    This guy is just phenomenal!
I read this book out of sequence - the last - because I didn't have it.
And it stands on its own.
Imaginative but based on real science. It takes it beyond into science fiction,
but the planetary and physical science of "what if" is what you see on Discovery and Science channels every day.
    Superb!
Great Story with one BIG Problem
If you could sum up 2061: Odyssey Three in three words, what would they be?
    Where is 2010?
    Any additional comments?
It is a great Series, but it really leaves a great big Gaping hole when you leave out the second book of the series! I find that to be a shame. It leaves so many un-answered questions when you go on to the third book in series! How can you do that? This makes for a very big disappointment...
    My favorite Odyssey
If you could sum up 2061: Odyssey Three in three words, what would they be?
I really enjoyed Odyssey three, with Heywood Floyd being one of my favorite characters from 2010. Having a chance to follow him on another adventure was a real pleasure.
Did Scott Brick do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Scott Brick is a hard narrator for me to follow. His reading style, in all the books he has read, always have this beaten-down-give-up-on-life tone to them.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Hmm. It is such a good story that even Scott Brick's depressive, sigh infused tone, can't bring it down.
    Each one keeps getting better!
Where does 2061: Odyssey Three rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Not the best, but certainly high up there.
What did you like best about this story?
    The ending.
What about Scott Bricks performance did you like?
    Steady flow and passionate reading.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Europa Rising
    Any additional comments?
Dick Hill would have been a better reader for this, based on 2001: A Space Odyssey
    Perfectly OK
"2061" is a perfectly decent space thriller. The trouble is, one expects more than that. After all, it's a sequel to "2001" and "2010", two of the most brilliant and mind-expanding classics of epic sci-fi ever written. As a result, it feels a lot flatter and more disappointing than it should. The best way to experience it is to forget about its illustrious forbears and just enjoy it as a mildly diverting space thriller.
It has the usual Clarke failings: cardboard characters and clunky exposition. And this is an old man's novel; it's mostly about amiable old codgers puttering around and dispensing wry comments. Even when the action starts, every character responds to terrifying situations with wry humour, which gets a bit irksome after a while. Everyone's. So. Damn.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Rise up while you can." (Georgia Mason)
The year was 2014. It was the year we cured cancer, the year we cured the common cold, and the year the dead started to walk. It was the year of the Rising.
The year was 2039. The world didn't end when the zombies came, it just got worse. Georgia and Shaun Mason set out on the biggest story of their generation. They uncovered the biggest conspiracy since the Rising and realized that to tell the truth, sacrifices have to be made.
Now, the year is 2041, and the investigation that began with the election of President Ryman is much bigger than anyone had assumed. With too much left to do and not much time left to do it in, the surviving staff of After the End Times must face mad scientists, zombie bears, rogue government agencies - and if there's one thing they know is true in post-zombie America, it's this:
    Things can always get worse.
Blackout is the conclusion to the epic trilogy that began in the Hugo-nominated Feed and the sequel, Deadline.

    Zombie. Grizzly. Bear.
    Warning: BIG FAT SPOILERS!
Okay, I actually saw that coming, but I'm still kinda surprised she actually went there.
So, if you have read the first two books in Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy, you know that Georgia Mason died at the end of book one, and was brought back to life (as a clone) at the end of book two.
I'm not a big fan of "cheats" like this. Throughout the second book, Grant coped with having killed off one of her main characters in the first book by making Shaun "crazy," so Georgia becomes a permanent presence in his head, thus allowing the living main character to have conversations with his dead sister.
This continues in book three, even past the point where Shaun finally finds out about the cloned Georgia. I was expecting there to be some additional sort of "twist" to explain how the Georgia in Shaun's head could be telling him things Shaun didn't himself actually know. But nope, it was just crazy.
The Newsflesh trilogy, supposedly a zombie post-apocalypse series, aspires to be a political allegory as well. The "real" story is that in the wake of the unleashing of the Kellis-Amberlee virus, which causes the newly-dead to rise up again as viral-animated cannibalistic infection vectors, American society has responded to this terrifying change in the status quo by accepting a "new normal" that includes blood tests at every door, elevator, and vehicle, shoot-to-kill orders, safety protocols that make walking out in the open or doing pretty much anything but huddling within fortified enclaves unthinkable, and of course, listening to a government-coopted news media lie about everything.
Sound like Mira Grant might have an agenda here?
The point is pressed home hard in the concluding volume, in which Shaun and George and their surviving newsies find themselves on the run, working with mad scientists and crazy hackers with crazier gun moll sidekicks, swearing to unleash vengeance and The Truth. And they also kill a zombie bear. A ZOMBIE GRIZZLY BEAR!
Like the first two books, it's fast-paced adventure from start to finish.

Great Story, Wonderful Listening, But the Editor?
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely recommend this book. Greg Bear does the best job of bringing hard science into speculative fiction of anyone I know. The story never subsumes the science, nor the science the story. VERY satisfying to the head and the heart.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Very satisfying.
What does Stephen Bel Davies bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The last third of the book is loaded with stuff that would not have changed the story at all if it hadn't been there. Sorry, Greg. If it hadn't been for Stephen's excellent reading, I wouldn't have stuck with it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I wonder if this book could have gotten published these days. Every story now seems so addicted to "it all works out in the end" that true tragedy isn't really dealt with. I really liked the fact that Greg Bear acknowledged that sometimes the worst case happens. He has a silver lining, all right, but it doesn't eclipse the catastrophe of the event.
    Any additional comments?
Honestly, the last third of the novel was full of things that covered in 20 pages what could have been covered in one. Perhaps when one is Greg Bear, editors are (or were) reluctant to intervene. In any event, one of the advantages of having a good narrator is that his energy can carry you through the slow spots. And I really appreciate that, because the last pages of the story were really worth getting to. I would certainly buy another Greg Bear book, as I've done in the past, and will certainly look for anything narrated by Stephen Bel Davies. Hurrah and thanks to you both. A great yarn.
    Amazing!
Thank you audible. I have been waiting years for the audible version of this novel, and am not disappointed. In my opnion this is Bear's best work. A perfect balance of science and drama, with very compelling characters. It builds slowly but brilliantly to its inevitable, terrifying, and heart breaking climax. Though it is bleak in some ways, and frightening, there is the ever present flicker of hope throughout. It is thoughtful, intelligent and haunting... A science fiction classic.
    Great Narration
If you could sum up The Forge of God in three words, what would they be?
The narrator is really engaging; he completely brings the story alive. With most books it takes me a little while to get into the story, and this one was no different. But after about 30 minutes or so I was hooked. Very entertaining.
    Word count achieved.
Not every object requires 4 adjectives to describe it. Written like a teenager writing a term paper, trying desperately to meet the required word count. Not a bad story, just overly flowery in its description.

Inside the deep recesses of the stone lies Thistledown: the remnants of a human society, versed in English, Russian and Chinese. The artifacts of this familiar people foretell a great Death caused by the ravages of war, but the government and scientists are unable to decide how to use this knowledge. Deeper still within the stone is the Way. For some the Way means salvation from death, for others it is a parallel world where loved ones live again. Am Epic Original SciFi Read Worth Your Time...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'm cautious as to what I recommend, because recommendations in anything defines us in those with whom we associate. With that in mind, I only recommend audiobooks/book that captivate me, that are truly original in scope and idea. No middle ground. No gray area. In this case, I'd recommend this audiobook to anyone, ESPECIALLY my friends. Eon brings together alternate dimensions, aliens, Armageddon, warfare, character conflict and culture clash together brilliantly. AND it's a series??? Most excellent.
What did you like best about this story?
It grows almost exponentially as you read it. Once you HAVE read it, you'll know exactly whatI mean. The scope and ramifications of the story reach out further and consequences become more severe and dramatic as the story unfolds. This ALWAYS makes for a good story, and remember, it's ALL about the story. And NO, I'm NOT giving anything away.
What three words best describe Stefan Rudnickis performance?
    Clear, pace-setting, restrained.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
SO many moments in this read stood out, but one in particular was when Lanier is simply overwhelmed by the sheer scope, the magnitude, of the technological capabilities of the Stone's inhabitants and societies. The technology borders on seeming magical at certain points, because of the almost limitless scope of what can be done by everyday people in this society. Imagine what a Neanderthal would think of a microwave, a television, running water, or photography. WOW. How's that for a descriptive word of what you'll encounter as you read this for yourself? You'll discover what they discover, and you'll enjoy the journey.
    Any additional comments?
Any review I write in this depth or greater is due to PASSION. You'll see that the books, authors, and narrators I dislike will have short to the point epitaph-style reviews. Not this audiobook. I cannot recommend it enough. This book will require you to think. Yes, that's right, I wrote THINK. It doesn't mean that you will not understand this book. It's easy to understand. What you'll have to think about are ideals. Things like politics, societal norms erased, eternity, religion, the human condition. Wait, wait, wait...It's a great, fun read, and not lofty, so rest easy. Enjoy the book. Find others who have read it, and have fun tearing ideals apart.

    Publisher's Summary:
From New York Times best-selling author Bob Mayer writing as Robert Doherty: Now we know what the government hid there. It's time we found out why....
Hidden deep in the Amazon rain forest is a place shrouded in mystery. It is called The Mission. And in nearby villages people are screaming in pain as they die from a virus more deadly than Ebola. They can't escape it. They can't cure it. They can't stop it from exploding into a worldwide epidemic poised to kill us all....
Scientist Lisa Duncan and Special Forces Officer Mike Turcotte suspect this new "Black Death" is actually a biological weapon in an escalating war between us...and "them".
Them? The aliens who are part of a chilling conspiracy connected to ancient riddles, a covert government agency...and Area 51. Now from the Great Wall of China to a top-secret facility beneath Antarctica's ice cap, an eclectic group of soldiers and scholars are working with Duncan and Turcotte to give humankind one last shimmering hope to survive. To stop the aliens - at least until the Pandora's box of Area 51 opens up again....
    Critic Reviews:
"This third volume in Doherty's ongoing chronicle of human-alien clandestine warfare should appeal to fans of UFOs, conspiracy theories, and 'ancient astronauts'." (
    Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Getting better with both narration and suspense
The author has improved the tightness of the story and improved the writing style.
I can't believe am listening to the 3rd book. Its actually good.
Narration has improved, although not upto standards set by Ray Porter.
Sometimes find it difficult to differentiate characters since same type of narration and accent is used.
The story is now complex and contains more depth.
    Well done.
    Are we done, yet?
This series, which began with such promise in Area 51, has become rather long in the alien's tooth. This is mindless fiction, of course, but the story is difficult to follow, and then you realize, why bother? The various good and bad aliens and their earth bound allies and clones have just become tedious.
    Too many antagonists
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
We'll, it wasn't for me so I probably wouldn't recommend it. Too confusing to follow.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    I couldn't get that far.
What does Jeffrey Kafer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He does a very good job and is enjoyable to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
I loved the first two books but this one was so confusing that I couldn't keep track of who were the "good guys" and who were the "bad guys'. And then he brought in the religious cult and that was the end of my desire to listen to it. I can't help but think that the author should have made the second book the ending to the series. This one isn't enjoyable because it is too complicated and not really much fun to listen to.
    waiting for war..
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to a friend. It is interesting to learn about the two sets of aliens and the history. I still feel a bit confused not knowing which are good or bad and supposed to be protecting the human race.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In this wry take on the post-apocalyptic horror novel, a pandemic has devastated the planet. The plague has sorted humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead.
Now the plague is receding, and Americans are busy rebuilding civilization under orders from the provisional government based in Buffalo. Their top mission: the resettlement of Manhattan. Armed forces have successfully reclaimed the island south of Canal Street - aka Zone One - but pockets of plague-ridden squatters remain. While the army has eliminated the most dangerous of the infected, teams of civilian volunteers are tasked with clearing out a more innocuous variety - the malfunctioning stragglers, who exist in a catatonic state, transfixed by their former lives.
Mark Spitz is a member of one of the civilian teams working in lower Manhattan. Alternating between flashbacks of Spitzs desperate fight for survival during the worst of the outbreak and his present narrative, the novel unfolds over three surreal days, as it depicts the mundane mission of straggler removal, the rigors of Post-Apocalyptic Stress Disorder, and the impossible job of coming to grips with the fallen world.
And then things start to go wrong.
Both spine chilling and playfully cerebral, Zone One brilliantly subverts the genres conventions and deconstructs the zombie myth for the twenty-first century.
    Critic Reviews:
"A satirist so playful that you often don't even feel his scalpel, Whitehead toys with the shards of contemporary culture with an infectious glee. Here he upends the tropes of the zombie story in the canyons of lower Manhattan. Horror has rarely been so unsettling, and never so grimly funny." (The Daily Beast)
"Highbrow novelist Colson Whitehead plunges into the unstoppable zombie genre in this subtle meditation on loss and love in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, which has become the city that never dies." (USA Today)
"For-real literary - gory, lyrical, human, precise." (GQ)
    Members Reviews:
    Tomorrow needs a marketing rollout.
Everything they say about this book is true. It is slow, confusing, and lacking action...AND it is funny as hell and breathtakingly beautiful.
I don't want to get into a "literary fiction" vs. "mass market fiction" argument here. This book is just not going to do it for a lot of people, and it has nothing to do with education, intelligence, status, etc.
I was almost one of those people. I have a Master's degree in English Lit., but I gave up most serious literature years ago for good, pulpy fun. I spent much of the first two hours listening to Zone One while secretly composing in my head a scathing review about how dull and pointless it seemed.
Then something happened. I got it. I went back to the beginning and listened again. When I got to the end, I went back to the middle for yet another go.
What I found was a moving story, excellent character development, sharply written lines (like the one I used for my headline above), some social commentary (though perhaps a bit obvious...yes, we know, modern folk DO act like the walking dead much of the time), and a different way of looking at the zombie apocalypse.
So I loved it, but you may not.

    Publisher's Summary:
Stephanie Harrington had always expected to be a forest ranger on her homeworld of Meyerdahl until her parents relocated to the frontier planet of Sphinx in the far distant Star Kingdom of Manticore. It should have been the perfect new home - a virgin wilderness full of new species of every sort, just waiting to be discovered. But Sphinx is a far more dangerous place than ultra-civilized Meyerdahl, and Stephanie's explorations come to a sudden halt when her parents lay down the law: no trips into the bush without adult supervision!
Yet Stephanie is a young woman determined to make discoveries, and the biggest one of all awaits her: an intelligent alien species. The forest-dwelling treecats are small, cute, smart, and have a pronounced taste for celery. And they are also very, very deadly when they or their friends are threatened - as Stephanie discovers when she comes face-to-face with Sphinx's most lethal predator after a hang-gliding accident.
But her discoveries are only beginning, for the treecats are also telepathic and able to bond with certain humans, and Stephanie's find - and her first-of-its kind bond with the treecat Climbs Quickly - land both of them in a fresh torrent of danger. Galactic-sized wealth is at stake, and Stephanie and the treecats are squarely in the path of highly placed enemies determined to make sure the planet Sphinx remains entirely in human hands, even if that means the extermination of another thinking species.
Unfortunately for those enemies, the treecats have saved Stephanie Harrington's life. She owes them - and Stephanie is a young woman who stands by her friends. Which means things are about to get very interesting on Sphinx.

    Wow, Weber hits the target.
I love strong female characters, and I've been in and out of the Honor Harrington books for ages. They are good, but I've always been left a bit ho-hum.
Something drew me towards this one, as I've always been interested in the back story of the tree-cats joining with the humans outlined in honor harrington, but without exposition.
This tale is as powerful and as emotive as, "The Host," by Stephenie Merry. Another story that shook me to my roots.
The beauty of the relationship between the tree-cat and the two leg, balanced against the risks of surviving on such a dangerous fantasy science-fiction world is a thrilling, wonderful ride. I listen a lot when I'm walking for exercise, one day I was so engrossed I did two extra (1 mile) laps:)
Khristine Hvam doesn't get in the way of the narrative, and just tells the story. As a result, the listener is focused on the drama, not the voice. In my book, that's a perfect reading.

    Publisher's Summary:
Maureen Johnson, the somewhat irregular mother of Lazarus Long, wakes up in bed with a man and a cat. The cat is Pixel, well-known to fans of the New York Times best seller The Cat Who Walks through Walls. The man is a stranger to her, and besides that, he is dead.
So begins Robert A. Heinleins To Sail Beyond the Sunset. Filled with the masters most beloved characters, this compelling work broadens and enriches his epic vision of time and space, life and death, love and desire. It is also an autobiographical masterpieceand a wondrous return to the alternate universes that all Heinlein fans have come to know and love.
    Critic Reviews:

    Newsday)
    Members Reviews:
Do not make this your first Heinlein!
This book is the culmination of Heinlein's Future History series, unifying his earliest published works with his Lazarus Long novels. As the full title suggest, the book tells the story of Maureen Johnson, mother of Lazarus Long, from her youth in the late 19th century to her old age in one of the alternate future that Heinlein created for the stories he wrote in the 1940s.
Unfortunately, it's also one of his weakest. Heinlein is controversial for his depiction of what strong female characters should be, and in "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" he pulls out all the stops. There are sex-positive polyamorous women; I've met a few. But none of them are like how Maureen Johnson is depicted: not only accepting incest, but actively promoting it among her own children.
Frankly, there were points while I listened that I was embarrassed for the reader, Bernadette Dunne. She's the best female audiobook reader I've heard (I hope it isn't sexist to say so). However I cringed every time I heard her read Maureen Johnson's opinions of what it means to be a woman, on the character's desires for her father, and (what was probably worst of all) how raising 17 children was merely an exercise in household management. Dunne reads all of this in the tone of the character, but I couldn't help but think about Dunne's internal reaction as she did a professional job as an audiobook reader.
I also cringed at the few passages in which Heinlein indulges in some right-wing educational and political philosophy. But since I'm one of those bleeding-heart tax-the-rich liberals, you should take my reaction with a grain of salt.
Setting that aside (and it's a lot to set aside!) "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" still shows Heinlein near the peak of his skill with words. He paints his future and alternative worlds with an economy of phrase that many of his contemporaries never mastered.
If you'd like to listen to Heinlein's Future History, I strongly recommend other audiobooks: The Green Hills of Earth and The Menace From Earth; after that perhaps Time Enough Fro Love; all these books are prequels to this one.

Shaun Mason is a man without a mission. Not even running the news organization he built with his sister has the same urgency as it used to. Playing with dead things just doesn't seem as fun when you've lost as much as he has.
But when a CDC researcher fakes her own death and appears on his doorstep with a ravenous pack of zombies in tow, Shaun has a newfound interest in life. Because she brings news - he may have put down the monster who attacked them, but the conspiracy is far from dead.
Now, Shaun hits the road to find what truth can be found at the end of a shotgun.

    Great listen
Mira Grant Makes involves you with her characters. She has a talent for making you interested in them from the moment they are introduced. With this second book in the series she does an amazing job of continueing this and leaves you salavating for the next book. If you have not listened to, or read the first book do so before downloading this one so you can enjoy the full experience of the worls she creates. You will not be dissapointed
A gripping story that just keeps getting better.
This second book in the trilogy is even better than the first! The characters continue to have depth; the conspiracies are even more chilling. I was not too fond of the narration in the first book, but Chris Patton does an amazing job in Deadline! I can hardly wait for the third book to come out.
Not a Fun as the First Book
Contrary to the first book here we are mostly left with the brother narrating this story. The actual voice actor does a tremendous job making him sound believably and sometimes humorously cynical. The narrator carries this book bringing Sean, the brother, to life. But far too often he just comes across as bitter and a little unlikeable. The story tries for a playful tone and occasionally succeeds. One of the only interesting parts of this book is a novel plot device the author uses to add a character. The middle book of this trilogy is the weakest by far of the three. I bought them all so I'm forcing myself listen to them. If you liked the first book you'll be a bit disappointed by the second one.

Shaun trying to live his life after what happened in Feed. He has a "odd" way of handling it. I won't say more because I don't reveal spoilers. Read Feed first.

    Publisher's Summary:
At the bloody height of World War II, the deadliest enemies in all of human history were forced to put aside their hatreds and unite against an even fiercer foe: a seemingly invincible power bent on world domination.
With awesome technology, the aggressors swept across the planet, sowing destruction as Tokyo, Berlin, and Washington, D.C., were A-bombed into submission. Russia, Nazi Germany, Japan, and the United States were not easily cowed, however. With cunning and incredible daring, they pressed every advantage against the invaders' superior strength and, led by Stalin, began to detonate their own atom bombs in retaliation.
City after city explodes in radioactive firestorms, and fears grow as the worldwide resources disappear; will there be any world left for the invaders to conquer or for the uneasy allies to defend? While Mao Tse-tung wages a desperate guerrilla war and Hitler drives his country toward self-destruction, U.S. forces frantically try to stop the enemy's push from coast to coast. Yet in this battle to stave off world domination, unless the once-great military powers take the risk of annihilating the human race, they'll risk losing the war.
The fatal, final deadline arrives in Harry Turtledove's grand, smashing finale to the Worldwar series, as uneasy allies desperately seek a way out of a no-win, no-survival situation: a way to live free in a world that may soon be bombed into atomic oblivion.

"A cast of thousands with a plot to match, well-drawn...aliens, a wealth of fascinating speculation." (Kirkus)

    Good book - Audible STINKS!
    Any additional comments?
No where in the description does Audible make it clear this is the FOURTH book in the series...I thought it was the third. Is it really so hard, Audible, to figure out that folks will want to listen to the books in order and that you need to clearly state what that order is in the description?
    Great Story Better Narration
I purchased lthe entire Worldwar sweries and found that the story really carried the recording because the narration was really poor, The story was great though, and i eventually got used to the boring narration, When this version arrived I took a chance and bought it. What a difference. Todd McLearn really delivers and makes the story come to life. I have already bought to first two volumes and plan to buy the next one and the "Colonization" series too. That means I will have paid for the same story twice, but the narration here is so much better than the original version that its worthwhile. I highly recommend the series, but you need to be sure you take them in order. It would be a ot easier to do that if they would number them book one, two etc. Get the frst one put on your headphones and prepare to be swept up in a titanic struggle. Will humanity continue to rule itself, or will it suffer the same fate as did the native Americans when they met superior technology at the hands of Cortez and Columbus. Only Harry Turtledove and you will know for sure.
An amazing series a must read if you like syfy/WW2
A great series overall i just wish he had put alittle bit more into the end like what happens to the characters after the war ends
    Interesting Idea Never Fulfilled-Entire Series
Spoiler AIert-If you plan on reading the entire series, you may want to skip this review.
