another fine Seymour novel.

Hardball executive recruiting

Author Gerald Seymour defines CONDITION BLACK as "a lethal assault in progress".

This novel superficially resembles another of Seymour's books, LINE IN THE SAND. In the latter, the Iranians send their master assassin onto English soil to do a wet job. On his trail are representatives from a ragtag bunch of British security and law enforcement agencies, plus an expert Scottish tracker and his dogs. In CONDITION BLACK, the villain is a young English mercenary in Iraq's employ, Colt. He's already killed an Iraqi dissident and his CIA contact in Athens. Now, he's going back to his island home to do another hit - and visit his dying Mum.

There's the usual posse of pursuers and kibitzers: MI6, MI5, Scotland Yard, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Mossad. Chief among them is FBI agent Bill Erlich, out to avenge the murder of his good friend, the CIA agent in Athens. Erlich is young and ambitious. He sees a successful outcome to the chase as a step up the rung of the advancement ladder. To his principle British minder, James Rutherford of MI5, Erlich is "Buffalo Bill", a cowboy with a quick draw mentality.

What could be a simple storyline is made more complex by another task assigned Colt by his Iraqi handlers once he's on home soil. By the way, Colt, how about stopping by Her Majesty's Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston and recruit one of it's scientists to turn traitor and work for the Iraqi nuclear weapons program? Why sure, chief, no problem.

Gerald Seymour is my very favorite creator of spy/conspiracy potboilers. However, I can't quite award five stars for CONDITION BLACK. It seemed the author was overreaching when he assigned two very different roles to Colt. Though not impossible - and what do I know? - it would seem more plausible that assassination and agent recruitment are two very disparate talents not likely resident in a single operative, much less one as unsophisticated as Colt. And the ending was vaguely unsatisfying, though it was consistent with Seymour's first class strength, which is crafting his plots consistent with grubby, unheroic real life, in which the winners and losers are rarely clear cut.

Almost Pulled It Off

I picked the book up because I wanted to see if the author could pull this story off in a believable way. I think he missed the mark, at least with me.

On The Third Day

This book started off with a wonderful premise. It was gripping and exciting - extremely clever and well written ----- and then came the ending. The author had no idea how to end the book. One story line ended in the most STUPID way possible. Another story line was dropped alltogether. The final ending left me totally confused and definitely not wanting more. The first 90% of the novel was great, the last 10% was just ridiculous. Don't waste your time or money.

The reader does a good job

I found this book very disappointing. It sounds so promising - Tom was in Russia in 1919 in the thick of the revolution and is involved in spying of a sort and only just escapes with his life. The story then moves to the French Riviera in 1935 when his days as a spy come back to haunt and threaten him.

One major problem for me was in the characterisation (the book, not the reading). Tom is the handsome, square-jawed hero. His god daughter is of course beautiful and clever and clearly destined to fall in love with Tom despite the age difference. After only a few appearances of her character I am afraid I found her intensely annoying as she was too confident. The other characters are barely drawn at all. The wife of Tom's old colleague from Russia is poisonous to everyone with no real explanation as to why.

There was little tension and the plot twists came along routinely with first one person then another suspected by Tom until they are eliminated from his suspicions sometimes too readily. It's hard to believe he ever worked in intelligence as he is so readily satisfied. There are dark hints of the things he has done while working but they are only hints and he doesn't show any ruthless clear thinking as he is working his way through his dilemmas.

There was little feeling of time. 1935 was quite an interesting time after all but the political background barely gets a look in. Tom himself is an expatriate English man whose circle of friends seem to be other expatriates and there is not enough to place then in the riviera - they could really be anywhere in the world for the story to work.

The reader does his best to bring it to life by trying to inject some tension into it and the various action scenes are well done. The voices are clear and well chosen.

Starts well then fades..........

A rather ordinary book which starts with great promise during the aftermath of the Russian Revolution but then becomes almost a "Boys Own" adventure in the South of France.

Having left the spying business and becoming a travel writer the hero seems to earn lots of money from his books and lives in incredible luxury and gives extravagent gifts to his favourite god-daughter.

Less a thriller than interesting stories about interesting characters

Although crimes are committed and investigations are conducted in Queen of the Night by J.A. Jance, the book is primarily about its characters -- what happened and is happening to them, the ways they are connected or become connected, how events in one charcter's life parallel those in another's.

The story takes place in Arizona, where Brian Fellows, happy in his roles as father, husband, and cop, follows the trail of a killer while his idol Brandon Walker pursues a new lead in a cold case at the request of a dying friend. Brandon's wife, Diana, seeing ghosts and worrying over her deteriorating health, anticipates her own approaching death while at the beginning her life, Angelina Estalante survives a cold-blooded slaughter only to be labeled a Ghost Girl by relatives who refuse to care for the four-year-old. Dr. Lani Walker, one of the Desert People and Brandon and Diana's adopted daughter, knows what it is like to be rejected by family, but her reluctance to make personal commitments influences her empathy for Angelina. Half-Apache border patrolman Dan Pardee, who rescues Angelina and was orphaned at a young age, knows what it is like to be an outsider, particularly in the land of the Tohono O'odham, the Desert People and cannot cast off his feeling of responsibility for the child.

The murders in the book take second place to the lives of these and other characters. The cold case subplot, in fact, is anti-climactic and not terribly engaging. What is engaging are the sections of the book that focus on the legends and traditions of the Tohono O'odam (Desert People), including that of the Queen of the Night, a cereus that blooms only one night a year.

Although Jance's technique of switching focus among characters can be disconcerting, even at times confusing, their stories are interesting enough to make it worth the effort to keep up with and untangle all of the threads.

Great Performance

What made the experience of listening to The Company of Shadows the most enjoyable?

Loved the narrator. Story had unnessary extra spices, but still enjoyable?

I downloaded this over a year ago and the audible file was not working. Waited a year and it works now.

what the hell?

This audio book though riveting is missing the ending.. so DO NOT BUY until they have fixed the problem!!!
