Brolly's Brave New World

Brolly has done something quite interesting with this book. He has created a dystopian future in a fairly credible way where the lives of the populace are completely dominated by Zero Tolerance for crime. The method of execution of those convicted of even the most minor offences looms over the "City" and casts a constant shadow making this an atmospheric novel. Then Brolly has put a police procedural thriller into this future. As it's a relatively near future and development has been constricted there is virtually no new tech so apart from the societal changes and the executions it's a world that feels largely familiar.

The characters are decently drawn and fairly typical for the crime thriller genre though Swanson's kleptomania promises to provide some interesting sidelines as the series develops. Rachel Atkins does a very credible job with the narration. It's no easy ride in this one given that the lead character has damaged vocal chords!

If you can buy into Brolly's version of how the world has developed and I think most will, at least in a fingers crossed behind your back style, then this is a decent thriller with the dystopian background adding an interesting spice into the mix.

An interesting idea that fell short

While the audio isnt long (maybe three ish hours) I definitely had a struggle finishing it. Mainly due to the voice of the narrator. I was fine with the voices of the characters that the narrator gave (as many of them had a unique quality to it) but other than that, the narrative quality was so monotone that I found myself zoning off at times.

The story itself wasn't bad. The idea was very creative but that alone wasn't enough. An animal working to solve a crime is pretty neat, hearing everything from that animals perspective, but the crime itself seemed to be lacking any detective work. The bad guy in question didn't seem to be linked to any clues given, but I will conceded that if I am wrong, the narrative voice causing me to zone out cost me to miss the link.

The other burden of the story was that it was longer than it needed to be. A lot of descriptive detail was put into things that didn't really matter in the grand scheme, and with so many characters through in quick, it became hard to keep up with everyone's names.

Overall I think it could have used some more revisions in story before being put up.

I woukd recommend last flag from this author instead.

Loved it!

An excellent story, fast paced and full of action. The characters were all well drawn and believable. Charlotte Stevens narrates well. As London is my home town I loved all the dashing around places that I know. I will definitely be buying more from this author. I highly recommend this audio book

Rubbish

I normal like books from this author but that was utterly terrible. what made a bad situation worse was the narrator who sounded like she was reading a children's story??

Very disappointing! Poor!

Not up to the standard and reputation of Stephen Leather. I bought this on that reputation and wish I hadn't! I would like to RETURN this book. Very disappointed!

Entertaining, not engrossing

For 2/3 of the story the plot seemed to be taking a steady amble through the world of film making. Interesting, and at times felt laboured because the plot developed so steadily as the characters were introduced and intertwined. Even as the plot became darker, the tension didn't seem to build.

Then the point of the title became clear! After that I enjoyed trying to work out just what was actually going on. Even though a couple of options were evident, predicting what was happening was difficult.

Not up to the extraordinary, and engrossing, Tango One or The Chinaman, but worth a listen for the plot developments after 2/3 of the story unfolds

What did you like best about this story?

The atmosphere conjured by hugely evocative writing - about lost silent movies, extravagant sets, a crumbling cliff top mansion. There is one scene when Peter goes to the kitchen and nearly eats a shiny fresh apple - only when he looks again, it's mouldering and maggoty. Something very strange is happening to time...

What does Peter Noble and Rachel Atkins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Peter Noble delivers a convincing delivery of young journalist Ed, catching his hesitancy as he tries to resist the lure of Leda. Rachel Atkins is tremendous as Leda; she could be sitting in front of you, drawing you in... The audio book frees your imagination to vividly picture the scenes.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The audio book drew me in and I hurried through it in a few days. I listened to the last hour in one sitting - I had to know what was going on!

This is Essie Fox's best novel yet set in 1976 and Edwardian days, presenting a small cast of vivid and unique characters. I loved this book and recommend it to anyone looking for an imaginative and immersive audio book.

If you could sum up Nimbus in three words, what would they be?

I'M STAYING INSIDE.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I particularly enjoyed Blake and his resilience to the fact that something so improbable and bizarre was happening, when a lot of people around him seemed to think he was way out of touch, he insisted on his theory which was in fact true!

Which character as performed by Mark Meadows was your favorite?

I particularly enjoyed the way he took on the characters of the coastguard, switching back and forth between two different people whilst maintaining the atmosphere required in such a pivotal and sinister moment in the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely yes! The book is so engaging and a slightly different take on the standard sci-fi thriller, I wanted to know more and more about how it would all piece together!

Speedway of action,ch30, very different and then off we go again! Some chuckles in ch44, then racing on to the end. Edge of the seat!

What made the experience of listening to Nimbus the most enjoyable?

As someone who has a hard time with their attention span, I really need the content and the narrator to help me stay engaged - this book does both. It reads at an easy pace, but picks you up in a whirlwind of drama, I had chills several times! What made my listening experience most enjoyable was the simple, yet so important, relationship between narrator and story - that sometimes audiobooks don't quite produce.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nimbus?

I am one that doesn't like to spoil, but it involves several sinister cows and is truly horrifying!

What about Mark Meadowss performance did you like?

As above, I said the book reads at an easy pace.
