A Most Unlikely Page-Turner

I enjoyed Mr.Doten's book immensely. I can honestly say this is indeed a fresh and original story, and very timely! The imagery and the use of a small boy as the voices of the pertinent personnel involved in the War on Terror is pitch-perfect, it is a most unlikely page turner. He gets to the point at the beginning, explosive situation after explosive situation; both intellectually and through perfect use of language.

The interrogator of the boy begins to see himself as one of those responsible for the carnage and corruption enmeshed in this dark time in U.S. history. A great story teller educates and informs as well as entertains. Mr. Doten has done that!

Original and Haunting

The writing is so fine, this novel pulled me right in, delivering an original, horrifying, sometimes hilarious and ultimately lyrical reading experience. The deft tonal shifts reminded me of early David Lynch--a head bobbing between satire and horror--but here those shifts recalled what I remember feeling during what seemed like an explosion of national psychosis post 9/11.

At one point, the book's Mark Doten character says: "The natural order one year--what we thought was the natural order--is overturned, the next it's proved just one out of many possible arrangements."

A mad assemblage of obsessive characters, most named after familiar 'dramatis personae' from the war on terror--characters crippled by blindspots and narcissism--stitch together narratives and meta-narratives in the face of this dislocating truth. (Where is "the reality based community" when you really need it?) As told in The Infernal, their story is a literary Frankenstein monster. It lives. It's horrible and beautiful.

Their voices also channel our collective gasp in the face of this real horror--terror, and our shambolic answer to it. We observe ourselves responding to all of the absurdity, denatured bigotry, cruelty and madness the book so fertilely imagines. It's something we do these days, in the privacy of our own homes, on television, in video games, or visiting the grand theater of barking insanity known as cable news.

THE UP-DOWN is kinda mainly for completists -- Don't hate me Barry Gifford!!!

Okay, look, I love Barry Gifford for a LOT of reasons. In addition to his own writing -- the Sailor and Lula books in particular -- he has written *brilliantly* on Jack Kerouac and William Saroyan. And he founded Black Lizard Books, those reprints of lost noir classics. I once blew my rent check buying a complete set at Okon in Tulsa in like 1989. So he is a God Among Men.

I'd have to say THE UP-DOWN was a litte weak. To be specific, it summarized a long series of events involving the son of the heroes of the series, both of whom have passed on by this point. I am happy to see anything he writes, but it just never caught me by the scrotum and made me holler. I'm sorry to complain, I love this guy like Powerball. It's not BAD. If you want to read everything in the series you might well be much happier than I was. Barry Gifford is a brilliant writer. I wish I could buy him a convertible Jaguar with polished wooden interior, leather bucket seats, and enough gasoline to drive from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Love love.

Well, that's that

It's sad to see it come to an end, but Barry Gifford has crafted a classic American saga with the Sailor and Lula stories, and now we can add Pace to the list as a full fledged narrator in the Ripley clan's tale. This one is a little slower, more introspective than the others but it makes sense now that Pace is in his seventies. He is a man searching for meaning. He finds some, remains seeking others and all the while the unexpected twists and bursts of sad violence continue to invade his life just as it did for his parents.

This is probably my favorite series of books ever. Definitely melancholy to see it pass, but Gifford gave us a nice coda here and one more ride through a world that is wild at heart and weird on top.

Practically perfect in every way.

Terrific Coming of Age Story

I really enjoyed listening to "Finding Sagrado." In fact, I think it should/could win a YA literary award. This was a well-written and well performed audiobook. The protagonist Shane decides to set out on a journey that takes him to places he's never been where he meets new people, makes friends, and even enrolls in a new school while in search of the fictional town of Sagrado. It was a good coming of age story and I love that it was set in New Mexico.

This story was richly narrated by Scott Thomas. He did a fantastic job. He did very well with the characters, differentiating them all perfectly. His accents were great. His performance was entirely enjoyable and completely flawless.

I look forward to seeing what Roger E. Carrier does next as well as listening to more audiobooks read by Scott Thomas.

Yes and I did.. I did not want to put it down.I wanted to see what was going to happen next.

Mr. Thomas was brilliant. His voice transported me to Sagrado every time I picked up my earbuds. He would be fabulous narrating a Nora Roberts piece.
