Living on the outskirts of a city and scavenging for whatever supplies remain after civilization died two years ago, Gus knows that every time he goes down into undead suburbia could be his last.
Not only does he face a corpse-infested urban hell, human scavengers, and unending loneliness, but now a new mystery has risen.... The undead are disappearing from the streets. A force is gathering, beyond the mountain man's wildest nightmares, even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it's preparing to hunt. Everything I want in a zombie series
Love the story. It's a humble and realistic imagining of what life would be like after an outbreak. Love the obsession with tp, that would be me. It can be a little bro-ie but not over poweringly. The anecdotal information on characters is nice and not belabored. The voice acting is on point.
    The Best Series
Love the Mountain Man books!!! R.C. Bray can do no wrong narrating!!!! He just sucks you into the book whether he's voicing a man, or a woman...he's the best narrater audible has to offer!!!
    :)
Great book. Recommended read / listen for pa / zombie fans.
    Full marks to the author.
    A+
broomsticks, booze, and the zombie apocalypse!
After I tried the free short story "The Hospital " I was instantly hooked in this story. The talented narrator enhances the visceral action and never loses my attention whilst describing the minutiae of the the main character. It's fun and hard to press stop. Definitely recommend!
    Awesome, I want more
What made the experience of listening to Mountain Man the most enjoyable?
I loved the humour and some of the great one liners. The well meaning but flawed character of the 'Gus' really brings a ago old story and well used plot to life!
The narrator is brillant. In fact I will buy stories now simply because of R C Bray's narration!
What did you like best about this story?
The drunken humour and one liners
Which character as performed by R. C. Bray was your favorite?
    Gus
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed several times, and wished I could sit down with the main characters and share a drink with them :-)

The Singularity. It is the era of the posthuman. Artificial intelligences have surpassed the limits of human intellect. Biotechnological beings have rendered people all but extinct. Molecular nanotechnology runs rampant, replicating and reprogramming at will. Contact with extraterrestrial life grows more imminent with each new day.
Struggling to survive and thrive in this accelerated world are three generations of the Macx clan: Manfred, an entrepreneur dealing in intelligence amplification technology whose mind is divided between his physical environment and the Internet; his daughter, Amber, on the run from her domineering mother, seeking her fortune in the outer system as an indentured astronaut; and Sirhan, Ambers son, who finds his destiny linked to the fate of all of humanity.
For something is systematically dismantling the nine planets of the solar system. Something beyond human comprehension. Something that has no use for biological life in any form...

    Hardest of hard SF...
Where does Accelerando rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It is as if my engineering and physics degrees, and every other SF book I've ever read were training grounds preparing me for this book. Throwaway lines about quantum 3d printing (i.e. Captain Picard's replicators), Robert Forward laser sail starships, Frank J. Tipler computational resurrection, fixed-up Matrix plot-lines, nano-tech, Dyson spheres, Fermi's Paradox...all feeling like plausible speculation of taking Moore's law to the Singularity and beyond. And the author pretty much takes for granted you, the humble reader, know about all of these things, and more. But...this author makes it feel like these threads could really happen and weaves them into a story with interesting characters.
What did you like best about this story?
The feeling of realistic (pretty much?) speculation of modern day physics and Moore's law and extrapolating the hell out of it, with every plausible hard SF plot device thrown in. I loved being able to keep up with the author and where he took it. Mind expanding, IMHO. Probably not for everyone...this novel is for hard-SF science/engineering nerds who love to nitpick science fiction movies.
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The narrator was distinctive and interesting, and hung in there like a champ for some of the more obscure bits.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    The Matrix for serious people...
    Any additional comments?
there is about a 30 minute chunk at about hour 13 that is out of order.
    Hang in There
It's a slog, to be blunt, as an audio book at least. You'll soon realize that what makes it difficult is the rather whiplash back and forth, both in the timeline, and between versions of the characters. As is often the case audio book producers have yet to master the art of the pause that gives the listener cues to when a scene changes. It's an especially pronounced in this reading.
What makes it worth the struggle, however, is that this book goes further in imaging the machinations of a post-singularity solar system than any other.

    Publisher's Summary:
For centuries, the world of Safehold, last redoubt of the human race, lay under the unchallenged rule of the Church of God Awaiting. The Church permitted nothing new - no new inventions, no new understandings of the world.
What no one knew was that the Church was an elaborate fraud - a high-tech system established by a rebel faction of Safeholds founders, meant to keep humanity hidden from the powerful alien race that had destroyed old Earth. Then awoke Merlyn Athrawes, cybernetic avatar of a warrior a thousand years dead, felled in the war in which Earth was lost.
Monk, warrior, counselor to princes and kings, Merlyn has one purpose: to restart the history of the too-long-hidden human race.
And now the fight is thoroughly underway. The island empire of Charis has declared its independence from the Church, and with Merlyns help has vaulted forward into a new age of steam-powered efficiency. Fending off the wounded Church, Charis has drawn more and more of the countries of Safehold to the cause of independence and self-determination. But at a heavy cost in bloodshed and loss - a cost felt by nobody more keenly that Merlyn Athrawes.
The wounded Church is regrouping. Its armies and resources are vast. The fight for humanitys future isnt over, and wont be over soon

A long suffering reader ploughs on
This was are very tough review for me. My first impulse was to give it only two stars, but I ultimately awarded a third. The easiest way to explain my opinion is to supply simple pros and cons list, so here goes.
    Pros:
    1. Weber spends a lot of time discussing the details of war that are often overlooked (This is also a con and I'll explain why in the cons list). The importance of manufacturing, uniform measures, supply routes, intelligence, and a myriad of other details are both interesting and rarely come up in the genre.
    2. The history of technological development and it's impact on the world is also very interesting and rarely covered in the science fiction world.
    3. The underlying plot is very engaging. I really want to see what happens when and if the grand inquisitor finds out the truth. I am curiouser and curiouser about the alien species that nearly destroyed humanity.
    Cons
    1. The things interesting in #1-2 above become drudgery after getting the details hour after hour. At times I felt more like I was reading a dry history textbook than a novel. The great characters and plot are crowded out by ceaseless discussion of how long it takes to manufacture a gun and why cavalry rant as good in war as you might imagine. Even well researched info gets boring after a while.
    2. Most of the endless discussion from the first con, is delivered in prose. Sometimes whole chapters slip by with almost no dialogue at all!
    3. The main plot is moving along about the same rate as Jabba the Hut in a foot race. In the last several novels very little has actually happened. A subtitle for several of the books might be "The War continues".
Honestly, I still think it deserves a 2 star rating, but I am interested enough in the plot I'll probably read the next one. I have a hard time giving two star to a novel if I plan to read the next book in the series. There are glimmers of greatness that keep me ganging in there. I am hoping it will suddenly improve and I'll be glad I hung in there.

Classic tale, One of Heinlein's best.
Would you listen to Have Space Suit - Will Travel again? Why?
Yes I would listen to it again, it is one if not the best of Heinlein's tales.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It is a toss up between Kip and PeeWee. Both are very strong characters.
What three words best describe Mark Turetskys voice?
    Just misses the mark.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The title of course, Have Space Suit - Will Travel
    Any additional comments?
The tale was one of my favorites, The narrator M Turetsky some how just misses the tone of the book. Granted I read this tale many, well many many years ago for the first time, as a boy. Given the characters, Kip is just graduating High School and PeeWee at 11, it calls for a voice that can capture that flavor. At one time Audible offered the same book by Whole Cast Audio which fit the book perfectly. But while the narration wasn't as I would like it the tale is still very much worth hearing.
A Light Hearted Space Fantasy, Just a fun Read
What did you love best about Have Space Suit - Will Travel?
A great fantasy about a young man you works hard to get what he wants and along the way has a great adventure. Truly loved the the way the story came together from beginning to end.
What did you like best about this story?
The amazing thing about this book is the space suit takes on a personality of it's own. The type and function of the suite plays a key role. Detail where needed but not too much to slow the book down.
Have you listened to any of Mark Turetskys other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not but his performance was excellent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this entire book while brewing a batch of beer listened to it from beginning to end in on shot.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great juvenile fiction book which has an appeal for adults as well. If you looking for a good book for your teenagers this is a good choice. One thing I enjoy is it does not have the violence of modern teenage books like Hunger Games or even Divergent. This big is a good listen for a family on a car trip a great fantasy that every one would love to be a part of.
Wry humor obliterated by inept reading
This is my favorite Heinlein book since I first read it in the 1960's.

    a little confusing
I'm not exactly sure how this goes into book 1 and 2. Seems like it belongs in a totally different series. It was a bit of a struggle to finish. I will go on to book 4 so at least I finished the series. I love Octavia but this wasn't so great. the narration was mediocre at best.
    Octavia Butler never disappoints!!
The story was so riveting that I felt like it ended way too soon. The characters were nicely developed, the storyline was intriguing, and the speaker stayed true to the voice of each character.
    So so dark
Her writing is so solid. I feel like i missed a boom or something... The story starts a giant leap into the future and i guess I'm stuck in a more formulaic story rut. It was interesting, but very dark.
    Amazing!
Why isn't this a movie? What a riveting, well written story. I could not stop listening!
This is not book 3 of The Patternists
I kept waiting for its connection to the first 2 books. There is none. Completely different story.

FINALLY SOMETHING LIVES UP TO WILD SEED!!
Brilliant narrator who wonderfully makes the listener believe that he has intimate knowledge of more than a dozen different characters.
The story itself reminds me of the first book by Octavia Butler that I read, and the reason I'm so into AfroFuturism, Wild Seed. For a while I was worried that Wild Seed was the best story of the genre and that I would never again experience the unadulterated joy of a story of that caliber. I've been exposed to other works by Octavia and other writers and found myself wanting more than the works could offer. This book totally restored my faith.
    Annoyed
There's no way I can listen to this. The reader's voice is terribly annoying!!!!! Will have to wait until I have time to read it.
    Meh
Listen to the series in the series order, not the publication order. This book is worth a listen because it finished the story, but as her first published, it lacks the polish of the other three.
    Not one of her best
I really disliked the reader who seemed to be reading at times robotically. The story was good, but not great.
That was pretty good. It is an interesting world.
The world that this book takes place in is very different from what we saw in Wild Seed and Mind of My Mind. You definitely have to read/listen to Clay's Ark to understand this world. The world is not pleasant at all. This series could have ended for me in the 2nd book. Don't stop until the 4th if you happen to read the 3rd.

    Members Reviews:
An upgrade to the lost fleet series.
I really enjoyed this book, partly because William Dufris is as usual amazing, and partly because this was just really well written. The plot line is engaging, you hate the bad guys, and the hero isn't so noble as is the case in most of these contemporary sci fi books.
As far as the actual combat I thought they were the best I've read. Better then the lost fleet, and more dramatic. If you like military sci-fi I believe you'll find a lot of enjoyment in this title.
    Tongue-In-Cheek Matinee Sci-Fi
This has a little bit of the attitude from the TV series Firefly. The level of sarcasm is as high as the level of rebelliousness. Ethan is the ever competent pilot caught in an unwanted war just trying to eke out a living while bucking the system. I like the devious war lords and the indomitable warriors fighting tyranny. And, lest I forget, the insectoid alien invaders that continue to threaten to exterminate humanity throughout the galaxy. This book has so many Sci-Fi elements included that it seems more like a television series gone amok than it does an ordinary Space Opera. If I do decide to continue with this series it will be because of the dramatic performance of William Dufris and the sheer fun of the thing.
William Dufris is always wonderful. He put so much emotion into his performance that the story comes to life. I really like his character voices. Other great Dufris audiobook performances include Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, and Woken Furies by Richard K. Morgan.
Great story and reader, couldn't stop listening!
Would you consider the audio edition of Dark Space to be better than the print version?
Probably so since you get to hear the great William Dufris bring the story and it's characters to life!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alara/Angel, I liked her fight to survive and how she handled her situation.
What about William Dufriss performance did you like?
Everything, he is a masterful story reader.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! Which is rare for me, I couldn't stop listening to this book it was so intense and suspenseful and entertaining!!
    Any additional comments?
This is great pure sci-fi goodness at its best, if you like space sagas you will love this book!
    Decently good book.
If you could sum up Dark Space in three words, what would they be?
Another reviewer compared to lost fleet. It's a little less science then that if possible. Straight sci fi story. Good with out the long draw on of how long it takes to travel 1000000 miles across a planetary system ect ect that some authored love to tell you about for endless hours. I call it sci fi light which is what I like. So I enjoyed the heck out of the book. A little short for a credit is the only negative I can give this book. Narrator did a decent job.

A thrilling spin-off from Jack Campbells The Lost Fleet series, The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight delivered "excellent tales of space battles and struggles against tyrants and aliens". Now the New York Times best-selling author returns with the next chapter in the overthrow of the Syndicate Worlds oppression.
Following a successful coup, the leaders of the rebel Midway Star System struggle to forge a government free enough to please its citizens yet strong enough to secure power. But in a world where former rulers have become new foes, an alien threat to humanity may turn old adversaries into uncertain allies.

    The Midway Star System viewpoint
The Lost Star Series is Jack Campbells the second spin off of the Lost Fleet Series. This series takes the view point of the Syndicate Worlds primarily, The Midway Star System. This system has been featured in a number of the recent book. This book is the alternate view point from the book The Guardian from the Beyond the Frontier Series. The key players are President Gwen Iceni and General Artur Drakon head of the ground forces of Midway Star System. The last half of the book is new material relating only to Midway. The story has lots of space action as well as intrigue, suspense and some humor. Commander Bradamount, the Captain of Dragon, a cruiser in Admiral Black Jack Geary fleet is assigned to be the liaison officer to Midway and stays behind when the fleet leaves the system. Togo is President Icenis body guard and Morgan and Malen are General Drakon key assistants these three provide a lot of the intrigue and suspense of the story. Bradamount accompanies the Midway fleet to Alliance Space to retrieve 5000 prisoner of war. These highly trained spaceship crews are vital to the needs of Midway. There are about 1500 of these that chose to go to their home worlds and some promise to get their families and come on to Midway. But the underline suspense, are there SNAKES (Syndicate secret police) hidden in the POWs? Marc Vietor did a good job narrating the book. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
    Another Sleepless Night...

    Great story
This is book four in the Frontier Series. Aurora is damaged and in need of repair and upgrade. The Aurora is in obit above the planet of Corinair. In the prior book Aurora fought off a TaAkar warship that was going to destroy the planet. Most of the action in this episode takes place on the planet and only toward the end does action return to Aurora when a commando group attempts to take control of the ship. Brown uses this episode to introduce us to the legend of Na Tan. The people of Corinair think Nathan is Na Tan.
Brown is continuing to develop his characters and we lose some people and gain some new ones. It is nice to have characters make mistakes unlike some of the super heroes in some books that are always perfect. The book is well written; the plot twists and turns with lots of action. The various groups on the planet are fighting each other until I wanted to yell at them wake up; work together the Ta Akar will come back. Brown is a super story teller and I have enjoyed this series so far. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the book.
    This is not a book
What disappointed you about Freedom's Dawn?
The story is fine. However Audible should refund to anyone who bought chapter 2 &4 ( I cant call them books) Charge for one but not both While I am enjoying the story I will NEVER start another Ryk Bron series or stand alone book because of the pricing
What other book might you compare Freedom's Dawn to and why?
It a space sage. Not as good as theLost fFeet but I am enjoying it
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Freedom's Dawn?
    Combine books 1&2 and 3&4
    Any additional comments?
I hope breaking story's in to 7 hour chapters and selling as books is not a trend!
    another solid entry
continuing space opera with decent pace and action. good narrator and good solid story telling. I look forward to the next book.
Space Opera at it's finest! I had the books on Ki
...ndle, upgraded to narration, and now am pleased to say I have them all and cannot wait to binge listen. To have the entire saga read to me after reading and characterizing the players in my own head, to have the gratification of another take on it is thrilling to me.
Go buy them all. And shoot Ryk an email congratulating him on the creation of such a great story with characters that make you wonder what they're doing the day after you finished an episode. Then thank him for the exact same thing.
Have I gone abit fanboy? Probably. Do I care? Not one iota.
    It's that good.
Go buy them all. Now. NOW!!!
    Continues to be Great
I wasn't sure I would enjoy a book that centers around one planet, but Ryk Brown continues to deliver. With every new book I find myself excited to see if the Aurora will finally be refitted and fully repaired to 100%, as we've seen what she can do with minimal repairs and severe damage thus far. Book 4 continues to offer continued character development and great narration.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the Pacific, as USS Walker is repaired and updated after a previous battle and Reddy is healing from his wounds, planning begins for a bold raid on the very heart of the Grik Empire.
But time is running out for the Alliance army in India, and the Allied forces in the west must gather in an unprecedented land, air, and sea campaign to destroy the mighty Grik battle fleet and break through to their relief. All other plans go on hold when the attempt proves more difficult - and more heartbreakingly costly - than anyone imagined.
Meanwhile, the struggle continues on other fronts near and far: in the jungles of Borno in distant Southern Africa and in the Americas, where the allies are finally learning the terrible truth about the twisted Dominion.
The Alliance is on the offensive everywhere, but their enemies have a few surprises, including new weaponry and new tactics...and a stunning geographic advantage that Reddy never suspected. Until now.

    Long in tooth...
After a year away from Taylor Anderson's "other earth", I'm starting to wait less eagerly at the next book in the series. Its fun, irreverent and entertaining and the expanding world is interesting but between the meat of the pages, I kept waiting for more ground to be covered. With a cast that now easily spans beyond a few dozen, I'd expect the novels to expand to fit the multiple plot lines and/or move slightly faster.
As much as the inner kid in me loves in the idea of dinosaur piloted zeppelins duking it out with a fleet of vintage WWII boats and planes piloted by Humans and Lemurs, I'm worried by the end I'll of experienced too much of a good thing.
There's only so many times Walker, Mahan Salissa and Catalina can make death defying escapes. Only so many Human enclaves that seem feasibly to be "off the grid" as far as the Grik and Lemurians are concerned and only so many antics that sideshow (stooges) trio of Dennis, Larry and Moe can perform.... before all the troupes are tired.
I'm all for this series but I'd like to see it wrap up. Perhaps an end could lead to more adventures but for now I just want the feeling that this series has a conclusion.... even if just for a moment.
    Back In Action
Its nice to see some of the political intrigues getting finished up. Hopefully the Alliance will pull together again after some of the internal strife. Cant wait for the next book as usual.
Nice to see them (The Alliance) find more allies and scary to think that the Grik/Jap might have too.
I can not wait for book 9. Book 8 is Great !
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
As soon as a new book is released I immediately wait for the next one. I have always been pleased with the characters moving in and out of the chapters. I don't know how the author keeps everything moving like he does. Maybe submarines are coming soon as the alliance keeps coming up with new weapons. The torpedo was a game changer in this one.
So in a word, YES I recommend this book and it would be a shame that an avid reader has not started getting to know the characters from the first moment of the first book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    I like Silva.
