The Ice Bridge- a hollywood novel

this book garnered great reviews from some but I found it a romantic novel with the typical hardships and the overcoming of these hardships by falling in love.Even though the ending is not a typical romantic one, you can guess what will happen if the writer writes another novel. This is an ok read but I would never recommend it for a book club.-too pat.

Too predictable

It was a tough read. Rather boring and really predictable. I had to finish it because of a book club, but if I were reading it on my own, I would have quit.

Enveloping

Compelling , beautiful story with vulnerable and realistic charters... Landscape and climate depicted in a haunting and artful and skilled manner.

Quiet and compelling

An unlikely love story which begins in the bleak early spring of Cape Breton Island. Two remarkable people navigate lives marked by loss, only to come together, step by tentative step. Beautifully written, with a promise of hope and redemption. Highly recommended.

Bravo!.

I loved this book. The characters were unique and interesting and the descriptions of the landscape made me want to visit Breton Island. Change was certainly a theme, and I did not find the ending to be predictable. A friend told me it was the first fiction she loved in a long time, and I stayed up too late last night because I couldn't put it down. Bravo!

Giving dimension to homeless

This was a great read. It was quite harrowing as the main character dealt with the death of his wife. The descent into homelessness was very believable and very well written. It was tough going at times but there was always some degree of hope. If you ever wondered how peole end up on the street, this book helps you understand the kinds of circumstances that could lead gradually to exiting normal society. One of the best books I've read this year

Waterline is the heartbreaking story of Mick, who's grief at the death of his much loved wife Cathy is compounded by the guilt he feels that her cancer was caused by the fibres he brought home in his clothes from the shipyard. Unable to face life alone in their home he moves to London and a job in a hotel. His disintegration is slow but inevitable and his attempts to return to normality are painful.

Amazing Vision

It is hard to believe that a book written in 1898 could have such vision and depth. I bought it thinking to have a little fun with a Jules Verne type steam punk romp, but what I found was War and Peace in space. The issues the characters raise about love, patriotism, free will are just as appropo today as when the book was written. And the hard science (it was written by a physicist) remains totally plausible even now.

Really enjoyable

Enjoyed this book and glad I got it on audio as lots of names etc. I wouldn't have been able to pronounce correctly! Really interesting to learn about the lives of orthodox Jews and a story that made me laugh out loud in places... not so appropriate on a cross trainer in a busy gym!

I found the content of this book interesting from the point of learning about different cultures views. I did think it could have been shorter and felt it had been 'padded' out in places.

Very interesting

A fascinating glimpse into a different culture. I love books that allow you to learn. The story is good but the ending seems a little too neat. All being shoehorned into an acceptable compromise or just giving in to the inevitable. Surely some people cannot accommodate this. Maybe that would never happen but for such an old respected culture you would have thought by the very nature of human beings some people just cannot fit into the rigid mould. Maybe that's a different book.

Nevertheless ignore my quibble this is a good book, well presented and of inestimable value to people like myself who have little knowledge of such a world and are very curious about it.

It was a predictable story, but easy to listen to. Some of the references made me laugh but others made me cringe. Some were wholly inaccurate!

What didnt you like about Toni Greens performance?

She pronounced so many Hebrew words wrong!!!!!!!! Surely this should have been researched first!?!??!?

I hope she's busy on the sequel

I went to school with Jewish girls in North London. The narrator worked for me.

What other book might you compare The Marrying of Chani Kaufman to, and why?

Very difficult to say in that it's almost a period piece yet not a period piece. A slice of 21st century London that you glimpse, but never get. Teenage girls in the middle of London who don't know how babies get made? Schools, that accept kids on condition that they don't have TV in the house? I've never come across a story like it where the values and customs are almost from another era, yet they have mobiles in their pockets!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The disastrous proposal was fun.
