Loved the twists and turns

Loved it...kept me up into the night and look forward to another sequel. Can't wait to see what happens to Charlie & Lena in book #3.

Tempo, Texture and Tension in This Compelling Adventure from JA Sanchez

JA Sanchez thinks big. Big story lines. Big characters. Big ideas. In WHAT the DEVIL KNOWS, she tackles the biggest idea of all: the nature of evil and the inability of innocent people to escape from it.

This book is an intriguing development of the personalities and plot threads established in LANDLOCKED, published two years prior. In reading WHAT THE DEVIL KNOWS and its predecessor, one suspects that Sanchez has more in mind than these two volumes. It appears likely that the LANDLOCKED series will be big â quite possibly a multi-volume family saga with releases every two years or so for the foreseeable future.

WHAT THE DEVIL KNOWS re-connects the reader with Charlie Thibideaux. As a result of some cross-border adventures gone particularly awry, Charlie â along with true love Lena and his children Max and Oriana â are on the run from a vicious Mexican drug lord, Eulojo. Fortunately, Charlie is rich and smart. He has plenty of cash, limitless resources â and a loyal sidekick and business associate Remi who helps plan and execute the family's life on the run. Charlie encounters obstacles at every turn. Heâs up against not just the devil (who seems to know everything), but a bevy of lesser demons as well, including a sexy ex- fiancee, a story-hungry TV executive, and a gang of thugs who blindly carry out Eujolo's bidding. Even Charlieâs own mother Brenda goes out of her way to butt heads with him. On the other hand, Charlie himself is no angel. Lena has a husband, the father of her child, Giselle.

The over-riding presence driving the story is Eulojo, evil in the flesh. This is interesting. You see, Eulojo is Lenaâs brother. And you know how protective, possessive ... and downright irritating ... some brothers can be. Eulojo, Lena and their kin redefine the concept of the dysfunctional family.

The adventures take the reader from San Diego to Louisiana and Charlieâs birthplace in New Orleans. And itâs a great ride ... with children kidnapped, guns fired, knives drawn and verbal barbs thrown like confetti. One characteristic that makes Ms Sanchezâs technique interesting is the way she unfolds the story.

The first time I read this story was in David Bain's Newsletter, "friends Of Bain". And, the first time I met Mike Menger was in Bain's excellent novel, Gray Lake. I liked this character straight away. I do love a good baddie, and Dave is very good at writing baddies! I really like Curt Campbell's narration work, and he's made this story so much fun to listen to. He's very good at making the different character's very distinct. If you love a good tale, with great narration, this is one to try.

This book was absolutely fascinating. David Sterling; the founder of the special air service, was an courageous and fascinating character that is easy to like in this portrayal of him. I was hanging on the edge of every word spoken in this incredibly entertaining book. I haven't enjoyed or been fascinated by a story as much as I have here in a long time.

I was fascinated; educated, entertained and enthralled by the storyline and enjoyed the narrator's dialogue throughout. Although he's no Paul Thornley, Sean Barrett did a sterling job (pun intended) with a brilliant rendition of Clarke's depiction of courage, survival and brutality that is demonstrated by our boys in the special air service.

Buy this book today. I am loving the 'SAS operation' audio series and this was the best yet. On to the next one!

In combat itâs all about The Team.

James Bennettâs The Team had a lot of potential but in the end failed to deliver. An interesting military crime thriller, the story was told in a dual track storyline alternating between the present and the past, sometimes between paragraphs. Unfortunately for this reader the story just never caught fire as the protagonist, Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Colby seemed, at times, to just be going through the motions of investigating. The story started slowly, dragged along, accelerated rapidly to eventually die with a literary whimper.

No gratuitous sex, language, or violence. Just a slog of a read.

Character development was this storyâs saving grace. The author did a good job of developing his characters to a point but never succeeded in giving them life. Just when the reader is about to find out just who CWO Thomas Colby really is, the tale just ended leaving this reader asking What Happens Next?

Sadly, I expected a lot more from The Team but Mr. Bennett just never delivered. 3 stars and that is being generous.

A "One sitting" read, make time.

A highly decorated member of a Special Forces Team, SSGT Russell Johnson is found by his wife, dead of suicide. Tragic, unfortunate and too common. But Agent Thomas Colby, CWO3, Army Criminal Investigations Division, seeks the reason. Usually a reason, is simply found and is clear cut, but not in this case. Colbyâs superiors and the Special Forces Command block his inquiry at every turn. Even to a tour in Afghanistan. The author takes us on a fast paced retrospective of the SSgtâs life on The Teamâs many tours in Afghanistan, alternately taking us to the Teamâs battles past and to Colbyâs current investigation. The Battle scenes, particularly the critical ambush at Gardez, are as clear and forceful as one can imagine. The development of Colbyâs confused relationship with the widow and his own family problems is well done and smacks of reality.

Colbyâs voyage From the Suicide Scene to his discovery of The Reason, make entertaining reading.

Beautifully developed characters; well designed plot and a wonderful grasp of description both of scenes and characters.

I can only hope there is a sequel: Iâd love to meet CWO Colby again.

A frightening descent into megalomania

Skyscape is a commentary on celebrity and the healing power of art which focuses on two men: Curtis Newns, a tortured artist, and Red Patterson, a psychiatrist.

Newns, the most famous painter alive, leads a life of quiet desperation. Unable to find meaning in his life or work, the painter has already attempted suicide. He recovered physically, but nothing moves him, neither the desperate pleadings of his admirers nor the tender ministrations of his loving wife, Margaret. Just as it appears that he may be emerging from his malaise, Newns learns that his masterpiece, the painting known as Skyscape, has been destroyed in a fire. The news sends him into another downward spiral.

Margaret, fearing for her husband, decides drastic measures are in order. She enlists the aid of Red Patterson, a flamboyant, wildly successful psychiatrist who has transformed the insular profession of psychiatry into spectacle, miraculously curing patients during sixty minute telecasts. A Dark, Foreboding Tale

Curtis Newns is a brilliant young artist, perhaps the greatest of his generation, who is rapidly descending into mental illness. Red Patterson is a brilliant but erratic psychiatrist who has become a celebrity for his spectacular cures in front of a live television audience. Margaret is Curtis' devoted wife, desperately trying to protect the artist from onrushing disaster.

Somehow author Cadnum brings these implausible elements together in a riveting, fast-paced novel. Margaret will do anything to help her husband, even consult the celebrity psychiatrist. Patterson will do anything to get Curtis painting again and so enhance his own reputation. Even if it means taking the artist out of civilization and holding him prisoner in a desert hideaway.

Will Curtis ever paint again? Will he even survive? What will happen to their marriage? What evil lurks behind the charming facade of Red Patterson and how will it affect all who come into his orbit? You will have to read the book to find out. To tell the truth, much of it is a little hard to believe. You just have to accept it and read on. And when you do you will get hooked. The tempo slowly picks up and by the end you are racing through the pages.

Love this series, I didn't manage to work out who did it until the end!

Buy these books in the right order!

I enjoy the series of Peter Lovesey's and bought the series in the wrong order. It doesn't detract from each of the single books but I have gone back and am working my way through them. Great, staple, English cop stories - usually without any American involvement. That's the way I like them and this one was set partly in America and Japan and it worked really well.

Throughly enjoyed this book... I nearly always give 5 stars, if I dont enjoy a book I return it or dont finish it. This book really kept my interest, unusual story, likeable main character, excellent narrator..no bad language, just a really good well written detective story. Have just downloaded the next in the series. Thank you Peter Lovesey:-) Also, thank you to Michael Tudor Barnes for great narration!

I love this book because it takes place in Navarre FL ...

I love this book because it takes place in Navarre FL which is one of the most beautiful areas in the US. Because I live on the Sound in an addition the has it own beach, my dog gets to walk on the beach. I do cleanup after him and he is always on a leash. It is too bad that most real residents in Navarre can not walk their dogs on the beach. It is a great place to enjoy all year round.

Could not finish this

The narrator was appalling, I have no idea what the story was about, I could not follow a single word of the 90 MPH delivery, I gave up after one hour of trying to listen, I should add that I restarted it twice to try to catch the rhythm, but with no success. I feel moderately guilty about posting such a negative review having only tried to listen to approx 1/6 of the book but I did try to do that THREE times.

I think the story sounds intriguing so I shall try the Kindle version.
