With more substance than a cozy, this was a very good traditional mystery.

First Sentence: My dear Eliza, I promised yesterday that just as soon as I had leisure for writing should send you a full and satisfactory account of Penelope Lambe's accident at Madderstone Abbey; and so I shall begin upon it.

Unconscious after Penelope Lambe falls down stone steps in the ruin of Madderstone Abbey, it is thought she saw the ghost of the Grey Nun. Miss Dido Kent is skeptical and believes the cause was more corporal than spiritual. When a skeleton, identified as Elinor Fenn, governess, is found within a lake being drained on the property, the verdict is self-murder. A friend does not believe Miss Fenn would have committed suicide and, in order to save her being buried in unconsecrated ground, asks Did to investigate.

Beginning with a wonderful opening, I am reminded how much I enjoy the voice of Anna Dean and, therefore, her character Dido Kent. With shades of Jane Austen and her own delightful, wry humor, we are transported back to Georgian England..."I believe that every family which has any claim at all to grandeur should have a ghost. I consider it a kind of necessary which should be attended to as soon as the fortune is made and the country estate purchased." Ms. Dean writes her books in both third person narrative and first person through letters from Dido to her sister. While some may find this annoying, for me it is an interesting and amusing way of conveying relevant information without slowing down the story. It allows us to see both all the events and be privy to Dido thoughts at the same time.

At 36 years old, Dido is considered a spinster yet is anything but shy and retiring. She has a logical mind and approach to solving problems by investigating the clues. The secondary story of her relationship with Mr. Lomax provides an interesting look at relationships and social mores of the time. Mr. Lomax discomfort at Dido discussing "unsuitable" subjects, including the vulnerability of women, and the proprietary of the interactions between them are both delightful and most honest representations I have read.

Ms. Dean has written a mystery of twists and turns, of relationships and unexpected revelations. I was intrigued by some of the history, particularly the doctor trying to determine the cause of asthma. With more substance than a cozy, this was a very good traditional mystery. I anxiously await her fourth book.

Far from his best

I've read as many of Mr Tonkin's books as possible to find locally. This one is a disappointment to me. It starts out fine - then wanders off to writer's block and oblivion. It got really old reading pages of descriptions of what he had to eat then pages and the fancy restaurants and then more pages of "his beloved Bentley" and then - to make things more interesting, some more pages of its replacement. I've gotten used to the technical errors - i.e., a gasoline tank will NOT, when it blows, throw a 6000 pound car several hundred meters. This book almost gives me the feeling that Mr Tonkin is living vicariously through Richard Mariner and he has run out of the "hands on" adventure that made the earlier books so interesting. Go back to basics, stop worrying about word count/payment and write an adventure book that grabs you and makes you want more.

This a novel about a situation that developed during the past decade in which homes were undergoing fore closer at a record rate. This left many people very upset at losing their home but there was also much money to be made by the companies that were contracted to do the fore closing. Mickey Haller defends a fore closed home owner of murdering a banker thought to be involved in her losing her home. Learning that the manager of the fore closing organization is about to be accused of fraud by the banker and there by lose millions of dollars Mickey finds a new motive to have the banker killed. This leads to an exciting court room battle that will find the reader not wanting to put the novel down.

Best One Yet!

Mickey Halley, the Lincoln Lawyer, kind of grows on a reader. I met him through Harry Bosch and I've enjoyed making his acquaintance. This book was the best yet and they were all good leading to this crescendo. Highly recommended reading! Fast paced, full of twists and turns. Great book!

The Fifth Witness-Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly never disappoints. Keep you interested till the very end. A movie of this story would be great. I haven't read a book by this author that I have not enjoyed reading. If someone is new to reading Michael Connelly's characters, they won't be disappointed and I'm sure become another loyal follower.

The first Lincoln lawyer book was great as it was a slight detour from the rest of the works connelly had done up to that time and Mikey Haller was a genuinely interesting/unique character. Unfortunately these subsequent Mickey ballet books have become incrementally less interesting.

Great as always

I don't know what it is about Tony Black, but I keep returning to him whenever I hit a lull with other books. That's not to call his writing a type of "comfort food," because nothing about Gus Dury or any of Black's other series is remotely comfortable. Tony Black's novels consistently paint a revolting picture of Edinburgh that would convince a new reader to cancel any pending vacations to Scotland and to tour the skid row nearest their home instead. The characters needle each other in thick slang and break into internal monologues emphasizing regret, disappointment and contempt for the ambitious. The mysteries that Tony writes about are not fantastical heists of computer data or museum artifacts, nor the murders and ransoms of VIPs; he writes about squalid knife and shotgun killings and abductions that involve the poor and the criminal underclass, and sometimes, a college student or slumming politician. Sexual perversion and simple greed are the usual motivators of the crimes. Cruelty is a given. People with addictions don't get treatment and no one "becomes the change" or does anything to veer away from the pitiful trajectories they set themselves upon decades earlier. The smartest and most sympathetic characters are enablers or needlessly judgmental. The authorities are either on the take or arrogant and self-interested. The only people in his fictional universe with any integrity are a failed journalist, a detective with a stalled career, a former gangster turned barber, and a university student who fancies herself a star journalist but lacks common sense. Mysteries are not solved with "a-ha" moments or via the deductive brilliance of the heroes, but through bribes, beatings, shaming, extortion and deception in the service of a greater good. If all of this is scaring you away, then you can certainly find a paperback at the airport bookshop about a debonair FBI agent who speaks 8 languages and is a master martial artist (do have fun with that). If all of the above has piqued your interest, and you've previously enjoyed the writings of Rankin, Bukowski, Irvine Welsh and even Stuart MacBride, then you do not know what you are missing if you've yet to read Tony Black. I've probably said this in a prior review, but I believe he has hit upon a unique hybrid of gutter UK realism and crime fiction that transcends the "Tartan Noir" label and is a beast of its own. Admittedly, his writing has its ups and downs - some books are better than others, and sometimes he goes off on too many tangents about expensive coffee; he can also drag out the dialogue a bit too much at times.

Creative Plot and Interesting Characters

I came across Bryan Gilmer quite by accident when reviewing "Recommendations" on Amazon. I first read "Kill the Story", and just completed "Felonious Jazz". Both are terrific reads. I have read all of the books by Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Lee Child, Joseph Finder, Harlan Coben, John Connolly, and many others. While Mr. Gilmer is not as polished as these veterans, he has written two excellent books. As for "Felonious Jazz", it has a unique plot of a jazz musician committing a series of crimes, with each crime inspired by a song he is writing (or maybe the other way around). The protagonist, J. Davis Swaine (an investigator for a Raleigh law firm), a cop, and a reporter try to determine the motives behind the crimes and track down "Felonious". There are twists and turns throughout, some expected, some not. The characters are well-drawn, particularly that of Leonard Noblac, the felon.

I'm not into jazz, but this book rocked!

I was surprised at how Felonious Jazz entertained me. The characters are well developed in a nontraditional manner. The good guy has questionable morals; he even wishes he had behaved better. The villain comes across as misunderstood while his actions are despicable and creepy; he has foresight and such a twisted view of the world that I wanted to warn the characters in the book about him before he was able to complete each of his 'tracks.'

Warning: this book may make you rethink how you treat others.

Entertaining read!

If you like crime dramas, you will really enjoy Gilmer's second novel. Felonious Jazz is set in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina and features Jeff Davis Swaine, investigator for a prominent law firm, racing to uncover the truth behind seemingly random crimes that have only one connection - him. Gilmer does an excellent job of character development especially with his hero and his villain. I particularly enjoyed how he made the crimes match the feel of jazz as a musical style.

What is this book about?

Leo and his friend Sean do everything for each other and they have no secrets, but this situation changes,

when Leo witnesses the murder of one of the gang leaders in town. Leo can't talk to anybody, because if he does, Amour, the gang leader and murderer will kill him. At first, Leo is very afraid, but Armour helps Leo's father to get a job, scares off the Bissett Boys, who always beat up Leo, and makes Leo feel that at least Armour trusts him. Leo passes messages between Amour and Nelis, another gang leader, for a deal. Armour says, he wants peace in the town and with this deal, there will be some. But in fact, Armour wants to be the only gang leader in the town. Can Leo stop Armour's bad plan? And will he get Armour and Nelis into prison?

What do I think of it?

I think, the book is very gripping, because there are some things, which you don't expect. Cathy Macphail writes about Leo's inner struggles very well and she also describes the different situations in the book brilliantly.

I really like the book and when you are a fan of crimes and hard life, you should read this book.
