Title: Girl by the Road at Night
    Subtitle: A Novel of Vietnam
    Author: David Rabe
    Narrator: Jeff Zinn
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-27-12
Publisher: Gelfman Schneider Literary Agents, Inc.
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
David Rabe's award-winning Vietnam plays have come to embody our collective fears, doubts, and tenuous grasp of a war that continues to haunt. Partially written upon his return from the war, Girl by the Road at Night is Rabe's first work of fiction set in Vietnam - a spare and poetic narrative about a young soldier embarking on a tour of duty and the Vietnamese prostitute he meets in country.
Private Joseph Whitaker, with Vietnam deployment papers in hand, spends his last free weekend in Washington, DC, drinking, attending a peace rally, and visiting an old girlfriend, now married. He observes his surroundings closely, attempting to find reason in an atmosphere of hysteria and protest, heightened by his own anger.
When he arrives in Vietnam, he happens upon Lan, a local girl who submits nightly to the American GIs with a heartbreaking combination of decency and guile. Her family dispersed and her father dead, she longs for a time when life meant riding in water buffalo carts through rice fields with her brother. Whitaker's chance encounter with Lan sparks an unexpected, almost unrecognized, visceral longing between two people searching for companionship and tenderness amid the chaos around them.
In transformative prose, Rabe has created an atmosphere charged with exquisite poignancy and recreated the surreal netherworld of Vietnam in wartime with unforgettable urgency and grace. Girl by the Road at Night is a brilliant meditation on disillusionment, sexuality, and masculinity, and one of Rabe's finest works to date.
    Critic Reviews:
[A]n erotic love story about two young people from opposite ends of the earth caught up in events far beyond their control.a meditation on the devastating effects armed conflict has on society, and on the psychological and emotional toll it exacts from soldiers and civilians alike.darkly comicRabes portrait is multidimensional and engaginghe reveals himself to be as gifted a novelist as he is a playwright.Girl by the Road at Night is Rabes cry, and it deserves to be heard. (The New York Times Book Review)
Rabe never romanticizes his characters. This is no Romeo-and-Juliet story of unrequited love and desire. Instead, Whitaker and Lan play out their roles in both tender and brutal ways. A powerful statement about sex, war and identity. (Kirkus)

War romance or another reason we should never have gone into Vietnam.
All muddy: a dreary tale told by a sodden dog of war. That's how I felt when I reached the end of this novel.
"A thoroughly disappointing Novel: this babysan numba 10"
"Girl by the Road at Night" was written by David Rabe. Mr. Rabe was born in Dubuque Iowa in 1940. Rabe earned an MA from Villanova University after being drafted into service in Vietnam in 1965. David Rabe is best known as an American playwright having won a Tony award for "Sticks and Bones" in 1972. He is the author of several novels. "Girl by the Road at Night" is his first work of fiction set in Vietnam.
This story is told by an anonymous narrator. Dialog is attributed to the person speaking. The prose is noticeably inelegant comprised of short terse sentences. The dialog of the Vietnamese is spoken in "pidgin English "style. A great deal of vulgar language permeates the narrative.
The story line involves the events surrounding a young soldier, Pvt.

New fruit that is free and plentiful
Now all but well established on the New York literary scene, it was nevertheless great to follow up Nathan Englanders stunning short Free Fruit for Young Widows which featured in The New Yorker magazine with a really enjoyable collection of short stories.
All range widely in topic, visiting and re-visiting a couple of central themes around a strong sense of place, belonging, tribe and sharing, displacement and threat that represent the various refractions of Jewish sensibility both at home (America) and abroad (Israel).
That a Dutch schoolgirl looms so large the in infinitely detailed, diverse and dense make-up of a people, and that a people will see themselves as a people despite the miles and the money is due largely to the legacy and continuing work of dedicated writers in this cultural tradition.
The very best of this collection is Free Fruit for Young Widows although there is interest and quality throughout - a great read.
At a time when there is much talk of inspiring the next generation, Nathan Englanders inspired and inspiring work is proof that the flame continues to pass and burns as brightly as ever.

    PRETTY DARN GOOD
I ALWAYS HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING GOOD FICTION BOOKS AND I DIDNT KNOW
IF THIS WAS ONE I WOULD WANT TO GET INTO. BASED ON THE REVIEWS I READ
ON GOOREADS AND THE PUBLISHERS SUMMARY, I THOUGHT THIS WAS
GOING TO BE ONE OF THOSE HORROR STORIES PARENTS HAVE NIGHTMARES
    ABOUT.ITS ABOUT A 15-YEAR OLD GIRL THAT MEET A 25-YEAR OLD SOLDIER IN A
CHAT ROOM. NEXT THING YOU KNOW THEY MEET; SHE HIDES HIM IN HER ATIC, HE
GOES AWOL AND THE WHOLE TIME THEYRE TOGETHER YOU THINK ABOUT HIS
MENTAL STABILITY. SOME HOW THE LITTLE GIRL STARTS TO KEEP HIM AGAINST
HIS WILL. WHILE ALL THAT IS GOING ON THE MOM IS DATING A PRETTY SHADY
GUY THAT IS INVOLVED WITH DRUG DEALERS. AND TO MY SURPRISE THE WHOLE
SITUATION WASNT AS BAD AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. I EXPECTED WORSE.
DAVID ZIMMERMAN DID AN AMAZING JOB ON THIS BOOK. THE STORY FLOWS
FROM CHAPTER TO CHAPTER WITH EASE. THE CHARACTERS ARE AMAZING AND
THE ONLY DOWN FALL I HAD WITH THIS BOOK IS THE NARRATOR. I PERSONALLY
FEEL SHE COULD HAVE READ FASTER BUT AT WAS AN EASY FIX. I GIVE THIS
BOOK 5 stars. AND I WILL BE LISTENING TO IT AGAIN.
Good story, would like more insight into narrator.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably. I think it's an interesting book. There are some really intriguing and exciting parts...it's a worthwhile read.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have liked a little more insight into the narrators reasons for what she did. I found the two sides of her personality - the public and the private -- to be too far from one another, and i couldn't understand her reasons for what she did with Logan.
What does Amanda Dolan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I enjoyed Amanda Dolan's narration. She did a really good job of embodying all the characters.
Was Caring Is Creepy worth the listening time?
Yes, definitely. I think I would describe it more as a Young Adult novel...so I would caution listeners/readers to go into the book with that in mind. There is a little bit of savvy missing in the writing, and I think with all the new novels out now with this type of story (Gone Girl, Dare Me), I have a little higher expectation.
That being said, the graphic parts of this novel are very graphic...and they definitely won't forget them anytime soon.
This book was a nice surprise!
I was expecting Caring is Creepy to be rather lightweight. Ok... it's not heavyweight, but it was certainly a nice surprise.
Well written, good characters and a story that kept you glued to the book...

    Beautifully written painful stories
I loved this short story collection. It's very wordy at times, sometimes distractedly so but most of the time it suites the story just right. Most of these have a dark edge to them; sometimes your surprised with a bit of humor, a nice touch. While dark, they weren't unbearably heart wrenching; they seem real, colorfully written and narrated in an understated way by Jennifer Ikeda.
Honestly, I originally purchased this book because Jennifer Ikeda narrated it but I flew right through it given how beautiful and endearing I found these stories. I am so happy I gave this little gem a go. Its provided quite a lovely journey.

    Very Nice
I quite enjoyed this book it really did open me up to the Spanish Civil War and lead me to do more research about that time. But I found the story in the present day and its link to the past a little bit contrived.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Uwem Akpan's stunning stories humanize the perils of poverty and violence so piercingly that few listeners will feel they've ever encountered Africa so immediately.
The eight-year-old narrator of "An Ex-Mas Feast" needs only enough money to buy books and pay fees in order to attend school. Even when his 12-year-old sister takes to the streets to raise these meager funds, his dream can't be granted. Food comes first. His family lives in a street shanty in Nairobi, Kenya, but their way of both loving and taking advantage of each other strikes a universal chord.
In the second of his stories published in a New Yorker special fiction issue, Akpan takes us far beyond what we thought we knew about the tribal conflict in Rwanda. The story is told by a young girl, who, with her little brother, witnesses the worst possible scenario between parents. They are asked to do the previously unimaginable in order to protect their children. This singular collection will also take the reader inside Nigeria, Benin, and Ethiopia, revealing in beautiful prose the harsh consequences for children of life in Africa.
Akpan's voice is a literary miracle, rendering lives of almost unimaginable deprivation and terror into stories that are nothing short of transcendent.

    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Joshua Mohrs work has been chosen as a New York Times Book Review Editors Choice. Here he takes listeners to 2003 San Francisco as the country divides into groups for and against the Iraq War. Damascus, a dive bar in the Mission District, becomes the unlikely setting for a showdown between the opposing sides. Tensions come to a boil when the bars proprietor agrees to host a show by an ambitious artist with a flair for the dramatic.
    Members Reviews:
    Awesome.
Joshua Mohr is just so damn talented. This is my second book of his, and it's just so well executed.
Kick-ass characters. All aspiring writers should read this book!
"Damascus" is Joshua Mohr's third book and by far his best. Mohr is masterful at writing intriguing, unique characters who are full of shortcomings and strange, wonderful views on the world they inhabit. How he constructs people on the page--unforgettable, living, breathing humans with so many more dimensions than most characters these days--is fantastic. The story deals with several people who orbit a bar, but it defied what I suspected it would be. These people had rich lives and deep backstories. I would definitely recommend this book (and have) to my friends. As someone who writes himself, I found several elements of Mohr's writing to inspire me to go write and I discovered new lessons on how to make my characters really solid and more interesting.
One of the best books I've read in years
A rich and enjoyable look at the characters some people may call losers. In Mohr's hands, they are anything but losers. His characters have passions, fears, quirks and big hearts. His skill at creating them make me envious. One of the best books I've read in years.
    Damascus by Joshua Mohr
Had a hard time finding this book but it was worth it. Loved the characters and the plot line. The bar setting was cool and reminiscent of Saroyan's "Time of Your Life". Also, it's the first book I read on my new Kindle which was also cool; although I am still finding the transition from paper difficult.
    Familiar Territory
An Edward Hopper painting or a David and David album transformed into novel form, with mixed results. This book is filled with the walking wounded, the doomed, the dying, the barflys, the artists, the night people; there is even the perfunctory whore with a heart of gold that reminds of Grandma Moses in "Barfly." Not much new can really be done with this subject matter, as the author as much as acknowledges in a nod to Bukowksi and Tom Waits. So you need to be a hell of a writer to pull it off, and Mohr doesn't quite get there. You don't really get any sense of place in this story - it takes place in San Francisco but could be anywhere at all, which is maybe the point. The author takes pains to illuminate the fact that billions of lives are being lived simultaneously and occasionally some of them collide.
The climax of the book is violent and seems out of synch with the rest of the narrative, it sort of comes out of nowhere (although it has been foreshadowed) and is more of a distraction than anything else. It distracts from some otherwise fine writing sprinkled throughout the book - the best moments are the quiet ones with two characters existing in the same space, trying to form a connection. The book could've done with a bit more of those.
