Meh

This book is laden with clichés, both in narrative and plot. However, the narrator is excellent so, all told, it's worth a listen whilst going about other activities - since it doesn't require full attention and one can be distracted for several minutes and still catch on to the story.

So depressing. One occurrence after another of missteps. Didn't feel good at the end. It was okay but not something I would recommend.

Was excellent. A more believable story than the traditional Christian mythology. Like the change she made to the Judas part of the story.

A wonderful story

What made the experience of listening to The Testament of Mariam the most enjoyable?

Coming to the story with no preconceptions and discovering who Mariam was as I read about her journey.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Testament of Mariam?

Some of the latter scenes, I found it a slow burner to start with, but once the story and the journey got started I was gripped. Mariam seemed to blossom as the story progressed, and some of internal thoughts and scenes were very emotive.

What does Serena Scott Thomas bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

A depth to the characters, bringing them to life more than I would have if I had read the novel. Through the author's talent we saw this as a journey much the same as that of a Hobbit for example, but with so much more meaning as each aspect became clear.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Good Story and Performance Worth the Listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, with the caveat that this a decidedly Christian story. If you are a Christian or are interested in Christian history you will surely enjoy this novella. The veracity of this fictional story and the Roman persecutions is well documented in history. Nevertheless, even a non-Christian can come away with a good experience from this audiobook, if he is open-minded and willing to learn something of experience in the early Christian Church.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I believe that Lucullus would have to be my favorite character. He is deeply committed to his friendship with Marcellus, yet remains stalwart, and determined in his resolve which makes his actions so much more believable. Lucullus is real and his difficulties understanding the Christians and their ways is so plausible even from a contemporary perspective.

What does J. L. Wallace bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Passion of the characters. The narrator does a nice job of pulling the listener into the drama. Much unfolds here and the distinctiveness of the characters helps to bring this story to life. J.L. Wallace does a very good job of keeping the characters real in their place and circumstances without over acting them. I think this distinction in characterization does complement the story rather than detract from it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

If you let yourself, you can get involved with the characters. There were some parts that pulled on the ole heart strings. Give yourself to the characters and the story. Its easy to do with this one and the narration helps that along.

Any additional comments?

There is a drawback to this particular audio production. It has the sound of an older recording, in that there are pops and clicks throughout that could, for some, detract from the narration. It didn't particularly bother me or ruin the experience, but they are there and some may squawk at that. All in all it is no worse than listening to an old audiobook on cassette.

Jocelyn Murrays fantastic look at ancient Egypt is rich in detail and historically accurate in many ways. The story of the boy Khu is filled with many life lessons and is recommended reading, or in my case, listening for all ages. So nice to find a book that doesnt rely on dragons or fancifully characters to tell a story. Khu gives us a realistic feel for difficult, often frightening times experienced by the ancient Egyptians. The narration by Michael Troughton is expert. Khu was enjoyable start to finish.

The descriptive adjectives Ms. Murray employs.. Are to die for.. As an artist I listen to audio books as I work.. Her words painted an amazing story ...

The Perfect End of a Great Epic

After listening to "Pray For Us Sinners", I bought, that same day, and began reading this second volume of a 2 part drama. Patrick Taylor is a master story teller. Combined with a magnificent narration, I have been thoroughly entertained morning noon and night by this literary/audible 2 part masterpiece.

You can read my review of the first book and give a "ditto" to this one. I can not give enough praise, and express enough gratitude to this author and the narrator...perfect match!!

The realism no "happily ever after" ending. Very violent time.

Ahh the accent.

Yes. Cleaned my whole house while listening. I could not hold still and could not put the book down.

The futility of sectarian violence and an intertwined love story. Patrick explores the problem from both sides with understanding.

Loved the book and the narration is amazing, really immersive.

Another Cornwell Corker!

I only really discovered this author through audiobooks. His ability to develop genuine characters amidst the bloody violence of historical military campaigns is second to none. The sweeping battle scenes which are epic in nature are augmented with black, almost gallows humour and enough historical accuracy to satisfy most. I commend Cornwell for the fact that he dutifully sums up the history and where he has deviated from it in notes at the end of his books. Additionally providing other recommended reading for those interested in finding out more. If you like well-paced, bloodthirsty history books written with intelligence and panache then Cornwell is your guy and this isn't a bad place to start exploring his work.

Having previously read this book I was a little dubious about having it as a audible book, but it was brilliant

the narration was brilliantly done, bringing the story to life.

Well worth the investment if you love this period of History.

Another good book from Bernard Cornwall, putting you into medieval England and France as an English Longbowman. The best thing about Cornwall are his battle scenes, in which Harlequin does not disappoint. He manages to put you right in the thick of the action, while also giving you a global picture of what is happening across the battlefield at the same time.

The narration is not the best but it was never bad enough to take me out of the story.

Also, I found some of the characters a bit thin compared to the well thought out characters in his later books, such as The Saxon Stories. This is why I dropped a star for the story. But if you have enjoyed other Cornwall books, I recommend you try this one.

Good but not as "Great" as the first book

I really enjoyed Eva Stachniaks The Winter Palace and had been greatly looking forward to Empress of the Night. And while its certainly an enjoyable read, the sequel didnt quite live up to my expectations. For some reason, Stachniak employed a completely different narrative strategy in Empress of the Night, trading in the lively first-person voice of Catherines servant Varvara for Catherines own death bed ruminations. The difference in narrators, along with a convoluted plot structure, makes Empress of the Night less immediate and far more confusing than its predecessor. While the action in The Winter Palace unfolded over years, in Empress of the Night it all takes place on the final two days of Catherines life. In order to span the remaining decades of Catherines life, the book relies on a muddled series of flashbacks, so that it is often unclear from paragraph to paragraph what event or decade is being discussed. While Stachniaks prose is still lyrical and evocative, the book overall is not as gripping as the first.

The narrator does a lovely job with an almost impossible task, creating different voices for a huge cast of characters with widely varying accents. Her voice is very expressive and dramatic, which makes the audio version more compelling than the print.
