. Sure, Lesters younger bully of a brother is determined to keep Ned and his gang from ever getting near a real pickup game. But Ned has a few tricks up his sleeve: he can catch and sometimes even throw, much to his surprise. And hes got his eccentric grandpa Ike, who has less get-up-and-go these days, but no shortage of down-home wisdom to pass along. Like that being a football star is less about being big and more about strategy and playing as part of a team. And that having friends and family in your corner is a bigger prize than a lucky football will ever be.
From the acclaimed author of The Luck of the Buttons comes another story about a sometimes hapless, always winning family that scores big points for humor and heart.

    Fun read!
Button Down is the second book in Anne Ylvisaker's series of the Button family. It is a great read for the whole family. The first book Luck of the Buttons got us hooked with a cute tomboy named Tugs. This book is about her cousin who wants to play football. My kids loved the book and we are waiting for the third book to come out. I would recommend them for anyone especially those who may not like to read. They are exciting and not difficult to read either. They are considered a historical fiction with some great settings for the era.

    Grampa Likes it
Button Down is a children's book. I'm not a child, but am a grampa of children; They'll like the story, and I do too.
The story is about eleven-year-old Ned Button, of Goodhue, Iowa. Ned wants three things: to win a football game against some bigger boys, to attend a University of Iowa football game, and to have his own football. "Granddaddy Ike" mentors him, helps two of Ned's three desires come to him, and figures in a twist at the end. A normal child will give the book five stars, as do I. David Carlyle, "Another Land."

    Publisher's Summary:
Danny has only one dream - football, but he's useless at it. Danny, though, has allies - his teacher Miss Gilby and Chris, who adopted him as a challenge and who is the school's football hero. This story tells of their deepening friendship.
    Members Reviews:
    Goal! Goal!
Danny is just a little slower than the other kids. He is big and awkward and can't always understand what's going on, but he does know he loves to play football and that he wants to make a goal! Chris would just like to get on with being the captain of his team and ignore Danny, but he just can't--the kid really has determination...Even when the other students make fun of him, Danny keeps trying and Chris is always ready to defend him. In an exciting climax everybody sees some unexpected action out of Danny--now affectionately known as "Dazzer" and this fast-moving story comes to an exciting end. McGann does a great job of voice inflection from one character to the next. The Aussi accent and sometimes strange words don't even matter because this reading is so clear and vivid. This is a great little story that leaves you with a smile.

    Members Reviews:
    Cute middle grade mystery
This was a cute little juvenile/middle grade mystery, I think if you are a fan of Nancy Drew or Flavia or even Harriet the Spy youll enjoy this one. Meg and her sisters set out to solve a mystery happening at the Hotel her parents run. I loved when the bad guys turned the tables on the girls and they got in trouble with their parents and she blamed her mom for reading Sherlock Holmes to her when she was younger! I also enjoyed that she followed advice from Sherlock Holmes to figure out what was happening.
These sisters were young and Arielle DeLisle did a good job of sounding very young, her narration fit the book very well and I look forward to listening to an adult book narrated by her.
All in all a cute book a solid middle grade mystery that I think will have appeal to boys and girls alike and hope that this is the start of a series I think could go far.

    Wacky with a serious undertone
I really, really enjoyed this book, when I first got it when I was about 10, and still when I'm 19.
Basically, what it all comes down to is, "what would you do if your next door neighbors turned out to be aliens?"
The series also continues... great reading!
