I loved this book!

But then again, I have loved all the books in the Lincoln Rhyme series.

This story has so many twists and turns, I found myself having to go back over bits to make sure I listened carefully. Really likeable characters that I am hoping to meet again in future books.

Unfortunately the next book, "The Cold Moon", is only available in an abridged version, so Audible have really let me down (and others determined to listen to the whole series).

Typical Linc Rhyme

As with all Linc Rhyme books this is very involved but holds your attention. Every twist and turn has a reason to it. It kept us entertained for long hours on car journeys.

BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT

This book deserves an award, there are sub plots and twists that keep you guessing till the end and I defy anyone to work out the plot. Even tho' there are several sub-plots, they all knot together and yet it is easy to follow each one and the narrator makes it interesting bringing each person to life. Cannot praise enough - I stumbled on this writer by chance and am working through all his novels and have not been disappointed by any. Keep them coming please....

Not my favourite rhyme book

I have read others in this series and loved them. This was not one of my favourites. I listened all the way through but wasn't as gripped by thus one as others.

Good, but...

This old Marine was almost moved to tears by some of the passages in this story. And even I, no stranger to gruesome scenes on the battlefields of Vietnam, was shocked at the violence and depravity displayed by the villian. And I must admit that I usually don't care for female readers of mystery and detective fare but Carolyn McCormick does a fantastic job.

The story moves fast and the characters are engaging but there's a problem, especially with this abridged version. The transition from discovery, evidence gathering and interaction with the antagonist to the final climax is too sudden and seems to leave a lot of details out. As well, the developing relationship with Smokey's ex-secret service pal is given short shrift as is his role in the drama. He really contributes little to the plot other than sex.

My overall recommendation is if you want a quick listen and a fast paced and engaging story this is it. There seem to be many missing details that call out loudly for an unabridged version and I would hope they produce one. A great first novel. I subtract one star for the abridgement and a few silly but minor plot elements. Excellent reader.

Gruesome

Shadow Man was by far one of the most needlessly gruesome books I have read - violence for the sake of violence involving women and children!

Hard to turn off!!

As a long time audio book user some books are just hard to stop listening to. This was one!!!!! You wanted to find out what was going to happen next!!!

Not for dog lovers

If you love dogs, don't even consider this book. You will be sorry for the rest of your life. The violence against humans is especially gruesome, but hey, it's just a book, right? But when she got to the violence against the dog, it was the worst thing I ever read. I had all I could do not to pull the car over and be sick. Stopped listening and deleted this horrible book as soon as I could. I still think about this AWFUL scene occasionally, and it takes awhile to forget it.

Wonderful!

Fasten your seatbelts (in the car and on the couch) and hang on for a hilarious ride through a newly-created mystery writer's colony in England. Most of the authors are obsessed with their pets, obsessed with the resident critics and obsessed with their characters (and absolutely novel ways to get rid of them!)

There's no sex, no terror and no violence here, unless you count the many ways Lorinda [our novelist heroine] devises to dispatch her hated main characters, a trio of unlovely English spinsters. But there is wonderfully sly humor and a cast of memorable characters like 'Macho' MaGee, a mousy academic who writes horribly dated American gangster novels and Plantagenet Sutton, a terminally snobbish wine critic who does scathing book reviews on the side. From the fireworks-laden Guy Fawkes to the regrettable demise of Boswell the Rat, this marvelous satire will keep you laughing out loud. I highly recommend it!

And thanks to the narration of the ever-wonderful Nadia May, I now know how to pronounce 'pince-nez'!

Clever and entertaining

As a long time Marian Babson fan I have never been disappointed. She has written not

only her own characters but whole chapters of books which they (mystery writers)

are writing. It is disappointing that so few of her books are in audio.

I enjoyed the ending

This was a tedious book. I've read some of Marian Babson's books in the past and I was looking for a cozy so I picked this up. Nothing happened during the first several hours of the book. A lot of it was written as copy for the book series written by the protaganist which she would like to end as she's tired of the sisters who star in her books. Listening to the "pages" of the books about the sisters makes it easy to see why she would like to end the series: Miss Petunia and her sisters are tiresome.

I kept thinking something was about to happen and then, nothing. Just more daily life in an out of the way English village. When people finally started it die (I won't tell you how far into the book this was, because if you read it you, like I, should keep thinking, "This is IT!") it's quite a relief. When you get to the last bit, and I got there because I really wanted to know what was going on, you'll find it delightful, not because it's finally over, but because it's really a nice story. I would probably have enjoyed it a great deal as a short story or a novella.

The melancholy server

The trouble with Lou Fonesca stories is that they end. This is the fourth I've listened to but actually the first in the series.

I love the local colour, personality development and reasonably good story lines.

This is my favorite audible detective series.

My favorite read detective series is still Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer.

I won't cross gendres and read Fonesca or listen to Archer as I wouldn't want to choose.

There are similarities. Warm climates, urban deterioration often in the midst of affluence, islands of decent humanity in sea of human corruption, good guys that can be brave and tough without vulgarity.

For this audible listener Fonesca is the winner

Unexpectional!

Uh-Huh.... That's not a misspelling up there. There's nothing here I expected. Which I should have expected since I'm a fan boy of 5 of 6 of Kaminsky's Abe Lieberman's books (all of the first six except Lieberman's Thief - see my review to understand my pique)... And since there are no more Liebermans here at Audible, well I'm poking into his other stuff with 'Vengeance'.

And it was unexceptional. Which I should have expected since Kaminsky's such a talent. But who could expect Lou Fonesca? And I won't tell you why, since then you will expect what I've told you and well, that'd ruin a very good listen. And you'd expect the pace, tone, and glimmers in the construction of this plot. Or plots.

What was most unexpected for me though was Scott Brick. I did not notice he was the reader when I bought this book, else I'd have passed. Surprisingly Brick didn't impose himself into the book with his signature pomposities. Instead, they're gone leaving behind the man's undeniable talent for creating mood and characterizations. Maybe I'll try another .... but only if it's with an author I trust like Kaminsky.

While not a great book, nor on par with the Lieberman novels, I'll still follow Fonseca's growth in this series. Because Kaminsky's unexceptionally good.

predictable and repetative

A change of tone.

I didn't think I would like this book at first. I'm a big fan of Stuart Kaminsky's Toby Peters books. They are light, funny and a glorious, if at times surreal, glimpse of 1940s Hollywood. His new hero, Lou Fonesca, a refugee from the grief of his wife's death at the hands of a hit-and-run driver who was never caught, is only barely coming back to life some five years later.

It's not always obvious

If the reader believes what is obvious the wrong conclusions will be reached. The truth cannot be guessed, one has to hang in there until the end to find out what really happened. A highly recommended use of your time.

great book. very intriquing and well thought out. suspenseful until the end.

Disappointing

I was influenced by the positive reviews, but found the book very disappointing. Although it was probably all right as a stock thriller, I found the characters to be shallowly drawn and uninteresting. The plot was for the cardboard cut-out characters to suffer graphic violation, followed by predictable plot turns, and culminating in a happy ending. The psychopathic criminals were not realistically portrayed, and there was no sense of terror or of understanding of who they were or why they did what they did. Luckily, the narration was fine.

Alibi is Brownâs best; not only is it her best

THE ALIBI is my 24th Sandra Brown read. In my opinion, Alibi is Brownâs best; not only is it her best, itâs the best murder mystery thriller I have read this year. Hammond Cross, the protagonist, has been groomed all of his young legal life to become the country attorney general or solicitor general as they are called in Charleston, South Carolina. As a multi-generation descendant of a Deep South politically connected family, a man of integrity and impeccable moral fiber, Hammond Cross has the experience, attitude and drive to perform the difficult job of solicitor general. His investigation as assistant solicitor uncovers evidence of serious corruption in the business dealings of Luke Pettijohn, a well-known but shady entrepreneur and developer who turns up dead in his hotel suite with two bullet holes in his back. The investigation soon zeros in on a well-respected local psychologist, Dr Alex Ladd, who quickly becomes the number one suspect. Complications rear their ugly head when Alexâs alibi, and her life, hinge on a night of passion with solicitor Cross, the prosecutor of her case. Further complicating the investigation is the chief detective, Rory Smilow, who in his younger days was romantically involved with Davee Pattijohn, the murdered manâs wife who is still in love with Smilow. The primary and secondary characters are well developed and Brownâs dialogue is so enticing you sense you are right beside the talker. I give The Alibi a strong 5-star rating.

A really good read

I love romantic suspense books and nobody does them better than Sandra Brown. She is my favorite author of that genre. I have never been disappointed with any of her books. I really liked The Alibi, it keeps you guessing until the end. I liked the love at basically first sight concept. The book moves at a steady pace. I love the character of Hammond Cross.

Chung's emotional shadings conjure up a dark, brooding world where even the police can't protect the innocent.

Discover Grant McKenzie

I listened to another one of Grant McKenzie's books last week "The Butcher's Son" and had to wonder why such a good book that had been released last year did not have one single rating. That was a very good book and so is this one. Again, very few ratings but certainly worthy of listening to AND if you have kindle unlimited this book is free to read and listen to so there is no reason for anyone with unlimited not to get it.

This is a really good story of murders and rapes involving some of the police doing the investigating.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

First book

Winner of the Malice Domestic first mystery prize, introduces Chicagian psychologist Jack Caleb and Detective John Thinnes. When one of Dr Caleb's patients is found dead an apparent suicide neither Dr Caleb or Detective Thinnes believe it is the truth.

Twisting plot

This is an interesting story. It does not progress as the synopsis indicates. For Jack Caleb, the psychiatrist, being gay is a factor but not a major one in this book. Detective John Thinnes has problems he is working through. Those problems do not interfere with the story as he works through them. It is a mystery with plots and sub plots all progressing towards proving an apparent suicide is murder and solving it. The characters are good. The reading by Stephen Hoye is excellent. It was fun discovering who the actual murderer was. This is a very enjoyable audiobook.

Loved the whole series.

What made the experience of listening to The Man Who Understood Cats the most enjoyable?

I bought all 4 books as Kindle e-books and read them within 2 days. Now I bought the book as audiobook and hope the other 3 books will follow. What I enjoyed most were the characters. They really came to life for me. I could be happy with them and I felt their problems and disappointments. A great book and a great series. (Unfortunately only 4 books in the series)

It was ok. Though drawn out with Kurt's depressive nature. The novel could have been shorter giving more impact to the mystery.

Sean Barrett was great, as always.

True to Mankell form

Upon reflection I realised its been over two years since my last Wallender making this book all the sweeter, absence really does make the heart fonder. The combination of Mankells' driving narrative from the lips of Sean Barrett had me transfixed. I'd forgotten just how much depth both men are capable of infusing into seemingly banal situations. Only trouble is how addictive the experience is. Got a feeling I'll be revisiting past pleasures to get my fix.....

the whole book was intriguing. I loved it . narrator was fantastic. could not fault it .

audio interference

Another enjoyable Wallander thriller and very well read, but there is bad audio interference in the first 3 chapters!

Tantalising

The storyline was gripping from start to finish whilst the epilogue explained the missing pieces.
