Entertaining

The writer really captures the feel oft he period, but I confess the romantic aspects of these stories feel a bit flat to me. I like the Sweet sisters, but they are more interesting to me single.

I like the idea of baking and cooking in wartime and the author really explores this area well. I will pick up the next one, despite the boring romance.

Caught by surprise!

Would you consider the audio edition of Fire on the Flight Deck to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version, and as such can't comment.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fire on the Flight Deck?

Basic training description was, for me, the most compelling, although the visual descriptions of carrier deck operations were excellent.

Have you listened to any of Patrick Freemans other performances before? How does this one compare?

I can't recall having listened to any, but I will going forward. Excellent performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud several times, and actually was upset when drama overtook some of the key characters.

I was provided this audiobook by the author in exchange for this independent review.

I was more than pleasantly surprised by this offering. Well researched detail, insider information, solid writing and excellent performance. The strongest piece of this story is , however, the characters. Each of them grow over time, and the listener is definitely "engaged" in their lives.

The story is well blocked out, and forms a concise package. I am very impressed by the combination of this author and performer, and hope to hear more from them over time.

Highly recommended to all.

Dry, uninteresting and had no excitement in it

Wish I would have read some of the reviews before I purchased this book. I have just discovered the world of historical novels. So was excited to explore more. This book was dry, uninteresting and had no excitement in it.

A must read for history and literary buffs.

A Rollercoaster of a romantic romp!

Where does The Baron's Quest rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This audiobook is one I truly enjoyed. At first the voice of the narrator, who was new to me seemed slow, but his enunciation was great and I really liked his interpretation of the voices of each individual character. I would gladly listen to more of Chandler's work.

What did you like best about this story?

This story had the audience battle with so many different emotions throughout the plot: anger, sadness, worry, laughter- I became engrossed in the story and couldn't put it down. It also had several moments that made me laugh out loud.

Have you listened to any of Stan Chandlers other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first Stan Chandler story. I have several narrators that I listen to regularly, and his style is unique, as it should be. I found myself enjoying his performance greatly, especially his vocal characters. I will definitely listen to him again.

If you could take any character from The Baron's Quest out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Baron Nicholas's friend John, as he sounds like he would be a good time.

I received this audiobook free in a contest, and have not met the author. I would give the audiobook 4.5 stars. It is the first book of this author's that I have read or listened to, but after this one, I definitely plan to read more of her work!

I have no idea what this author was thinking but she made it almost impossible to like Nicholas or Muriel. They both had the attitude that they were better than everyone else, he even had her sleep on the floor at the foot of his bed. Yeah, thats real romantic. She has nothing on and nothing to wear and she refuses to put on a servants dress on while hers dries and then wonders how anyone can wear something so coarse and scratchy? Really? And Nicholas was so full of himself youd have thought he was the King himself, along with those pompous asses Conlin and John.

And the wording, scoping out her body? or scoping out her whereabouts? Do you really think that scoping out was used that far back in history? And her telling of how to use that spindle was just crazy. I read that part twice and still couldnt figure it out. If I were watching it it might have been different but having it written was not telling me anything.

This book has the feel of the old classics like Treasure Island and of course Swiss Family Robinson. I love the classic American lifestyle and the moral compass they all had.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Ernest created the scavenger hunt for his fiancé and had her running all over town in a romantic chase. I wish I had been that clever with my wife. Then to find out in the author's notes that this scene was taken from the authors own life while dating was the best.

A Refreshing New Voice

Debut author Williams chronicles the ill-fated expedition of the Astrolabe and Boussole, which departed France in 1785 for the South Pacific. The fictionalized account of this map-making and territory-charting journey is an interesting read, in no small part because it is told through many charactersâ perspectives. Landfalls also is a reminder of how enormous the world once was. Travel in the Age of Enlightenment did not include a McDonalds in Moscow, or a Starbucks in Samoa.

Williams has a gift with description, and her prose shines when she takes readers through uncharted territories. She also pays attention to changing social mores, and addresses the debates and social issues in a less politically correct era.

What makes Landfalls, A Novel, really special is that in this risk-averse publishing environment, original voices are endangered species. The book is void of vampires or dystopian themes, and thereâs not a shade of grey in sight. Itâs an intelligent, well-written, painstakingly researched account of adventure. I would love to discover more authors like Williams, and I look forward to her next work.

Wow.

I wasn't sure what I'd get here. I'm not terribly into the 18th century, and the period writing is so often labored and awkward.

But this book is so different. The sentences shine like jewels, and the characters feel so real. People have real relationships, and they struggle with uncertainty. The historical research that went into this doesn't lead to pedantry at all; it is dispensed effortlessly and in perfect measure.

How interesting is it to read a novel when you know how it ends? Williams proves it can be absolutely fascinating. This isn't so much a nautical novel or a period novel. It is the most human novel I've read in years. Bravo!

Good novel but bizarre print edition. Like a workbook.

I really like the book itself, a real page turner. However, you should know that this edition is huge and flat, like a math workbook or something. I was very surprised. Impossible to carry in my purse. Also, the print isn't large or anything. It's a lot of print on one page, and the line goes so far over I lose sight of the beginning, and so seem to frequently lose my place reading. I have to use my finger sometimes to follow the line. Kind of bizarre to print it this way.
