Wild Boy a Wild Adventure

Grade 6-8 Twelve-year-old Jesse flees his frontier community home to live in the mountains after he strikes his father with an axe handle during an argument. Initially, Jesse struggles as he faces life in the wild and as he tries to conceal himself from others. Gradually, with assistance from a patient mountain man, Larry, Jesse learns to hunt, to skin and cure animal pelts, and to build a cabin. He also learns about Billings, a dangerous mountain man determined to drive Jesse off the mountain. As Jesse begins winning the battles with his environment, and even hunts and kills a bear with Larry, he also begins to conquer his inner turmoil, brought about by thoughts of his mother, who abandoned the family several years earlier. As lost memories return, Jesse realizes why she left and is able to gain control of his temper. His inner wild boy then becomes tamed as he reconciles with his father and decides to go home.

Collier provides vivid details about frontier and mountain life while he describes the brutality of living in the wilderness. The author's use of dialogue and inner-monologue help develop Jesse's character. However, Collier's twangy, first-person dialect makes it occasionally difficult to wade through the book. But the danger Jesse confronts and action that takes place will keep readers interested in the "wild boy" and his battles with the mountain and himself.

My son could not put this e-book down! Great adventure read. Here is his review: "This is a review on the book Avery McShane. It is a mystery and I would recommend it to older boys. It is about three boys in an oil camp called Campo Metta which means that his dad works for the oil company. The boy's names are Avery, Billy, and Todd. They formed a club called the Machas. Every week they come up with a mission. One day Todd came up with the idea that they steal some bananas from Pablo Molo. So they tried to steal some bananas but Pablo saw them. Avery and Billy got out safely but Todd got shot with rock salt. It was Fourth of July so they got some fireworks. When they got there they heard Pablo and the customs agent talking. They heard that they were smugglers and were smuggling something out but not what. To find out what happens next you will have to read the book yourself."

What a fun adventure!

My 12 year old son couldn't put this book down! From the first paragraph he was drawn in by the three friends with their tree house and all the fun they had together. Of course their fun leads them into some danger and a mystery they have to figure out.

We sure hope there will be more Avery McShane books coming out soon.

My son loved this adventure tale of Avery and his friends. Such a refreshing change from the typical stories being written today. No vampires or aliens in sight! Just your normal boys adventure story. He got so caught up in the story that he even wanted to know if we could move to Venuzuela. How cool is that! He is so hoping there will be a next book, so hopefully this will encourage the writer, Greg Lyons, to get cracking.

Moms of 10 year old boys, here is a book your son can really enjoy, is age appropriate, and will encourage your son to want to read. My son was, for the first time, easy to persuade to go to bed, so that he could read and find out what happened next.

three buddies, a no-girls-allowed treehouse, slingshots, comic books and a faithful dog. you may think you've read this one before, but it wasn't likely set by the orinoco river in venezuela, and probably didn't have this level of action, intensity and ingenuity. a fun read, especially for third culture kids.

This book is great, I would recommend it to anyone with children or grandchildren. Fun for them as well as yourself. A really enjoyable read, kept me intrigued. It would have to be one of the best children's books I have ever read. Excellent writing.

A "Fair Dinkum" Children's Book

This is an amazingly creative children's book, and it would really appeal to both boys and girls, especially in the 8-12 years age range. They will be able to put themselves into the situations of the story and appreciate the humour.The author has captured the sibling dynamics of four children really well. Parents will read this with a knowing smile.

Once I started reading, I could not put it down again until the book was finished. It made me laugh and cry. I felt like I was really there, living right along with the characters. Great writing!
