Lazy job

As much as I like the work of Bill Pronzini, I was disappointed by this novel. Readers who are familiar with the books by Pronzini and especially the Nameless Detective stories, will immediately recognize some of the plots. And yes, these plots have been used before (to good effect) in some short stories from CASEFILE, that had Nameless as the detective but one of them is now given to Nameless associate Jake Runyon, another one by Tamara Corbin. The three stories (plus another one that is not very interesting) are not well stitched together, there read better separately. It is a bit of a mixed bag. Still, the stories have a lot of San Francisco atmosphere and are narrated very well by Nick Sullivan. But this is not a novel but a patchwork of earlier published material. I expected more.

This book is perfect for a vacation or anytime you need an escape. Curl up with a touch of romance and a touch of mystery with totally enjoyable characters. A quick read makes this story a great fit for the pool or sitting in front of the fire letting your cares fade away.

Ms Fellowes writes in a friendly accessible voice about a research assistant and her boss who is a member of "Midwest's version of the Kennedy family". I enjoyed their burgeoning relationship as they unlocked the answers to a mystery that has surrounded the family for years.

So, if you want a steak and potato, read Tolstoy, but if you're in the mood for a chocolate souffle, read Fellowes

For Beginning Readers Only

After paying to download to Kindle, I really wanted to like this one. But should have done the "Preview" first. It reads like a book written by a junior college freshman. Great for ESL students, but for those who enjoy books with educated dialogue ofwords more than one syllable, plots that are not banal and characters we won't snicker at, this book is not for you.

I've read enough authors over the years to know their style can change and improve greatly over time. I sincerely wish that for Ms Fellowes.

New author!

After reading the book, When Shadows Fall, by Kate Fellowes, I find myself pleasantly surprised. Kate Fellowes is the author's pen name and she has three titles to date. She resides in the Midwest with her husband and pets.

In this romantic suspense, Gretchen Waller, unemployed, and not by choice, takes a position with upscale John David Honeycutt, after her friend found her the position. As his assistant, he investigates a murder his grandfather supposedly committed two years ago and writes a book of the family's history. Together, at the prestigious Mill Hallow estate, they unravel the mystery and scandal surrounding his family and unlock a passion between them.

I have a few minor criticisms for the book, in which is not intended to reflect badly on the author, but to help in her next book. The story takes place in first person point of view, and I think may have benefited if done in third person. With suspense, it is best to use this tense as you are able to attain different points of view and keep the mystery. The book was not predictable, but due to the tense used, I figured out the murderer long before presented. I also felt the plot moved a bit swiftly. There were a few words used in the dialog that appeared off, as in not typical phrasing we would normally use, such as: drat. Lastly, there was no real conflict between the characters, other than the common squabbles, in which you might find in romantic suspense, to wonder if they characters will end up together through the odds.

In saying that, I found this book to be a fun and pleasurable read.

Not the best, not the worst

I love legal dramas, the Mickey Haller series by Michael Connelly and the Ari Green series by Robert Rotenberg are the best but I also enjoy John Grisham and Scott Turow. This series, according to Booklist, is supposed to "leave Grisham and the gang choking on its dust". It does not.

The story starts off slowly and has some unbelievable and contrived elements, but it did eventually grab my attention and even had a few "driveway moments". However, the courtroom scenes are nowhere near as good Connelly, Rotenberg, Grisham or Turow. (Since Ive read ALL their books, Im looking for another good legal thriller authorbut I havent found him/her yet.). However, I will probably give this author one more chance and read/listen to the next book in the series to see if gets any better.

I also found the writing a bit sexist--it was obviously written for a male rather than female audience, and this was annoying at times.

The narrator did a good job. There were some anomalies, like the fact that Pat, who grew up in NYC, had an Irish accent and Rudy had a Hispanic accent, although he was born in NYC and grew up in Florida--but the different accents did help keep the characters straighteven if they were a bit stereotypical. (I think if I were a Southerner, I would have found the bubba accents offensive.)

All in all, worth listening to, but not the best book of this genre.

A big disappointment

What would have made The Mayor of Lexington Avenue better?

Cut the American football talk. Don't introduce inappropriate soapy melodrama. Cut the teenage life talk.

What could James Sheehan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Maintained the standards of his other books. This book is rubbish. Far too much uninteresting padding.

Marshal Guarnaccia leaves the crime scene

Author Magdalen Nabb died recently, bringing an end to her much appreciated Marshal Guarnaccia Investigation books. I haven't read all of the novels in this Florence-based crime series, but I suspect that "Vita Nuova" was not the best of of the group. For me, a 3 1/2-star effort.

While there is laudable humanity and honesty in the Guarnaccia character, the very measured speed at which the character works and the continual repetition of the dialogue in the text as the Marshal ponders and re-ponders the evidence, slow the story line down to a crawl at times. There are moments when the hero's deliberate obtuseness and slow thinking become frustrating for the reader more used to a diet of razor-sharp and cynical detective stories--of Italian or other settings.

This particular crime novel begins with the brutal murder of a female member of one of Florence's nouveau riche families (not sure what the Italian equivalent is), and leads to some unpleasant revelations about the skin trade and trafficking in women and children. The ugliness spreads as members of the city's political and economic elites are implicated with the slow expansion of Marshal Guarnaccia's investigation in new directions. As is often the case in Italian police procedurals, there is political danger for the honest cop when he or she gets too close to criminal/political relationships and Guarnaccia eventually finds himself in very hot water when one of his own bosses appears to be part of the crimes under investigation.

In the end, the Marshal's good heart and common sense do solve the case and win the reader over. This is close to vindication for the long and winding road to denouement. So a regretful good-bye to the Marshal and even more regret for the loss of author Nabb.

Slow and depressing

I enjoyed many of Nabb's books, and like the way she offers tidbits of Florentine history to anchor her stories to that city. Some of the books are better than others, but this one is a slow, boring read and also depressing. The trafficking in Albanian and Romanian young women, girls and children is hardly an entertainment. The dangerous situation these illegal immigrants find themselves in is the subject of some other Italian police mystery stories, like those of Donna Leon. Clearly, it's a real problem in today's Italy, but it's pretty dark and disturbing.

Entertaining escape from modern detective novels. The characters are well developed and convincing. It's a good thing they don't have to contend with forensics or the flawed heroine would be in strife. Phyllida Nash never disappoints with her performances.

I am an avid reader and love to own my books. Buying used books through Amazon has been a wonderful resource for me. Great price and the books have always been in the condition promised.
