When a croupier is murdered on the Choctaw Gambler Riverboat Casino, State Bureau of Investigation Agent Jim Wills invites newspaper reporter Jancy Dewhurst to accompany him to the scene. The dead croupier resembles casino owner Jesse Chase, a former friend and business associate of ranching tycoon Tyrone Gideon. Tyrones son G.C., heir apparent to the Gideon empire, has hired a man to murder Chase. G.C. ran up a debt aboard Gambler, refused to pay, and was banned from the facility. He believes the debt and his humiliation will die with his dads old friend. Following rumors of G.C.'s spending excesses, Jancy visits G.C.s elderly father to ask about their possible impending bankruptcy. Frail and blind, Mr. Gideon is surprised by Jancys revelations. He has given his son a free hand with his assets, but had no idea G.C. had indebted the ranch for millions. A drunken, raging G.C. interrupts Jancy and Tyrone and orders Jancy to leave. Moments later, G.C. batters the old man, then blames Jancy for provoking him. G.C. orders Bubba Valentine, his bodyguard, to kill Jancy for meddling. He describes in detail how the nosy reporter is to die. Struggling with her contradictory desires--to settle in Bishop, Oklahoma, with Jim or to pursue her career as an overseas news correspondent--Jancy doesnt realize shes been targeted for death. She has no idea that her car being run off the road on a rainy afternoon is intentional. The danger finally becomes clear, even to her, however, when a bomb destroys her newly repaired vehicle, killing two kids who had taken it for a joy ride. With Jims assistance, Jancy overcomes one life-threatening dilemma only to find herself mired in yet another.

    A case of murder
This is a romantic suspense novel with the emphasis on romance. Oklahoma reporter Jancy Dewhurst guards her virginity zealously as she clings to her dream of becoming a foreign correspondent.
She tells OBI Agent Jim Wills, "I want to meet royalty and prime ministers and mercenaries and villains. I want to be where things happen. I want to contribute, to be valuable and important." When he replies that she's valuable and important to him, she tells him bluntly, "That isn't enough."
Maybe not, but he's definitely a roadblock on her way to fame and fortune. The author gets right to it in the first chapter, with Wills taking Jancy to a gambling boat where there's been a murder. She tries to control her raging hormones but he's a dish - biceps, shoulders, jawline, suntan, dark eyes, the works.
The Choctaw Gambler is a 4-deck replica of a paddlewheel showboat built on a permanent foundation and rigged so that water runs over the paddlewheel to make it look like it's turning. An itinerant croupier has been shot, possibly by mistake because he resembles casino owner Jesse Chase. A likely suspect is G.C Gideon, former friend and partner who owes the casino a huge debt. Playing both ends against the middle is a thug named Bubba Valentine. He's G.C.'s bodyguard and lifelong friend but handles dirty business for Chase.
While much of the action centers on Jancy's lust for Wills versus her ambition, those scenes are interwoven with crime scenes. Following a tip, Jancy discovers that G.C. has fraudulently mortgaged his father's ranch for more than a million dollars. Shortly thereafter G.C. is murdered.

    LOVE THIS SERIES
I found one of this series at a library book sale and was hooked, and have been buying others through amazon. This one was just as good as the rest, I love this series, the atmosphere, way of life, and the characters are so interesting.....the mysteries are well plotted....and you don't have to read any of them in order, which is a big plus.
    Murder Majorcan Style
Roderic Jeffries is one of my favorite authors. I have read almost all of his Inspector Alvarez books. This Inspector definitely does not go by the book and is a most humane character. Plus the wonderful flavor and love of his homeland. By taking us into his personal, after hours, life, we get to know the real culture and what makes them tick.
    I love the series
I love the series, but this book was EXACTLY the same as another in the series, though I can not remember which one. Not to give away the ending, but I was able to guess it because it was a repeat of a former theme. In that respect it was very disappointing.
    Perfection
Another flawless piece of prose. I "live" for Inspector Alvarez novels!!! Aloha from Hawaii. In a lot of ways the Inspector's laid back ways remind me of Hawaii.

After witnessing a shooting on an L platform - and receiving a phone call from the killer himself - Kelly is drawn toward a murderer with an unnerving link to his own past, to a crime he witnessed as a child, and to the consequences it had on his relationship with his father, a subject Kelly would prefer to leave unexamined. But when his girlfriend - the gorgeous Chicago judge Rachel Swenson - is abducted, Kelly has no choice but to find the killer by excavating his own stormy past.

Not as good as his second Second City novel
Have read all three, and Harvey has a knack for creating characters we care about with only a few strokes. And he uses Chicago well as his setting. Some gripes that keep it from being as good as his previous novels: plot is a bit over-wrought, taking on too many villains. Second, tiresome conceit that the only way to catch bad guys is to operate outside the rule of law, mostly because the police and the Feds are wholly inept or corrupt. Finally, the revolving-door relationships are becoming hackneyed. But Harvey writes well, Kelly is a good character, and Chicago is a great setting.
This Third Thriller Is The Most Exciting Yet!
This third book in the Michael Kelly series is much more exciting (and downright terrifying) than its predecessor in the series,The Fifth Floor: A Michael Kelley Novel (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard). Though my fear, I am sure is compounded by the fact that I started reading this novel on the CTA during a rush hour commute home - the setting for the opening scenes of a violent killing spree. Harvey deviates a bit here from his typical writing style to alternate Kelly's perspective with that of the villain's. This broader scope increases the excitement - and also allows for even more of Harvey's Chicago to shine through. Familiar characters from the previous novels return - from John J. Wilson, the crooked mayor who loves his city to Victor Rodriguez, the noble CPD detective. New faces are introduced as well, and each character comes to life in this fast-paced thriller.
The Chicago Harvey paints here is a terrifying one - as the body count climbs and the plot thickens. This may just be the most exciting entry into the series! The emotional perspective of the narrator continues to deepen and Kelly becomes an even more conflicted and complex character. Harvey has a real for creating twisting, convoluted plots (that still work and unfold without gaps in logic) revolving around flawed, but still sympathetic characters. Mayor Wilson, in particular, becomes a more endearing character with each novel. I may not want to live in Harvey's version of Chicago (especially not in this novel!), but I look forward to seeing where the next installment will go. These are fast, fun and frightening reads!

All of Harvey's books are great and I learned a ton of things about the Chicago area. A fine read for late at night when the cold winds howl!
    gritty crime novel
This is a tough, gritty crime novel set in contemporary Chicago. The hero is a private detective named Michael Kelly, who reminds me of Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer.

You can rely on Fraser for an excellent read ~
Fraser is one of my top ten all time fave authors and that's saying a lot given I've been addicted to British mysteries for more than 40 years.
    Good entertaining book-at-bedtime material
There seem to be more and more female novelists who work with a very simple plot which is set in England and
the characters are married couples with children and grandchildren . The murders are in the Agatha Christie tradition of not going into the graphic detail that would emerge on a post-mortem. What is interesting is that Fraser does not create a character such as Sherlock Holmes or Poirot that comes to the conclusion of the case through deductive methods. Fraser is interested in how a widow has to cope with presenting the new man in her life to the children from her first marriage and how parents behave towards teenage daughters.
Fraser is ideal as a book-at -bedtime writer and I will be getting hold of her more recent novels as I think she has the potential to produce a more gripping plot.

Wonderful narrator of a beautifully written novel
Having read reviews of other narrators reading Reginald Hill novels, I was delighted to see that Warren Clarke narrates some of them.
My delight continued as I started to listen to his voice, sometimes Dalziel, sometimes himself, with a variety of accents for other characters. Clarke does a great Scottish accent!
The quality of the writing is brought to life by Hill, making 'An Advancement of Learning' much more than simply a clever 'whodunnit'.
I shall be buying any Hill audiobook read by Clarke.

She waits for him in the dark, her mind and body perfect, passive, until one day, when he goes to the cellar, and she is gone.
In A Demon in My View, Ruth Rendell creates a character as frightening as he is fascinating. Mild-mannered Arthur Johnson has never known how to talk to women. And his loneliness has perverted his desire for love and respect into a carefully controlled penchant for violence. One floor below him, a scholar finishing his thesis on psychopathic personalities is about to stumble - quite literally - upon one of Arthur's many secrets. Haunting and intelligent, A Demon in My View shows the startling results of this chilling alchemy of two very disparate minds - one pathological and the other obsessed with pathology.

    Awful, stilted and unconvinving
It was impossible to get passed the truelly painful tone and lack of pace of this narrator. Was it a good story? I have no idea. The delivery of this tale was so shockingly bad that it became a jumble of unrelenting annoyance. I'm a great crime thriller fan but this was a real disappointment and I warn others to listen carefully to the sample before purchase. Check that the whining tones of this narrator can be endured for 16 hrs 50 mins! Hard going...no, impossible!

In the dark and slimy streets of Wapping a prostitute is beaten half to death, a not uncommon fate in late 18th century London. So begins this gripping tale set in 1798 in the Port of London. A cruel villain holds sway over the underworld. His name is Boylin. His face is scarred by lime and his back by the two hundred lashes he received following a naval court martial. He holds Captain Tom Pascoe responsible for his suffering. They meet again when Pascoe becomes River Surveyor for the newly formed marine police. They've had orders to investigate a sudden fall in government revenue that is affecting the nation's ability to fight the war against Napoleon and stem the rising tide of Irish rebellion. Pascoe knows that Boylin is behind it, but he can't prove anything, yet. The Watermen follows these two adversaries across London as they try to outwit one another. Working alongside Pascoe is Sam Hart, a Jewish immigrant with his own agenda. Pascoe throws the rule-book out of the window, scouring East London and the docklands in search of information. But fate takes a cruel twist when the two men find themselves involved with the same woman - there's much more at stake than the fate of the nation.

    Very Atmospheric
Really enjoyed this book. Characters were well defined . You get a real feel of the squalor and intrigue of the era. The audio recording was a bit of a disappointment. The male voices were clear but the female/youth voices were too soft therefore I was constantly having to adjust the volume.
good start to an historical crime series.
    Any additional comments?
the two main characters in the story are tom pasoe, a captain of a ship, who has lost his job due to the ship being vandalised and its cargo stolen.. he them becomes a leader in the newly formed river police.
boylin, an irish immigrant, is the villain who hates Pascoe for the punishment he received for wrong doing.
a well written story which brings the 1798 port of London to life, the people the rich the poor and the unwashed. a story based on fact and a few who did exist at that time.
gripping and fast paced a joy to listen to.
recommended if you want something different from the normal in crime stories.
looking forward to the river of fire.
