I would recommend it! Its adventurous, with rich characters and an intriquing setting.

What did you like best about this story?

The descriptive aspects of Cairo's teeming life, exploring the City of the Dead. Often, for me, it takes longer to empathize with not only the characters but story and action. Mother Nile, I felt pulled in from the first paragraph

Have you listened to any of Colin Fluxmans other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not. I liked the "mellow" British accent. An easy voice to listen to. Skill at narrative flow. He evokes emotions well, excitement, fear, etc. Very good with this effort. Though I'm not an expert, I thought he did a fantastic job with pronunciations.

I've listened to a half dozen or so of Warren Adler's works. This is the best one... so far. I am happy to give my honest review of it. I think I'm suppose to mention how reviewing this was voluntary on my part too.

A very meaning filled story!

I enjoyed the historical aspects of this book. I have read other books about Egypt and find it a fascinating place. This book brings Egypt into contemporary times. The story circles around the ideas of what we see as modern, superior life and then shows us the alternative life's with its values. He book starts out at a fast pace, and I ended up going back and listening a second time, as I felt I had missed things. I did that in another part of the book where my attention was adrift. I enjoyed this book. It was well written and had a satisfying ending.

Not my cup of tea

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. I could not get all the way through this book. The way it started out was very good. The story of how Si wanted to learn of his mother's past and find his sister was great. What I did not enjoy was the way the story bounced from Si's perspective, then to his mothers. I can't put my finger on it, but something about it just didn't flow well for me. What i did get through of the book was slow and somewhat boring.

A very awesome book cover

The God Aengus Óghad had cursed & taken Fionn mac Cumhaill (legendary warrior, aka Fionn OâHanlon) power from him until he could save Ireland from doom.

Nora OâReilly was of no help to him either as the Irish Civil War ravaged on.

Turlough OâMoore had heard Robert OâHanlon (wealthy merchant/adventurer) had been hung & died.

He seemed to be quite alive & well.

Dublin, Ireland. Nora (ex-Provo, Andersonstown) & Fionn needed to make a trip.

She would leave a note for Cormac (husband), & Katherine âKatâ (Cormacâs wife) telling them where the 2 had gone.

Captain Deane was mighty proud of the Barke Burre (ship).

With some reluctance, he agreed to transport Nora, Fionn & Bran (dog).

MacSweeney (quartermaster) greeted the 3 of them.

The ship & crew had been attacked by pirates.

Captain Deane had been hurt.

Nora treated his wound, but new infection would take its toll on him sooner/later.

The ship was going to make a pit stop at Cork (village) for major repairs to its hull.

Fabulous fast moving story!

Amazing true story about a man with a simple desire to fulfill his purpose on earth. His talent was "tickling the clouds to tears". This has to be the most powerful story for the whole family since "Simon Birch".

Yes, easy to listen to. Reader's voice is so soft you feel like you are being read to, by your Mother, just before bedtime, as a kid.

What about Christopher Blairs performance did you like?

Christopher does a fantastic narrating job with his tone and voice fluctuations. His accent lends itself well to the story. I almost felt like Charlie was telling us the story himself.

The award: a novel

Another great book that I read from steel. She always takes you in an adventure in her life I feel or order people. I also like that her books have a happy ending. Life is hard enough so at times you sit down and read a book from her and you say. My life is simple glad I did not have to go thru that what she wrote. Makes you appreciate your own life what we have. Many thanks again steel and keep on writing.

Wonderful, warm read

This was a heart-warming book about a woman who just wanted to "keep family" and love them. Like many of us, she is challenged in the pursuit of that goal, and saddened many times. In the end, her family holds her up and give her the only thing that she values, which is love.

The Award at the End of a Most Rich Life.

The long life-span of the main character is most inspiring and to have the effort of her granddaughter rewarded at the end is really a feat.

Another enjoyable tale

I just can't believe how much these two brothers achieved at such a young age! Without giving away the plot, this 2nd book in the series had some exciting moments!

I also enjoyed it because I like the way these boys went about the business of their lives. Their cleverness, ethics and loyalty are refreshing, and I am shaking my head at their dogged determination!

All the characters are enjoyable and well-portrayed.

Africa was such an unpredictable land for the new settlers. I feel like I am part of a grand adventure whilst safely ensconced on my sofa.

I am looking forward to the third book now!

LOVED THIS BOOK

What made the experience of listening to Langbourne the most enjoyable?

I will definitely read the next book. I found myself, laughing and kind of holding my breath with things and waiting for the ax to fall. Great characters and good story. I like historical fiction anyway but Jewish brothers emigrating to Africa in the 19th century was unique and interesting.

4 1/2 stars, you'll stay up late to finish it

Would have gotten 5 stars but for the horrible cover and the terrible red-herring title. Was this supposed to get it placed in the Mysteries section at local bookshops?

Mason's storytelling has always been stunning, and this book does not disappoint. While I wish he'd kept Piet alive for further adventures (no spoiler here, see the title), you'll be riveted to the pages up until the very end. I've been a fan since The Drowning People and can't wait for the next Mason book.

Wonderful read

My Think Tank buddies are always comparing books we've read. They frequently jab me about the 'different' books I read. "Who Killed Piet Barol?" Is definitely different. I loved it. It was about a time (early 1900's) and a place (South Africa) in which I have developed a recent interest. Characters are well developed and the reader would be wise to take care to keep them straight, in particular the African names and tribal hierarchy. Plot moved along well and I found myself often saying 'just one more chapter' late at night. I not only enjoyed the book but felt I learned some things too

Masterpiece

This book is everything I love : beautifully written with fascinating characters and a story that you become obsessed with. History of a Pleasure Seeker was one of my favorite book, I will had Who Killed Piet Barol to the list of my all time favorites. Smart. Sexy. Exotic. A jewel.

Couldn't put it down

I really enjoyed this book. It's beautiful and interesting and different from anything I've read. I highly recommend it. We read it in my book club and everyone had a different reaction. Great to share!

I've not listened to any of Mary Sarah Agliotta's other performances, but this one was seamless. It never distracted from the story, only drew me in further. Men's and women's voice were done equally well.

Susannah was the most memorable in that it was primarily her story and that she underwent the biggest change - from blindly obedient and to courageously principled.
