A cute kids story!

If you could sum up The Ice Dragon in three words, what would they be?

Cute Children's Fairytale

Who was your favorite character and why?

George! He is quite adventurous & sure they can be back before anyone is the wiser. Kids always know it all. He made me smile & think back to being a kids too!

What does Karen Krause bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Karen Krause tell s a story in a way to make children sit down and believe the story being told.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but I do believe the kids will love this tale, especially at the holidays!

Any additional comments?

Good job to both the author & the narrator! It is refreshing to hear a new story for kids over hearing one we have heard for the last 20 years!

Great book for kids!!

This is a fun adorable read for kids. I fondly recall reading these in much younger days and this was a happy revisit.

The story is a simple fantasy with plenty of fun elements. It is enchanting from beginning to end. I read this with my 6 year old niece, and she was enthralled! These are such lovely stories with rich characters and creative situations.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Karen Krause, who is delightful. She has a nice steady pace that moves with the story. I love her accent, it is like having your own British nanny to read to you! She was inventive and fun with the character voices. I imagine she would we just as wonderful in person at a children's story hour! I delight for my ears!

Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thought, opinions and ratings are my own.

funny book

I chose this rating of four stars because it kept me interested and and was funny.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I thought some of the words were hard to read. I am

in 3rd grade. Even though some words were hard for me I still understood the story.

I also enjoyed seeing pictures during the book. It helped me to visualize the story. I would recommend this book to kids who like to read about funny best friend stories.

Title: Under the Freedom Tree

Author: Susan VanHecke

Narrator: Myra Lucretia Taylor

Format: Unabridged

Length: 15 mins

Language: English

Release date: 03-28-14

Publisher: Recorded Books

Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10

Publisher's Summary:

Taut free verse tells the little-known story of the first contraband camp of the Civil War - seen by some historians as the "beginning of the end of slavery in America". One night in 1861, three escaped slaves made their way from the Confederate line to a Union-held fort. The runaways were declared "contraband of war" and granted protection. As word spread, thousands of runaway slaves poured into the fort, seeking their freedom. These "contrabands" made a home for themselves, building the first African American community in the country. In 1863, they bore witness to one of the first readings of the Emancipation Proclamation in the South - beneath the sheltering branches of the tree now known as Emancipation Oak.

Illuminating story of the Civil War

Excellent historical story of an event that few have ever heard about. Well researched, beautifully written in free verse with outstanding illustrations. A wonderful read for elementary children and teachers who will be transported back in time to the end of the Civil War.

it tells a wonderful story.

Superb! Regardless of the age of the reader, it tells a wonderful story.

Still pictures fall flat.

This review is for the DVD, not the book. The book is good, but the DVD presentation of the book leaves much to be desired. I guess the producers didn't want to spend much money on it. The pictures are static. The camera simply pans the pictures from the book--nothing moves. It's a lot like watching a filmstrip, for those of us old enough to remember filmstrips in school. My experience as a children's librarian is that 21st century children aren't satisfied by these DVDs with still pictures. They are used to more pizzazz. I bought this for the children's room of my library. I'm disappointed because I expect this will be a shelf-sitter, and I've wasted the library's money.

Favorite childhood book

I was at a loss to choose an appropriate book for my nephew. I solved my dilemma by looking on my bookshelf and selecting a favorite of mine. The illustrations are original and highly detailed and the story is timeless. The content focuses on themes that children can learn from and adults can appreciate. The mice cope with oppression, fear of the unknown, teamwork and the ramifications of choosing an aggressive form of conflict resolution instead of a peaceful one. With all of this great content, it's still a fun adventure story for the kids.

Five Stars

Such a sweet story!!!!

This book is an all-time favorite of my now grown children

This book is an all-time favorite of my now grown children, who now read it to their children. Even my older grandchildren never get tired of it. Every time they visit, this is one of the books they want to read. I would love it if Sylvia Plath's Bed Book were republished. It would definitely be another favorite.

Five Stars
