Disappointing from Flynn

I expect the Rapp stories to move quickly and they do. However in "Term" Flynn has given us what is more of a story outline than a fully fleshed out novel. Some of the dialogue between characters is so brief as to make me think Flynn wanted to finish the book before his wife called him one more time to sit down for dinner with his girls. Audible only has the abridged version so that's what I listened to. Perhaps the unabridged version is better; I'll give Author Flynn the benefit of the doubt, mostly on the basis of the Rapp stories which I do enjoy. In this case though, I would like my credit back. Audible?

Not very interesting

It was hard to find this abridged version believeable. Maybe the holes could have been filled in had it been unabridged. Not a very enjoyable listen although I love Flynn's work.

Writing and narration are top notch

Only problem, I didn't notice it was abridged until it was too late. Oh well, my fault. I will definitely read more of Vince Flynn's novels. Great action, great writing.

Term Limits

This was sure a short book and I had to wonder if it was over. Do not waste your money on this one. You will not know exactly when it ended but way too soon.

SPOILER ALERT BEWARE Congressman hooks with the old buddy who has just killed (3) Senators. They go and kidnap an ex CIA guy and kill him ????? WTF ?

The Senator leaked the info that started the whole thing to his buddy. He ends up telling everything to his brother, grandfather, and girlfriend who is a reporter.

Entertaining All the Way Through

Some books take a while to build up your interest. Some never get to that point. The last one I listened to, I had to give up on after a few hours - rare for me.

It was nice that this one was entertaining from start to finish. Joe Barrett was a new refreshing voice for me - you can get tired of hearing the same great voice over so many adventures by different authors.

I enjoyed the action, mystery, political subtext, and the ending. I can't figure out why this book is only showing as a 3.8. The ending may have something to do with it. Good doesn't always triumph over evil - but can sometimes do just enough to keep a little of it at bay.

This is a good introduction to the colorful, imperfect detective. Ray Dudgeon and the backdrop of Chicago makes this a ripping good yarn.

Refreshing Detective Thriller

Chercover is fresh and original. The crime novel seems to have a formula that you see over in over in most books, but Chercover has taken a different approach to make the protagonist real. And having lived in Chicago for a number of years, I agree with the way he portrays this great city, and bemoans the loss of some of its gritty character.

Marlowe Style First Person Hard Boiled Detective

What made the experience of listening to Trigger City the most enjoyable?

Chicago is a dirty, gritty city. There are cops on the take, and the government is corrupt. This is the background for Checover's novel, apparently the second in a series involving detective Ray Dudgeon. Chercover's first book, Big City, Bad Blood, is on my list to read next.

Ray smokes too much, drinks too much, and has awful luck with women. He has a general distaste for authority figures, but gets along well with his cop pals. He's asked to learn the "truth" of a woman's death for a grieving father, and winds up finding a lot more than he bargained for.

If you like hard boiled detective fiction, you will like Chercover's work. I liked it so much, I decided to go read the first novel in the series.

Trigger City

I just finished listening to trigger city and I thought it was great! The hero is a down to earth big city type that is wonderfully read by Mr. Barrett. If you like Elvis Cole, Joe Pike or Wambaugh's characters you will love Trigger City

First Chercover book and definitely not the last.

Not His Best, But Worth the Listen

If you haven't read Sakey before, don't read this one first. Both Good People and The Blade Itself are better books, more tightly plotted, better dialog, characters more believable.

This book takes over an hour to get going, and it's a boring hour. The plot is predictable, there are no real surprises. The characters are interesting, but somewhat shallow. The final hour more or less makes up for the first.

The narrator does a workmanlike job.

Excellent 4-POV story by the talented Mr. Sakey

Really liked The Amateurs by Marcus Sakey. Well thought out, the central story is exciting, suspenseful, and kept me listening till the very end. The events are viewed separately by the four principal characters ala' Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet, light, in chapters which blend well. The only part that didn't quite work for me was the ending, but others may really enjoy it. Definitely a good read.

Implausible, hollow mystery

My wife and I listened to this and did not enjoy it at all. The characters are hollow, the plot is formulaic and the story is completely implausible. For example, several murders occur at the beginning of the book but then aren't mentioned, explained or investigated until near the end of the book...the characters seem to pretend the never happened. All-in-all, this is a book I wish I had skipped.

Borderline

Excellent, up to Nevada Barr's excellent writing. I have loved each and every book she has written and hope for more. Anna is a great character and so are the others in her life. Again Bravo to this book and the author.

Good book; great reader!

Laura Lippman's novel was good, really good, and had I not been driving, I would have read it on the page. But the reader took it to a 5. Linda Emond was perfect; she was interesting, had good variation in the voices and, remarkably, did not feel the need to overact. And she knows how to pronounce English words, something many professional narrators seem singularly unable to do. I'll be buying the book to read for myself, and will be actively searching for more narrations by Linda Emond.

Pleasantly Surprised

Linda Eamond is an outstanding narrator and takes the slice of life novel that covers from Baltimore from the 1960's to the present,and presents a riveting story. I was at first dissapointed that I hadn't chosen a 'Tess Monaghan' mystery -- but this was so well written and presented that the slower story line didn't disapoint me.

Rough Start

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It took a little while to get started, but once the story started to roll, it was great.

Good book, Good Reader

Very interesting story based in a richly complicated Baltimore which becomes as much of a character in the book as the protagonist. There is a central mystery that propels the story with a healthy momentum, however by the end we are more interested in the characters and where life has lead them. Interracial friendships and relationships are deftly handled without shying away from their stickiness. The reader has a good, unobtrusive voice. My only complaint is the ridiculous electric keyboard splices between chapters which interrupt the momentum of the book, have nothing to do with the mood of the story and just have to go. I felt bad for the author every time they kicked in.

It was OK

The book was pretty good. I expected it to be funnier, like Joan Hess' Arly Hanks series, but it was alright. It did get a little confusing when, about 6:45 into Chapter 11, Claire was magically transported from her couch with Peter to her office with Edward. Is that actually in the book, or did the narrator skip a page or 2?

Aggressive narration and unlikeable heroine

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I wouldn't. While the story is interesting, the main character is not very likable (far too impressed with her own take-charge ways). But the real flaw hear is the narration. There isn't much shading in the narration. It is the same level of complaining aggressive the whole way through. This book would have been much better told in the third person with a lighter touch on the narration.

How could the performance have been better?

A less strident, negative tone. More levels... Everything is read as equally important... Even the mundane tasks of life.

Ok. Not as good as some of the others,

but I still enjoy reading Parker.

Parker is in the woods fleeing after a robbery. A local guy Tom sees Parker and realizes hes one of the robbers. Tom wants Parker to help him rob a racetrack. Tom introduces Parker to other locals telling them Parker is a friend visiting. Parker joins the locals as they hunt for Parker. Its pretty good watching Parker interact with various local people.

Minor complaint. A security guard sees car lights at an unusual time. He goes to investigate, but the author did not tell what happened as he investigated. (Or maybe I missed it.)

The narrator William Dufris was ok, but not good for this series. He made Parker sound too ordinary.

THE SERIES:

This is book 23 in the 24 book series. These stories are about bad guys. They rob. They kill. Theyre smart. Most dont go to jail. Parker is the main bad guy, a brilliant strategist. He partners with different guys for different jobs in each book.

If you are new to the series, I suggest reading the first three and then choose among the rest. A few should be read in order since characters continue in a sequel fashion. Those are listed below (with my star ratings). The rest can be read as stand alones.

Another Good One by White

I have never been dissapointed in any of this authors books and this is not an exception.

People keep dissapearing as psychologist Alan Gregory trys to figure out what happened to one of his associates. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing till the very end.

The author does a very good job with describing the area around Boulder, the weather conditions and the essence of the community. I was very impressed with the way he blended information from a well known missing person case into the story without getting into the politics of the case.

Good plotline

Great book. One of the better ones so far,in the Alan Gregory series. The plot has some good twists that make it less formulaic. Also, Stephen White didn't have the annoyingly redundant phrases in this book like others. Not much in the way of relationship development with Lauren and Alan -- perhaps mirroring real marriage?? Enjoy it, I did.

Refreshingly different from other mysteries!

Would you consider the audio edition of Missing Persons to be better than the print version?

The narrator of this book was really wonderful. There were actually many times throughout his reading where I stopped to picture how a scene must've looked on the page, then how I would have read it in my head, and reached the conclusion that this guy was much better than my mental narrative would have been. The accents and inflections easily set the characters apart but were never cheesy or overdone.Lastly I appreciated his little touches, like making the characters sound slightly out of breath while they were running. Very well done - he really added to an already great story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Missing Persons?

There were a lot of moments that genuinely surprised me. Possible vague/minor spoilers here:In most mysteries/thrillers, the plots can feel almost formulaic at times. If a minor character turns up missing, they're dead. If 2 events might be connected, they are. If trace amounts of blood are found, someone was murdered. This book was refreshingly realistic in that sometimes things just randomly happen that might not be part of some complex sinister plot.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. The plot had me hooked from the beginning and didn't seem to have any filler (unnecessary back stories, drawn out descriptions of scenery, etc.)
