All of his books keep me interested till the end can't put the book down read through the night.

Mesmerizing

Like the draw of dark water or the sway of a viper this novel demands attention. This is a dark novel, even by Hall's standards. All the characters are inexorably tied to the past and this past is bruising them and their loved ones. Lies, madness, revenge, corruption racisim, criminality, ambition, professional rivalry: Hall fills his novel with the ugly aspects of human behavior. From the Red Road at the edge of Coral Gables to Route 19 pasing through Cherokee, North CArolina, a complex manhunt for a wrongly accused Native American bomber and his unbalance step-sister, carried on by his newly informed lawyer father and policewoman wife and the local F.B.I. is manipulated by a local political clan which has been exacting revenge on familial bloodlines in the Cherokee Nation. Bodies thrown into ravines, patricide and death by savage dogs become part of this thriller. There is an ugly fascination here, a skillful shift from our familiar paths with Hall. Well worth the time.

The best of all the Hall writings. Great plot, well hidden culprit and a good well thought out finish to the book. Enjoyed every bit of it. Nob logia ting!

Great Book

The book kept me up all night! The story line was great because it showed a connection between the gansters and cops with a vendetta on their minds. I found it relistic and extremely enjoyable.

Sue Henry has always been one of my favorite novelists, but this outing she's seems more like she had to come up with a book to fulfill a contract, rather than enthusiastically creating a new entry in her series.

Surprised to be leaving this review

I've been a fan of the Jesse Arnold books for years, but this one wasn't worth the time. The plot was weak, the dialog was stilted and just didn't ring true, and the narrator consistently paused in weird places. I'm disappointed that I used my monthly credit on this one.

Much better pronunciation.

Reader was much improved from last book to which I listened. Story was interesting, however it did move slowly. I like the call out to Lee Childs.

Compelling

Compelling. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. It is violent, good people die but there is vengeance and justice. No drag-you-down drama.

Realistic story of cops who retire from the force and now work on their own, no longer hampered by law enforcement regulations.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. Excellent dialogue, thought-provoking and humorous.

Very good character development. Interesting story. Great plotting. Well written. Well worth the price and find to read. Great love story. Will read again and again. By all means take the opportunity to read and digest.

What a great story. Retired Cops, Evil uncovered, drug crews, murder - mayhem, revenge, justice, sadness got it all here. Great book. I will read more.

When a story absorbs attention, sometimes details are missed and a second listen is enjoyable as it fills in the gaps. I'll be listening to this one again. The hero is believable and appealing. His life and relationships are woven into the narrative well and though the villain is well flagged, there are plenty of surprises along the way to a solution of the mystery. The horse world in which the events take place is well described.

Thin plot, slow action

What a slow story! Very thin plot & far too pretentious. Would have made a reasonable short story. Jonathan Keeble is always good to listen to, but even he must have struggled with this

Justice Denied

This book was another in the. J.P. Beaumont Mystery Series by author J.A. JANCE. This was the first of the J.P. Beaumont Mysteries that I have read, and I am fairly certain it is the last. There were parts of the book that I did enjoy, however for the most part it called for suspension of reality way too much. For example, the Attorney General established a Special Homicide Investigative Team (SHIT). A task force of qualified law enforcement investigators selected to navigate politically charged homicide cold case investigations. The task force was known by its acronym (SHIT) which truly was a stretch of belief in a city as sophisticated as Seattle.

Investigators were charged with bringing closure to several sexual predator cases of men who had served their prison sentences and who had been released, but they never registered as sexual predators because they were dead. Likewise also being investigated were missing person cases who were also ending up dead, and the cases were tied together.

The book had many back stories that made it very confusing for this first time reader. The primary character was left dealing with the emotional residual effects of the death of two spouses, but the relationships which apparently originated in previous series were never explained. One of these spouses leaves him very rich, but you don't know how or why.

Likewise there were several back stories originating in the current book which just fizzled. For example the homeless shelter being run by the nefarious pastor Mark just packed up and went away, with no explanation. This was disconcerting as early on in the book he was a prime person of interest in at least one of the murders. Also the love interest of one of the murder victims disappears into the bowels of the YWCA never to be seen again, at least not in this volume.

The cast of characters is a mile long and not well developed, or is confusing and crosses the series lines over and over. This is not a series that I will revisit.

Good Book

Another good JP Beaumont book. I liked the earlier ones better when he was with Seattle PD but this is good. A little hokey with the acronym for the Special Homicide Investigative Team and Harry I. Ball who is always called by his full name.

A decent read

I read it. I finished it. I didn't dislike it. I didn't like it. For the price it provided decent entertainment, but I can't say that I feel compelled to return for more from this series. The characters seemed cut from cardboard - not badly drawn, just not very imaginative. The plot has some neat twists and the solutions don't strain credibility - once you've accepted the premise of the novel. I wish I could summon up more enthusiasm, but I can't.

As with the whole series, there are interesting twists to the plots.

Good to the last drop

I really enjoyed this book - there were 2 intertwined stories, and even though the bulk of the solution was revealed before the end, there were enough loose ends left to keep me hooked and saddened that the book was over. The scenarios were very original, and the main police characters quirky and likeable. I listen to and read a lot of books, and the originality of this stood out.

My only complaint is the SLOW narrator and pauses that had me checking my player. The narrator must have been paid by the minute because he made maximum use of every possible pause. I did get used to it eventually, but it detracted from the story.

British Procedural Mystery

While it is not fast paced, there was good character development which I believe is where the strength of the novel lies. Several folks commented on the narrator's slow style. I became accustomed to it, wasn't distracted by it and found him easy to listen to. Two mysteries are being investigated within the novel. I liked the way the author shifted back and forth because it kept my interest. Sometimes you could anticipate what was going to happen but not always. This is probably because you began to understand the characters better.

I honestly enjoyed this book although I realize this is not a glowing review. I would say that if you don't mind a slower paced story-line with a narrator that may or may not irritate you, I think it is a great book. I did not object to the narrator. This appears to be the first of the 3 novels involving Faraday & Winter that Audible carries. I am planning on listening to the additional ones.

A well done story. But, pay attention through out the story. The ending was ok.

interesting story-poor narration

very poorly narrated. i only got through it because i was on a long transatlantic flight. the narrator speaks so S-L-O-W-L-Y and makes the wierdest pauses in the middle of sentences. the story was good and could earn about 4 stars but the narration badly let this down. avoid.

another pleasurable listen

Its just a shame that Audible have not got more of the Joe Fraraday series to download. If you like your modern dective thrillers to have a gritty realism, a supurb cast of colourful characters and a good story line to keep you hooked then look no futher a really enjoyable listen. If you like Rebus, Morse, Frost then you will be pleased with another addition to the modern detective. The narrator Tim Pepper is perfect for creating the ambience and has a wide range of voices that make the whole experience a treat.

This is an old school Stephen Hunter thriller that grabs you from the opening pages and takes you on a frenetic race that never lets up until it reaches a tense, dramatic conclusion.

A family is taken hostage and the father â a welder â is coerced into doing a treacherous job; a professor stumbles through a lecture as he tries to find some semblance of order in his life after a messy break-up with his wife; a Vietnam veteran is now imprisoned in solitary confinement; and a bungling Soviet spy who loves living in America barely survives an attempt on his life. These and other âordinaryâ people are pitted against a diabolical plan to launch the world into nuclear war â and with the clock counting down to midnight they are almost out of time.

Hunter is a brilliant writer and THE DAY BEFORE MIDNIGHT is a âdoomsdayâ thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning pages. Originally published more than 25 years ago, my only complaint is with the publishing company itself and not the quality of the writing or storytelling. I read the Kindle edition, and as is the case with many older books that were recently formatted for distribution on Kindle, itâs as if they did a quick and shoddy job. Many sections run together and are missing the âbreakâ that would separate them on the printed page. It made some parts confusing â additionally, there were some screwy characters due to the conversion process that someone should really have caught and edited before its release. But again, none of that has anything to do with the quality of the story â itâs a terrific thriller and I highly recommend it: 5/5 stars.

Wow!! One of the best books Hunter has written. His characters are all flawed in some way, and yet he manages to make heroes of some. This a multi-threaded story. One jumps from one situation to another in the eyes of character.

Love the Charlie Parker Series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I find the word use by Connolly to be very evocative and entertaining. Plus, I really like the mix of mystery and other he infuses in his stories.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

For the most part. I do find it hard to be totally unbiased as John Connolly is my favorite author and I CAN'T wait for the next book...every book. :-)

What about Jay O. Sanderss performance did you like?

He has a great voice and does the different accents and characters in a believable way.
