In a cave high in the Alps, a renegade anthropologist discovers a frozen Neanderthal couple with a Homo sapiens baby. Meanwhile, in southern Russia, the U.N. investigation of a mysterious mass grave is cut short. One of the investigators, molecular biologist Kaye Lang, returns home to the U.S. to learn that her theory on human retroviruses has been verified with the discovery of SHEVA, a virus that has slept in our DNA for millions of years and is now waking up. How are these seemingly disparate events connected? Kaye Lang and her colleagues must race against a genetic time bomb to find out.
Darwin's Radio pulses with intelligent speculation, international adventure, and political intrigue as it explores timeless human themes. George Guidall's masterful performance heightens the excitement and keeps you enthralled until the final fascinating word.

"Centered on well-developed, highly believable figures who are working scientists and full-fledged human beings, this fine novel is sure to please anyone who appreciates literate, state-of-the-art SF." (Publishers Weekly)

    Really good science fiction
I really enjoyed this book. In my opinion, there are different kinds of science fiction: the futuristic, usually filled with tons of new gadgets, the war genre, and the biologic type. This is the biologic type and my favorite. The most famous and, probably best representative, is Michael Crichton books. This book comes very close to one of his books but not nearly as well written. However, the premise is compelling: That the Human genome contains the ability to change due to environmental forces in order to allow it survival. This, of course, borders on Lamarkianism but recent discoveries in genetics gives its more credibility. Many people dont accept the premise that the living body is really only a vehicle for the genes and a book like this will turn them off. The book was excellent because it wove together several different controversial themes: the politics of disease, the status of humanity at the present time, xenophobia, the inability of governments to deal effectively with change, human rights and the place in science in government. All these are topics are worthy of a book and, the fact that Bear did so successfully, is to be praised. I disagree with most of the negative reviews and fear that their opinions were shaped by the daunting science explicated during the story in order to provide credibility. I have a high understanding of biology and, myself had to re-listen several times to these sections, in order to fully comprehend the meaning. When I look at the status of our world today, there are times that I would hope for a genetic change to remove the unbelievable hated, conflict negativity that seems to pervade almost every aspect of our lives. In my opinion, if a change doesnt come soon, the homo sapiens branch of the tree of life will end up being a withered jin and another branch will continue to grow.
Don't have to be a biologist to enjoy!
    Any additional comments?
Loved the book! At first, I almost gave up listening, but then decided to put my faith in the author - I was sure he wouldn't tell a story that required the reader to know all about genes, DNA, chromosomes, etc. So I decided to just listen to the story, and pick up the few facts that I could remember or that might be relevant to the story.

Luckily, his "enhanced" life also seems to be a charmed one. A new chance at freedom beckons, courtesy of the government. All Marsalis has to do is use his superior skills to bring in another fugitive. But this one is no common criminal. He's another Thirteen, one who's already shanghaied a space shuttle, butchered its crew, and left a trail of bodies in his wake on a bloody cross-country spree. And like his pursuer, he was bred to fight to the death. Still, there's no question Marsalis will take the job. Though it will draw him deep into violence, treachery, corruption, and painful confrontation with himself, anything is better than remaining a prisoner. The real question is: can he remain sane and alive long enough to succeed?

    "Stellar." (Publishers Weekly)

    WOW, Morgan Does it again!
When I read "Altered Carbon" I said it was the New book by which I would judge all others. Morgan just keeps writing excellent books in the "Used Future", and not just the same books with the same characters (which I actually wouldn't mind seeing with the Takeshi Kovacs series), but different people in different settings in different time periods... he constantly proves he's multi-talented and can write on any level. He writes the way I wish *I* could.
I researched Morgan a bit and found out we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, and I was probably misreading the social commentary written into his work, or maybe not, because as I have said before, "If the Left could accept guns, and the Right could accept drugs, we'd all be closer to the middle than most people think".
"Thirteen", was another of those books that I couldn't put down. "MP3 player in the pocket until it was done", etc... and then I had to reflect on it a few days to let it soak in before writing a review.
The Sex is hardcore, NOT for the Kiddies, but it's not just stuck in there "out of place". I didn't think it detracted from the story any.
I don't know if Morgan actually shoots a lot or not (Probably not, being an academic in the U.K.), or if he just sticks in "people being blown backward by gun shots" because people expect it due to TV (I suspect this is the case)... "Stopping power" is a myth (do the math, F=MA) except with artillery shells and the like, and Morgan knows that a table won't stop bullets (on TV people can hide behind cardboard boxes safely), but then he talks about people being blown out doors and windows from being hit by a slug. Still, minor technicalities aside (for whatever reason they are in the book) it's an EXCELLENT book.
I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because it wasn't quite "Altered Carbon", however it was better than Market Forces, IMHO.
    Excellent
When I think about this novel, I keep wanting to describe it as an "adult" book. Not in the sex/violence way that most people think of when they hear "adult", but more as a grown-up book with grown-up themes. There is sex and violence in the book, but they're not what the book is about. It's about the characters, and the society they live in. It's not always pretty, but neither is real life.

This riveting adventure swings you from one wonderous realm to another as the Hidden Empire is sought after and exposed. Anderson has created a gripping beginning to what will surely be his best series yet. George Guidall has returned a stellar performance and brought these characters to life in vivid detail.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this stellar launch of a new series, bestseller Anderson...delivers action, engaging characters, and credible fantastic worlds." (Publishers Weekly)
"Full of battles, chases, and hairbreadth escapes...this is also an intelligently conceived and executed nailbiter." (Booklist)
"Anderson's skill in delivering taut action scenes and creating well-rounded human and alien characters adds depth and variety to a series opener that belongs in most sf collections." (Library Journal)

    Great Listen
For the most part I am not a huge fan of Science Fiction. This book may change that. First I will say that the narrator will convince you that he is actually multiple people. With enough accents and voice changes you will be convinced that he is actually they.
The book starts a little slow. For the most part you have no idea what is going on and how everything plays out. Be patient! It is well worth the time and effort. The character development is what makes this a slow beginning, but once you begin to understand the characters you will be hooked, line and sinker. By the end of the book you will be disappointed that it ends.
    Pretty good series.
Let me warn you in advance, this is a long, 7-book series, and while the narrator for this and the next two books is great, he's replaced in books 4-7 with someone not as good - who seems to have not listened to the first 3 before getting started - I know this can be a deal-breaker for some...
That said, this is a pretty cool sci-fi series that sorta has the feel of an epic fantasy series. Humans in space, with discovered technology they have no business messing with, inadvertently start a war with a powerful alien race they didn't know existed... There are some cool ideas, interesting aliens, fun space battles, multiple (though not unpredictable) plot lines, and a big universe with a lot of characters. You could argue that maybe 7 books was a bit of a stretch, but it's not like I'm short on time - and the series stayed interesting throughout. One other reviewer hit the nail on the head though when he suggested the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons would be a better choice for someone looking for something similar, but better. But once you're done with that, this one is pretty good too.
Audible really needs to allow us to give half stars. Story would get 3.5 from me.
Slow start but the sequels are worth it
I actually just finished the 3rd book in the series, and I am rating this one higher than I normally would only because of the sequels.

If you read the book first you will be fine
I have every Battletech book written. I like the universe that has been created. I was very excited to see Audible had a great Battletech series for download. I do however like unabridged stories. I was happy with the narrator, he did a fine job, I was also happy with the production, some sound effects and scene dividing music.
I however was not happy with the way they chopped the story. In my view they left out parts of the story that would be critical to explain the motivations of the characters. They also did not try to explain how the mechs worked, or even really what Mechs were.
I would be very interested to see hat a person new to the story, storyline would have to say. If Audible could get the Battletech stories unabridged I would buy them all. IF youare looking for a short piece to listen to, that does not require a lot of thought by all means get this audio book, but do yourself a favour if you like it... go buy the print edition and read that.
Incomprehensible if not a Battletech veteran
    synaubrey: You get your wish.
I've never read any of the Battletech series. I grabbed this selection (the collection) because Defiance Audio was the producer and I loved what they'd done with the Deathstalker series. I'm a serious audio-book "reader" (I used to work in the industry); I own well over 500 and have read far more, around 2-4 per week. With that having been said, I'm REALLY disappointed.
The narrator is decent, the production is quality, but the plot is so severely abridged that it doesn't make an ounce of sense. Think in terms of the way the later Harry Potters and Eragon translated into movies: no exposition, rising action, denouement. Just action sequence after action sequence with nothing tying them together, no back-story, no character development, nothing. I've no doubt that they hit every major plot point in the book, but they don't relate them to anything, even each other.
Further, I can't help but believe that this is not the first book or story-arc in the series, so what little plot is exposed appears to simply pre-suppose the reader already knows what's going on. I'm a little over an hour in, I haven't the foggiest clue what anyone's motivations are, why characters are being beaten up for their professions, why these big power-armors are blowing one another up in asteroid fields, why it's significant that Character A is in a wheelchair or that Character B is joining some "Prince's Guard" (or even what said guard IS).
I give up. This abridging editor should be shot.

Ok, but jumps around a lot.
After listening to the Death Stalker series, I thought I'd try the Battle Tech ones. As a fan of the RPG system, I found the stories interesting but it did tend to jump around a lot and I kept loosing track of where I was. It seems like these stories are abridged so maybe that is the reason for the problem.

    Excellant audio effects
The voices and audio effects were excellant. My only complaint is that these are abridged, and I felt that some of the things that were taken out of the books could leave people new to the series a little confused. For example, the complete absence of Takasi Kurita form the books, and some of the scenes that I felt really added to the enmity between Phelan and Vlad.
    The Clans first invasion
Very nice intro into the first attack of the clans into the inner sphere. Because this book covers almost all of known space there are a lot of players to keep track of. The voice acting is well done but the extra sounds and effects were a bit much. If you are interested in Battletech or would just like a fun romp into a new Universe take a listen!
    Batteltech Collection 1

    Excelent story, poor audio effects
Where does Battletech Collection I rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Its ok.
What did you like best about this story?
It is a pretty funny action story, fast paced and full of giant robot mechs. Whats not to like.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was excelent, but the audio effects distracted me. At some points it were laud enough to drown the narrator. The book is able to stand on its own, and dos not need fake laser sounds.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I like it. A good escapist fiction story with giant mechs.
    Any additional comments?
Unfortunatly its abreviated. A full version would be excelent. And without the horrible audio effects.

He's watched the dead inexplicably return to life before his very eyes. He's lost many people near and dear to him, most dying unfathomably horrible deaths at the hands of the dead who have seemingly overnight taken over the big metropolis - their numbers and hunger for human flesh growing exponentially with each passing hour.
After having been forced to kill his reanimated neighbors in self-defense and then surviving the perilous overland journey from his home in Portland, Oregon, Cade finds temporary refuge inside the wire of a Special Forces garrison on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah.
But his stay is short and he decides to strike out alone, resuming the search for his missing wife, Brook, and 11-year-old daughter, Raven, the only way he knows how - with a laser-like focus and full speed ahead.
So in the early morning hours on day four of what might be the United States and perhaps the entire globe's extinction-level event, he slips out Camp Williams' back gate riding a specially modified off-road motorcycle.
Armed and resupplied and with only a satellite phone connecting him to the crumbling world, Cade soldiers on eastbound - locked and loaded - with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, his small family's last known whereabouts, dead set in his sights.
Meanwhile, 400 miles away in Colorado Springs, Colorado - the new capital of the United States, President-by-succession Valerie Clay works round the clock with what's left of the military to gather together the resources and scientific know-how necessary to stop the Omega Virus' rapid spread and, starting with Colorado Springs, rid the country of the multitudes of walking dead.
Will the 1900 miles and the millions of dead in Cade's path succeed in keeping him separated from his family?
Will mankind find a foothold against the dead and turn the tide of war?
Cade Grayson, locked and loaded, is determined to find out.

    Main character is a jerk?
This is better than the first book. The women are getting some spunk and are much more realistic, and there are many new and interesting characters that are fleshing out well. One big butt - and that is the main character Cade. First, dumb annoying name. Second, he's a jerk. One character in particular seems to bring on his wrath and his crime? Being fat and a civilian. I'm former military and from a military family and I don't know a single soldier that thinks about civilians so negatively. Particularly special forces guys - they die and kill so that civilians can BE civilians. They stand between the worst the world (and undead ;) have to offer and the civilians they protect. I don't know any who would be so resentful and nasty just because a civilian acted like a civilian - scared s***less, confused, and not in top physical shape. Cade is just a mean jerk and not a good soldier. Other than that, good addition to the series.
a story of survival against all odds
Cade Grayson is a former Delta Force (Special Ops) soldier who is thrown into the middle of a zombie apocalypse when the Omega virus is unleashed on the human population.

Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence, and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind - when Freeman's people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as "Master". They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war.
    And lost.
Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population. Those infected change - they are propelled to violence, driven to disperse the virus. Uniquely suited to respond to this new threat, Freeman searches for a cure, but instead finds the source - the Masters, intent on reclaiming the world. Freeman must fight for his life, for his friends and for the truth, which is far more complex and dangerous than he ever imagined.

What about R. C. Brays performance did you like?
i have listened to r.c. bray a few times now, and he is becoming one of my favorite narrators. he gives each character their own unique voice. he is easy to listen to, and his narration draws you into the story.
    Any additional comments?
robots and zombies!?! WTF...i thought! it's not normally a combination i'd consider even though i like them individually. BUT before you make a funny face and utter a derogatory remark, let me stop you there. this is a good zombie story, AND it is a great robot story.
great blend of characters. i found all of the characters interesting, unique, well drawn out, and needed. each character is an important building block of the world the author creates.
xom-b has all of the hallmarks of a good story, but i can't say too much b/c i don't want too spoil your listening experience.
i can usually predict how a story will unfold so i get excited when i'm surprised by a really good twist. there are breadcrumbs interspersed throughout the story, and what they finally lead to, i can honestly say i didn't see it coming.
overall, a good addition to your zombie library. if you're a fan of the zombie genre, this is a no-brainer- get it! but if you're not really into zombies, but you are into sci-fi, definitely give it a try b/c it's a good sci-fi book with a unique twist, and that twist be zombies! it's more AND better than you think!
NOTE: the story is a little slow in the beginning, but please give it a chance. it is well worth it!
NOTE 2: please nobody give away the twist of the story. you'll definitely earn my ire! thanks in advance!
THE WORLD IS NOT THE PLACE I BELIEVED IT TO BE
I AM GOING TO DIE, OF THAT I HAVE NO DOUBT.
Every other chapter the main character thinks he is going to die. This is original, but it is not presented well and it is not worth your credit. It may be considered YA, but that is not an excuse to write boring stuff. I held on for a long time, thinking it would get better, but it got worse. You want Zombies listen to Maberry's 'Patient Zero".

    Great but has some quirks.
    Any additional comments?
Good book but fake "bad words" were over used. I read a post talking about this issue but dismissed it as whineing. When the Marines were talking or yelling you would hear "Holy gunk!" and a couple other words over and over. Marines while deployed may use foul language. Get used to it. If real words can't be used then I understand. Bottom line, omit false words or use real ones.
    very good
What made the experience of listening to Vorpal Blade the most enjoyable?
I just enjoy the John Ringo can hold and develop a story line and the characters in the story. His books come to life when you read/listen to them.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Vorpal Blade?
I really can not select any one most memorable moment of the book. t was caught up from the very beginning, and could not put it down the first listen.
Which character as performed by L. J. Ganser was your favorite?
    They were all good.
    Any additional comments?
great listen, excellent writer and good narrator.

I've always enjoyed this novel, and I found that
the narrating served it well. Looking forward to hearing the rest.
the narrator, LJ Ganser, did an excellent job with rendering voices that were unique for each character.
    Hamsters on Dragonflies.
More science than I'm comfortable with but a good story. worth the time to listen.
    Awesome
Loved it. Sci-fi at it's best. The narrator did a great job. Timing voice inflection he does it all . I truly recommend this audio book .

    Publisher's Summary:
The war with the Arduans - profoundly alien invaders who originally arrived in STL ships - is over. Most of those attackers are now probationary (and very productive) citizens of the Rim Federation.
However, many among the Arduans' warrior caste have accepted neither defeat nor the personhood of any of the other intelligence races. Their leader, the ruthless admiral of the second Arduan exodus, Amunsit, is in firm control of the Zarzuela system. Along with a fifth column among the peaceable Arduans, she hopes to find allies in subsequent refugee fleets that abandoned their race's now-dead home system long ago.
But as the victors' diplomats attempt to soothe tensions with these warlike neighbors, two heroes of the last war - veteran admiral Ian Trevayne and young troubleshooter Ossian Wethermere - suspect they have stumbled upon a deeper Arduan plot: one that could shatter the Pan-Sentient Union and perhaps interstellar civilization itself.

    What happened to the writing!?!??
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
There are I think, for science fiction fans, certain things about physics one can lie about, and some things one just can't. The writer in this one crossed the line. Sure, get fancy with quantum physics, but standard old Einsteinian and Newtonian physics, nope, sorry you just can't make things up. For instance , a fist sized object moving at 90% light speed hitting an ocean is not going to cause very much problem for a world. It certainly is not going wipe most of a population out. Just in case your wondering, that' about 10Mt worth of bang. So why am I making a point of this.... when I hear something completely wrong technically, I loose my suspension of disbelief, and can't stay in the story. And THAT is what a writer is supposed to be doing. painting a rich tapestry that I can get embroiled in and care about. Nearly every battle in this book got derailed because of some glaring technical inaccuracy.
I still can recommend the book because the over all pot is good, but the technical storytelling in this one is awful!
Would you be willing to try another book from Steve White and Charles E. Gannon ? Why or why not?
I will be listening to the next book if for not other reason that this one was a cliff hanger ending, and I want to know what happens.
Which character as performed by Marc Vietor was your favorite?
Marc does an excellent job narrating the characters in the book. He gets a lot of exercise with this one as there are a LOT of characters in this one!
Could you see Imperative being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I can't see making this book in the series in to a movie or even a TV show, unless it was going to be some schlock done by the SciFi channel. Too much technically wrong.
    Any additional comments?
I hope some one can get back to the Author on this one about the tech details going too far astray. The rest of the series has been great! And I highly recommend books 1-6.
hurry up and write the other book
great book really enjoyed reading it please let the author know to hurry up and write the next one because he literally left his on a major cliffhanger
    Improved over the last book!
For the first several chapters it seemed like a repeat of the last two books.
