Classic, contemporary, Russian

So classic. So contemporary. So Russian. Hats off to the translator; thank you so much for the English version of this Russian drama. No value system, except survival, guides each character, whether child or adult; whether rich or poor.These people are running on emotional empty. With survival as the focus, no serious relationship emerges - meaningless love comes and goes, friendship lingers if useful, employee/employer commitment disappears, altruism surfaces for awhile. Men and women seek identity and purpose, attempting daily to deal with employment, housing, food, health, economy in a post-USSR Russia. The glimpses of each character leave the rest to my reader's imagination and understanding. I especially "see" the two women as dealing with similar issues, even though Seryosha's mom can escape to Switzerland while Seryosha's love fantasy, Marina, moves from apartment to dacha to other locations as they become available (yacht in Italy, Mihkail's apartment). Mind you, Seryosha is age 17 when this saga begins and his "mentor" is age 23. Mind you, Marina is caring for little Misha whom I believe to be her child rather than her son. In the end, it's the little kid Misha who brings meaning beyond survival to Seryosha's dad, and meaning to survival as Marina and Mihkail fade into the future. Hello modern Russia. I know these people. They are dear hearts, talented, educated, and surviving with humor,comedy,and creativity. Hmmm - is this true for only Russia?

Intriguing inter-personal story of Russian youth

A weird story, well-written with chapters from different characters' points of view. The premise seemed far-fetched, but the author was mostly successful carrying it off. Marina and her brother were not well-drawn characters; if they had been, it may have been a richer story to read.

When I was reading, I enjoyed it. But now that I'm looking back on it, I'm not sure why. The drama just sort of worked itself out and the characters were never fully developed.

I listened halfway through, but that was all I could take. The narrator was OK, but I was very disappointed by the novel itself, especially after all the great reviews.

Meandering story, awful voices, interesting idea

I can't think who would enjoy this, no doubt someone will.

What was most disappointing about G. Willow Wilsons story?

The characters were poorly drawn and paper thin. I found myself wanting the 'hero' to be discovered by the bad guys early on and put out of his misery.The use of language is often bizarre with invented words like 'presentist' and 'pietist' making an appearance.

The idea of computers and the metaphysical interacting is interesting but that's about all, the execution of that idea isn't too bad either but it is surrounded by what I found to be frankly, a boring, often irritating story.

Would you be willing to try another one of Sanjiv Jhaveris performances?

No - UK listeners who remember 'Mystic Meg' on the TV will be reminded of her weird voice that the narrator uses for the voices of the djinn. I found nearly all the voices used for all but the main protagonist are incredibly annoying and distracting.

Improves.

This started off in a similar way to Arabian Nights set in the modern world and expanded into a fantastical story revolving around demons, jenie and disaffected communities. Interwoven is the the story of the woman behind the burka. I enjoyed it but wasn't completely hooked.

Clever idea, but didn't quite hit the spot for me.

I'd recommend it to friends who like fantasy, but I might suggest they find a different narrator or simply read the paper version.

Throughout, Vicram's dark/gallows humour - a definite high point.

While overall the performance was okay, Jhaveri's accent (I think he has an American 'tint' to his accent) confused me.

What disappointed you about Eucalyptus?

the book has been abridged. This is very disappointing. I have read the book and it looses its magic when cut down to 3 hrs.
