Publisher's Summary:
Clyde Barr's most powerful life-long instinct has been to right wrongs, a compulsion fed by a childhood tainted by domestic violence, a young adulthood working as a Third World gun for hire, and a recent stint in a Mexican prison that he barely survived. So when, only a week after his release, Barr receives a panicked, abruptly ended call from his older sister, Jen, pleading with him to "come get her" he's grimly determined to do just that. Nothing short of dying will prevent him from keeping his promise.
Even though he has no idea where Jen is or who has taken her.
Violence erupts almost immediately as a succession of hard men block Barr's path. Helping the ex-mercenary run his gauntlet is an unlikely ally named Allie, whose moxie and uncanny ability to read people has made her a survivor. Now, the two of them are on a propulsive, action-driven race against the clock to find Jen before the unthinkable happens.

Might Makes Trite In This Trope-Riddled Debut Thriller
NOTHING SHORT OF DYING is a competently crafted story told at breakneck speed, like a thriller screenplay adapted into a tie-in novel. That's the good news. The rest: this debut novel is collection of thriller tropes that offers no real surprises other than the mild one that the main character isn't named "Jack."
You've seen the hero, Clyde Barr, a hundred times beforeâthe hard-bitten military/mercenary hero with a kit bag of lethal skills and and a hurting heart of gold for whom this time, it's personal. Barr's sister is being held hostage by a an ex-military vet turned meth mogul, and Clyde wastes little time leaving a trail of broken bones and bullet-riddled bodies as takes up the chase into the high Rockies.
Throw in a few disposable sidekicks and the standard-issue sexy female shotgun-rider, and soon enough NOTHING SHORT OF DYING descends into a dizzying whirl of high-caliber combat scenes in which the hero absorbs superhuman punishment and keeps right on going. You know things have jumped the rails into pure silliness when the author trots out lines like "As I was thrown into the air, I tried to recall the last time Iâd had a grenade thrown at me" and "My whole torso pulsed with pain and there were wet spots in strange places" and "I stood, snow stinging my naked, red-streaked torso, and put the rifle to my shoulder."
Often, what makes this sort of thing work is a memorable villain with complex motives and a leavening bit of humanity, but the one in NOTHING SHORT OF DYING is largely kept offstage, and when given rare screen time, snarls things like "I was wrong about you, Barr. Youâre worse than an irritant. Youâre a nasty, hairy, nosey cockroach, and Iâm going to stomp you.â Yeahhhhhhh ....
Three Stars
A quick read, Entertaining with a lot of potential. Look forward to more books from this author
Great read
Reminds me of Jack Reacher. Good strong characters and story development. Can not wait until I get to read his 2nd book.
Fast flowing and original
entertaining and original story line that keeps it flowing----hopefully there will be a follow-up!
Nothing short of dying
4 stars is a pretty positive rating from me. The story was more than I expected, and Clyde wasn't the usual reluctant hero.
