    Tedious
I'm seldom disappointed in my Audible selections so this is an exception. The book is very difficult to follow due to the many characters-many of whom are irrelavant to the story. Perhaps it would be easire to follow in hard copy. The author also insertedseveral transition blunders that caused me to lose context for a short time until I figured it out. The theme could be interesting without all the unnecessary chatter.

When the truffle-hunting dog starts to dig furiously, his master's first reaction is delight at the size of the clump the dog has unearthed: at the going rate, this one truffle might be worth several hundred pounds. Then the dirt falls away to reveal not a precious mushroom but the bones and tendons of what is clearly a human hand.
In Not in the Flesh, Chief Inspector Wexford tries to piece together events that took place eleven years earlier, a time when someone was secretly interred in a secluded patch of English countryside. Now Wexford and his team will need to interrogate everyone who lives nearby to see if they can turn up a match for the dead man among the 85 people in this part of England who have disappeared over the past decade. Then, when a second body is discovered nearby, Wexford experiences a feeling that's become a rarity for the veteran policeman: surprise.
As Wexford painstakingly moves to resolve these multiple mysteries, long-buried secrets are brought to daylight, and Ruth Rendell once again proves why she has been hailed as our greatest living mystery writer.

    Predictable bit...
Predictable...but still kept me reading. Reminds me of a part 2 of THE BEAST WITHIN, the movie from the early 70s. Would make a great B horror movie.

This was the first Laymon book I've read, but it won't be the last! It keeps you guessing until the end. Great book!Flesh
    BOOK REVIEW
Book arrived quickly in good condition. I would purchase from this vendor again. Rosemary
    Typical but good
This is one mystery writer who has not run out of ideas. The Wexford books are still good, and not too sensational. Liked it a lot.

From the moment Dortmunder reaches for his first pawn, he faces insurmountable odds. The purloined past of this precious set is destined to confound any strategy he finds on the board. Success is not inevitable with Dortmunder leading the attack, but he's nothing if not persistent, and some gambit or other might just stumble into a winning move.
    Critic Reviews:
"Westlake is a national literary treasure, and his latest effort only enhances his value." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Dufris is a marvel!
Dufris and Westlake - what a pair.
The story is already clever and hilarious, and Dufris' narration ensures it remains as such. The characters are all so clearly defined by a vocal maestro.
I was sorry it ended far too soon.
    I love Dortmunder
Westlake never fails to deliver the goods with the Dortmunder capers. They make us laugh, they do not subject us to gratuitous sex or violence, and no one gets harmed. William Dufris reads "What's So Funny" perfectly, giving unique voices to the five conspirators and the auxiliary characters. Probably it would help to listen to the previous Dortmunder capers in order, in order to appreciate the patterns in these lovable criminals' lives; but "What's So Funny" -- like the other Dortmunder novels -- entertains admirably on its own. If you appreciate humor and gentleness in your crime novels, Westlake's Dortmunder series was made for you.
    Great Book
Westlake was the first author is ever listened to years ago on tape and got me adicted! His Dortmander series is great as well as the work he did under the name Richard Stark.
    OK, But............
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The two steps forward and one step back. I feel like there's nothing to imagine in this book. Just too much is given away. Please just go forward with the story. Don't over explain.
Would you recommend What's So Funny? to your friends? Why or why not?
No, just not something that would be worth mentioning.
What three words best describe William Dufriss voice?
    Find the humor.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    NO!!!!!!!!!

    Nice light read...kind of sappy
The author has a good concept... the main character over thinks himself and the heroine's thoughts make you chuckle. Not bad...
    The Fifth Profession
The story may be wonderful, however, after listening to this dramatized version of the novel I had to turn it off. The narrator's voice was like finger nails on a chalk board and the multiple voices drove me nuts. Too bad - I think I may just read this one..
    Very Odd
The story isn't all that bad but in the hundreds of audiobooks I have listened to I never heard one narrated like this one. There is no narrator listed and it sounds as if computer generated voices were used to narrate this book. The editing is horrible and a credit should not be wasted on this book.

    Would probably avoid
Think 'Manchuarian Candidate' as would be written by Barbara Cartland. Hackneyed, cliched, and not to his usual standard.

Police pathologist Teresa Lupo is Nic's colleague, friend, and his only equal when it comes to breaking the rules to get results, whatever the cost. Now, after years of living with the dead, Teresa insists that her superiors move quickly to save a life. Poring over the body of the girl in the morgue, she has found too many similarities between the girls, including a unique, leering tattoo. Lupo is sure that the vanished girl is headed for a bizarre ancient Bacchanalia involving virgins and sacrificial murder: a ritual that is only days away.
As Nic and Teresa claw at the case from two sides, and as Nic finds himself at once puzzled and beguiled by the missing girl's seductive mother, a chilling picture is beginning to emerge of secret relationships and sexual depravity, organized crime and unimaginable corruption. With the clock ticking down on a young girl's life, Nic and Teresa are about to make the most horrifying discovery of all: in a pit of human darkness, where an age-old malevolence still endures, evil has consumed innocence. And a very modern vengeance has begun.

    Italian accents
Hewson's books are great, but I far prefer the other narrator, the one who read The Sacred Cut and The Seventh Sacrament. This one, in addition to mispronouncing Italian words (which the other guy also did), reads all the dialogues with an Italian accent. This is absurd! Italians do not speak to each other in English with an Italian accent! Obviously they would speak in Italian and without a foreign accent, and since the book is in English, can't we just assume we are reading a translation into English of what they said, and dismiss the silly accents, please? As they stand, the accents are very distracting and make a caricature of what are otherwise excellent dialogues. Do listen anyway, though, because these are great books, engaging at every level and far better written than Dan Brown's.
    con gusto!
Engaging, amusing characters. Plenty of surprises that keep you guessing until the end. A mystery with special pleasures for archaeology buffs and anyone who has ever visited Rome.
If you can get past the cheesy accents
...then this book is a pretty good mystery. Why they chose to do the main characters (all Italian) with REALLY bad Italian accented English is beyond me, maybe because there were one or two English speaking characters?
I do plan to keep up with the series, but will probably read the rest.
What's with the bad Italian accents?!
After starting with, and very much enjoying, the most recent book (The Garden of Evil) in this series, I decided to go back to the begining. The first book was great and so was this one, but the Itallian accents!! Eek. The narrator is actaully pretty good, but the accent he uses for the Italians is not only the same for all characters, but it sounds like Triumph the insult comic dog. Awful!! It was difficult to take the characters seriously. And most annoying was that it was VERY difficult to tell who was speaking when the characters were all Italian. I still recommend the book, but I think a new reader is called for. Be aware of what you are getting when you download this book.
    Silly Accents
Despite the accent which at first makes the characters sound silly,(you get used to it)the story is engaging and the characters interesting. I found this book very entertaining.

" The Echolon Vendata" on steroids.
First thing that captures you is the narrator, hes no Scott Brick but he's close. The book itself is very well written and the characters keep you sitting in your car waiting for the chapter your listening to end. Drama is the calmest, coolest killer since John Rain.
Patriot and Drama must be at 1.25X
Where does Patriot Acts rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Great listen and good writing!
Beware: USE 1.25X speed to listen. Thanks to new downloads, you must listen at this speed to get the fast impact of this great adventure. When other reviews were written, 1x speed killed the story. This is a keeper and so much better than book #2.This was inventive and it had many assassin plans, thoughts and strategy that kept you glued to this listen.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Patriot Acts?
When Patriot and Drama figure out how to make the big villain come out of hiding! WoW, I didn't see that one coming.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Daviss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Well, I am his most devoted fan. I have purchased so many of his reads just because he has recorded the book. He is EXCELLENT in this one. He does female voices very well and still keeps his macho image. My fave Sandra Brown's Mean Streak
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was impressed and fascinated by the author's knowledge of many deeds, and how he explained them in such an entertaining fashion.
I had purchased both #1 & #2, but made the mistake of listening to #2 first at 1x speed. I will now have to re-listen at 1.25X as that makes all the difference to these older recordings. What a supreme difference it makes to the author writing. It makes the story flow as fast as the author intended.
    Any additional comments?
Note: if you have not tried out 1.25X speed, for your mysteries, you will be pleasantly surprised. I have started to re-listen to many of my older books, and this new speed makes them all EXCELLENT to hear again. Enjoy
    whew, what a stinker
I tried this for an hour and a half, the writing is terrible, it goes nowhere and what the heck is the point?
Oh, and switching his AR15 to automatic is not possible without a rebuild either. This book is horse patookie. Save your money/credit.

    Members Reviews:
    A pleasant surprise!
I got this audiobook thinking it was a China Bayles mystery and was disappointed at first when I found out otherwise. But I ended up really enjoying this story -- the story is engaging and well written and imaginative. Give it a try! It will make you smile.
    The Tale of Holly How
This book makes a nice change of pace between more intense content books. When I read the first one in the series, I went and read a bio of Beatrix Potter and found it interesting. This is the second book and I found it delightful. Part of the story is of Potter's daily routine at her farm, the other is the animal stories told in the style of Potter. One feels good after reading this book.
This takes you back to a time.
I love the series. The narrator does an excellent job. Fantastic dialect, right amount of pauses. A delightful mixture of author and story teller.
    Wonderful!
This audio version of the book perfectly captures the essence of the book and allows it to vividly come to life. Very well done.

Daisy Minor is bored. Worse than that, she's boring. A plain, small-town librarian, she's got a wardrobe as sexy as a dictionary and hasn't been on a date in years. She's never even had a lukewarm love affair, let alone a hot one. So when she wakes up on her 34th birthday and wonders how it is that she still lives with her widowed mom and spinster aunt while her friends have all gotten married and started families, she decides it's time to get a life - and a sex life. And as far as she can tell, good girls don't attract nearly as many men as bad ones.
One makeover later, Daisy has transformed herself into a party girl extraordinaire. She's dancing the night away at clubs, and laughing and flirting with men for the first time in, well, forever. With a new lease on her own place, it's open season for manhunting.
But on her way home late one night, Daisy sees something she's not supposed to see. Suddenly the target of a killer, she's forced to put her manhunt on hold.
But the very moment she stops looking might be the moment she finds what she's wanted all along.
    Critic Reviews:
"An enjoyable romantic thriller. Kate Forbes' narration is relaxed and sensual, her Southern accents believable. Male voices are effective, and Forbes easily handles both the bantering and the suspense." (AudioFile)

    Lots Of Fun
I really did enjoy this book. It was funny, entertaining and amusing. Good story too. A great escape and cute characters. For $10 an easy listen you can afford to try. The narrarator always makes it grand.
    Try it!
Fun. Well written. I think you'll really like this selection.
When you need a lift...this is a fun story
I've read this book in hard copy, I've even managed to find an unabridged library copy of the audiobook and yes the abridged version is not as good, but still it'll give you a lift. It's just fun read. If I have a really down day or read something that's heavy, or simply ends sad this book is a great way to perk up your day. For me, Linda Howard is my number one "must read". Open Season is not her best, not her most touching, not her best mystery (since there really isn't any mystery to mention in it) but it has to be something she wrote when she was having a really good day. If you need a lift, Daisy and Jack are good way to start.
    Open Season
I love the way this book was put together for the listener. It had me laughting when you should have been laughting I will enjoy this book for years to come. It is great.
    Fun story
I've always loved Linda Howard's books and this one has been no exception in written form. However, I didn't care for this abridgement and the narrator wasn't good at all. You couldn't distinguish between the characters and her voice lacked emotion. Sadly, though I really liked this book when I read it myself, I did not like this version.

    We need the unabridged version
Good book, excellent action.....however, this is one book that should not have been abridged...it makes the action a little hard to follow. I've requested the book from the library.
    Keep 'Em Coming
Eric Van Lustbader has done well in picking up Robert Ludlum's Bourne series--the only reason I purchased this book. He has been added to my list of favorites authors. I look forward to his next book.
    Total Surprise
I've never read Eric Lustbader before and boy was I surprised. This book was amazing. I couldn't turn it off! The characters were well developed, It wasn't just a rehash of another book. It was great and I'm sure I'll listen to it again!
    The Testament
I sgree with Queene, this book has been abridged to death. I can't beleave Lustbader allowed this to be released. As a fan I was very disapointed in its compleate lack of continuity. I will not buy another abridged version.
    I've read the book
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I have recommend it to friends. It's a good story.
What did you like best about this story?
The secret history that may or may not be true. And the danger behind that history
Would you be willing to try another one of Eric Congers performances?
The reader was good performer. I was entertained. But I had problems with the production of this audiobook. I don't like abridged audiobooks, and if I would have known that this reading was abridged, I wouldn't have gotten this audiobook.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably not. Most movies based on books are disappointing and don't live up to the books they're based on. And as in the Broune series, the movies are great but they have nothing to do with the books.
