"A fast-paced fantasy adventure which is both hilarious and hair raising" (We Love This Book)"This is a hilarious story, just right for boys age 7 - 10" (Parent's In Touch website)

Entry level horror - PG rated
My boys (aged 6 & 8) are big fans of werewolf fiction (try the Beastly Boys series) but this is the first book we've come across where turning into a werewolf is a BAD thing. Generally you go hairy and get superpowers whilst retaining your human level control.
Not so here. Sammy Feral's family get turned into the type of werewolf that goes mad and tries to eat everything / turn everyone. Sammy discovers that he has a gift which allows him to understand mythical creatures - unfortunately this means that when his Dad tells him he's going to rip him to pieces (when a werewolf), Sammy can understand what he's saying. This is obviously very frightening for him, and the author pulls no punches with describing fear / sadness / panic.
The storyline is obvious enough for the boys to get a thrill from the scarey bits, but know it's going to be OK. You wouldn't perhaps put this on for a 6 yr old on a dark, night journey on a full moon though ....

    My students love it.
    Wyoming Teacher loves to read
This book is great for a reader that may have a hard time reading for understanding. It is a very sweet story about two very different cousins upbringing. They find out they both have strengths. Quick read and can picture the story in your head, like a movie.
    Daniel's review
I did not like the book. It was too easy. I would not recommend to a 7th or 6th grader, more like a 4th or a beginning 5th grader. It is a childish book.
The story is about a two girls named Bonny and Bobbie. Bobbie comes from California to see her cousin and to learn how to ride bulls. One day when they wake up they find some one stole their horses, cows, and their bull, Diablo. Will they find the thieves?
    It's okay
The book Hook Em Snotty is the best book that I have ever read. it is best suited for ages 9-12. The book isn't very long so if you don't like very long books and you like country life then this is the book for you.It starts with a grandpa and his grandaughter living on a ranch. The grandaughter has to go to the grass plains every summer to round-up wild cattle. Then her cousin from the city shows up and the grandaughter has to take the cousin with her. They are ridding through a conyon and the horse gets spooked and the cousin gets thrown off the horse into a mud hole. Then they get to the corral where they put the wild cattle. then they set up camp for the night. If you want to find out the rest of the adventures that they encounter read the book Hook Em Snooty. My opinion of this book is very good. Gary Paulsen had very good deatil about the grass plains.

    Title: A Negro League Scrapbook

    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Negro league baseball players didnt always get the respect that major leaguers received. And yet many - including Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, and Roy Campanella - quickly became standouts in the major leagues after 1947. Others didnt get to prove their mettle in the majors at all - or not until long past their prime. Leroy Satchel Paige mixed his blazing fastball with 29 other devastating pitches to win 42 games and strike out 402 batters in 1936. Credited with 175 stolen bases in one year, speedster James Cool Papa Bell delighted fans by scoring from first base on a bunt. And powered by steroid-free meals, Josh Gibson hit 75 homeruns in 1931 - with one blast sailing 580 feet and another shattering a seat in Yankee Stadium. New York Times best-selling author Carole Boston Weatherford compiles an enthralling summary of Negro league history that includes fascinating tidbits about prominent pitchers, hitters, utility players, teams, and traditions.
    Critic Reviews:

    Rich History!
"A Negro League Scrapbook" paired with Sharon Robinson's "Safe at Home" would make a great gift for boys ages 10 - 16. Add a baseball glove and other gear and you are sure to score a home run with your loved one!
The history in "Scrapbook" should be taught to our boys at school or in church -- please don't let this history die! "Safe at Home" has great insight into the thought processes of boys dealing with death, moving, peer pressure, bullies, teamwork, hard work, and perseverance. This would also be a great gift for a new teacher looking for high quality history and / or sports books. Enjoy!
Share This Important Past With Someone Today
With the saturation of sports coverage today, great teams & players are as disposable as the paper boxes for a fast-food meal. That is what makes A Negro League Scrapbook so important for young people.
With a forward by the great Buck O'Neil, the book takes the reader through the pre-NLB era to 1947, when Jackie Robinson donned the Brooklyn Dodgers uniform and desegregated Major League Baseball. The rich history of NLB includes no discrimination in the stands, on the field or in the front offices.
Through the use of archival photographs - in a layout like a family album - and creative, short cutlines/overviews, the book can be a fun study tool for family members. It is important that our future leaders in all walks of life learn about the past today to forge ahead with a clear understanding of the journey to tomorrow.
Young people will not learn about NLB - or the pre-NLB era - in most history classes. And the names Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Buck Leonard, Josh Gibson and - importantly - Buck O'Neil need to be understood in an overall historical sense as much as appreciating their achievements on the diamond.
Carole Boston Weatherford has touched all the bases - and home plate - with a book that adults and children can share and learn from for many years.

    INCOMPLETE STORY
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Having the final sentence included in this audiobook!
What did you like best about this story?
Everything apart from the lack of ending.
    Any additional comments?
Ordered this audiobook as I used to listen to this on cassette when I was a child, and loved it! I was so excited when I finally found a digital copy, and was happy to pay, only to listen to it and find that the ending has been cut off! For anybody that hasn't read the book/doesn't plan on reading the book, the ending will forever be a mystery! I enquired and was passed between several people but no resolution has been found or attempted. You're better off just reading the book in it's entirety!
    Good Book, bad recording
What would have made Dont Pat the Wombat better?
I downloaded this wanting to do a listening post for my child that is reading the book. My son was reading the book as he was listening. This audiobook skips paragraphs and even chapters and makes following along to increase his reading fluency skills a heartache. Not worth the download at all. If you're going to make an audiobook for it at least have the whole book (the ending was chopped off) and don't skip paragraphs let alone chapters.
    Love it!
Listened to this when I was a child and I'm very glad to have found it again.
Great story, very emotional, now I'm able to understand a lot of the jokes that went over my head as s kid.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is a story from the Famous People in History collection.
Here are the stories of nine people whose energy, imagination, courage, and determination changed the world. From Christopher Columbus who set off into unknown seas in a small ship in the 15th century, to a young girl, Anne Frank, caught in the turmoil of the 20th, who wrote a remarkable diary while in hiding in Amsterdam during the Second World War. Their personalities and their achievements make them heroes and heroines for our time also. This program features short biographies of Christopher Columbus, Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Lord Nelson, Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale, Abraham Lincoln, and Anne Frank.
    Editorial Reviews:
Nicolas Soames profiles Queen Elizabeth I, who came to power in November 1558 and ruled England until her death in 1603. England flourished under Elizabeth's reign, seeing the exploits of Francis Drake, the blossoming of the arts with the works of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, and great political stability. Soames charts the origins of Elizabeth's rule and highlights the major details in her biography, which Katinka Wolf performs with distinction. With her sonorous style and crisp diction, Wolf brings an appropriately regal quality to the story of the Virgin Queen.

    Kids need heroes...
I entertain my minivan-bound children with books on tape/CD. The best are the Harry Potter series. There are many other good ones. And this is a good non-fiction title for children.
Kids need heroes, and this tape provides my 5 and 7 year old boys with some impressive ones. The heroes come from the worlds of politics, science, literature, religion... This tape is one of my 7 year old son's favorites. It has a very positive message for him. He gets ideas of what he could be.
Volume 2 (the one I have) tells the stories of some historical figures, emphasizing all the positive and heroic qualities of each: Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, and George Washington.
As an adult accustomed to having his heroes routinely discredited, I find these idealized portraits naive, but kind of refreshing. If you have kids you know that they have a purpose: to introduce you to the world again, and show you its wonder. These portraits of heroes are simplified and abstracted in a way that highlights their abilities. No jaded cynicism here. These scientists, thinkers, statesmen, musicians, were all leaders. My young leader could do worse than to select a role model from one of these larger than life heroes.
    Two other notes.
    1. The tapes are abridged, while the CDs are not. Buy the CD.
    2. Amazon has one description for both volume 1 and 2. Misleading. They contain different people.
Vol 1 - Queen Elizabeth I, Abraham Lincoln, Christopher Columbus, Horatio Nelson, William Shakespeare, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Vol 2 - Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, George Washington (This is the one I am reviewing)
Great cds for kids and adults!
Got 3 of the series for when my 7 and 10 year old grandkids would be spending a week with me.

    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most important patriots in post-Revolutionary times. Most readers know Noah Webster for his dictionary masterpieces and his promotion of a living "American Language" that embraces words and idioms from all its immigrant peoples. But he was also the driving force behind universal education for all citizens, including slaves, females, and adult learners. Speaker of twenty languages, he developed the new country's curriculum, writing and publishing American literature, American history, and American geography. He published New York City's first daily newspaper. As editor, Webster conducted a study and linked disease with poor sanitation. He created the country's first insurance company, established America's first copyright law, and became America's first best-selling author.

    easy to read and understand
Very interesting, simple facts, easy to read and understand. My nine years old enjoyed reading it.
Noah Webster, an important American character
This book describes that Noah Webster is more than just the author of the famous dictionary. Webster was also known for his work of writing and publishing America's first spelling and reading books, history and geography texts. He also wrote on politics, agriculture, disease, education and against slavery. The book makes clear that Webster was a busy man with a number of different interests and concerns. It seems that he followed through with his father's request "`I wish to have you serve your generation and do good in the world and be useful'" (p. 8).
This short biography is clearly written in a way to be of interest to young readers but also detailed enough to hold the interest of adult readers. I found the illustrations to be appealing and helpful in understanding the historical time period of Noah Webster's life. I especially appreciate the little boxes included on nearly every page that add a level of depth to the well-written text. Some of these boxes provide historical context that helps situate the work that Webster engaged in during the different periods of his life. These boxes further help the reader to understand how the work that any historical figure does is important within the greater context of historical period. This little book provides a personal perspective to an important period in American history.
Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children
The name Noah Webster often brings to mind his famous dictionary, now published as the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Beside his work as a lexicographer researching languages and compiling words for dictionaries, Webster also devoted much of his life to writing textbooks, teaching spelling to the general public, and advocating for educational reform. Nicknamed "Schoolmaster to America," Webster fought hard for free public schooling for all people regardless of race, gender, or class, and he also argued for the importance of small classroom sizes and sufficient books for every student.
With Noah Webster: Weaver of Words, Pegi Deitz Shea has composed an informative narrative that has just the right blend of historical record, tight writing, and intriguing tales to interest young readers. Also woven in are some important themes regarding the economic challenges of the American Revolution as well as the economics of public education.
