NOTE: I feel the need to state this up front: When I tried Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead a year ago it was a DNF for me. I am fairly certain it was a combo of mood and this is a little outside my reading zone (fantasy is always hit/miss). A friend suggested I try it on audio and that made a world of difference to me. I was drawn into the story and didn't get to bogged down in the areas that tripped me up before.

First Thought when Finished:Gameboard of Gods by Richelle Mead was a fascinating mixture of fantasy, mythology, and kick ass UF.

Story Thoughts: If you like stories based on mythology (not just Greek but at this point Norse too--going to guess more later) then I think you will enjoy Gameboard of the Gods. There are a few pacing issues for the first half and I think the world building could have been a little stronger BUT the story is there. The unique twist that Richelle Mead gave this genre makes me excited to listen to the next book: The Immortal Crown. The story had a strong second half that picked up the pace, broadened the mystery (which I thought was well done), and gave the characters more depth. It was definitely worth a read!

Character Thoughts: Richelle has always had the unique ability to take a character which you normally wouldn't root for (Rose in VA, Adrian in Bloodlines, Roman from the Succubus series, and Eugenie from Dark Swan) and making them work. Same works here with Justin. Seriously on paper there is not much that makes him the kind of guy you root for: serious player, has a bit of a drinking problem, thinks he is always right, and can cut to the quick with his tongue. Yet, you find yourself rooting for him anyway. Mae is pretty kick ass and I think we have just reached the tip of the iceberg of who she is. She is a lot like Rose and Eugenie in that she is far from perfect, a bit edgy, and does things that are a bit outside the box. These two characters with all their imperfections work really well together!

Not funny, just a lot of fighting

Somehow I got the idea that this book was going to be funny, and it wasnt. It was really pretty tedious, too much detail about how an out-of-shape IT guy has to go through a personal training regime in order to be an adequate host for an alien who has decided to co-habitate in his body with him. There are glimmers of an interesting, millennia-long backstory of how these aliens have meddled in human affairs, but it is told, not shown, and basically amounts to a bunch of supposedly advanced beings who cannot figure out how to make peace with each other. The bad guys are cardboard, and the good guys are not much better, they are a bunch of power hungry, vengeful kids fighting in a playground, only their playground is all of human history.

If you like endless descriptions of workouts, handgun training, martial arts training, and fights between people who spend all their time learning to shoot guns and throw kicks, this book is for you.

If you like complex stories with characters you actually care about, move along to the next book on your to read list.

[I listened to this as an audio book read by Mikael Naramore. I wish the reader would have differentiated more between the voices. Since a lot of the dialog happens inside the characters heads as they discuss things telepathically with the aliens who are inside them, it was frequently difficult to tell whether they were talking with their inside voices or their outside voices. Presumably this was done in different fonts in the print version, which would have made some passages clearer but ultimately would not have improved the book, in my opinion.]

It's OK

It starts with an engaging premise, and decent characters. However, as it proceeds it feels as though the plot relies on cliche plot devices. If you have seen Hollywood movies you have a good idea of what is going to happen, and how. I found the book enjoyable at times, until some of the fight scenes. The fight scenes are redundant and cliche, and with the book down. When one arose it was tough to slog through. I do not anticipate reading this again.

Talbot Quadrant

I think there is an error in the listing of this book. It is marked Honor Harrington Book 14 which is wrong. There is nothing about Honor and the book does not pick up where book 13 ended. I am still waiting with anticipation to find out what happened to Manticore , Grayson and Torch after the attack by Mesa Alignment group and then the Solarian Navy. Bits and pieces are hinted at in this and other secondary series books. When will we learn about what's going on? This book is correctly marked as book three in the Saganami series which is mainly about Admiral Michelle Henke (Lady Goldpeak) and her command in the Talbot Quadrant. Next to Honor I like Mike the best. She is Honor best friend since Academy days. This book Mike discovers the Mobius Liberation Front is in a full scale uprising against the corrupt government of the their world along with the Solarian Office of Frontier Security. Mike learns that the Liberation Front thinks that Manticore has provided them with arms and is to help them.

Boring Hard-to-Follow Transcript

The narrator did a good job, considering what he had to work with. He had to read the name of every speaker!!! The book is 39 minutes of a boring story that sounds like this:

Brown: Hey, John. How did you like "Walk the Plank"?

Smith: It was pretty boring. I fell asleep listening to it.

Jackson: Oh, no. And you bought the whole series, didn't you?

Smith: Yeah, Steve, I did.

Andrews: Bummer. You bought it too, didn't you, Mary?

Perkins: Yep. I'm going crazy listening to the narrator read everybody's name!

Brown: Man, I bet that really sucks.

Smith: No kidding. Hope it gets better as the series progresses.

What would have made Walk the Plank better?

The writing style. The narrator having to say the characters name each and every line of dialog... ouch

How could the performance have been better?

I think the performance suffered with what he had to work with.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I couldn't finish listening to it. I suffered through the first series but I just didn't look forward to listening, so I stopped.

Any additional comments?

Just listen to the preview and ask yourself if you can tolerate that writing style for very long in audio format. The story seemed interesting but the dialog was choppy and the poor narrator had to constantly announce the person talking. Maybe this would be a better read vs. a listen because you could just gloss over the names. Thinking about it more, maybe as just text it would be better because there are those times where you read some dialog assuming it is one character, only to find out it was someone else talking at then end.

But in audio format like this, it just drove me crazy. Since the narrator does different voices, maybe they should have cut some of the name announcing out.

Short Interim Episode

This short, tense installment is written in the form of an audio transcript, and has a bit of a horror theme to it. It works all right, though you could skip it if needed since it doesn't involve the same characters as the first installment.

I enjoyed the series more as I went through each episode. At first I struggled because it seemed like random stories set in this universe. But as it continued and I realized it was interwoven story lines I enjoyed them more. The main characters were enjoyable. It's pretty traditional sci fi fare but still worth the read.

I Enjoyed It ...

Where does Heechee Rendezvous rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Probably in the middle. This is more of a traditional space opera story, and fits neatly into that genre. Pohl was an editor before becoming a writer and his familiarity with the genre shows here. This is a tightly plotted story that moves along nicely. Parts of it are a little "wordy' but overall it is traditional Sci Fi and a good third book in the series.

What did you like best about this story?

Understanding the Heechee, their intentions and the reasons for their retreat was interesting.In many ways the story is a backdrop to Pohl's fascination with physics and I enjoyed the argument between a pro-Einstein version and a pro-Quantum version of astrophysics.

Have you listened to any of Oliver Wymans other performances before? How does this one compare?

I thought he was great. He has done all three int his series and I thought it was interesting how he made Robin "sound" like he had aged (from the first book). Also his representation of Albert was great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No I rarely do that, but it doesn't diminish that this was a good book.

Any additional comments?

The first book in this series was a ground breaking book, no doubt about it. The second and third books are more conventional in their plot and storyline.Some readers might not like this, adn stopping after the first book might make sense. I enjoyed finding out what happened to Robinette after the first book, and adjusted my expectations during books two and three. It doesn't mean they are not as good, just that they are different in narrative, story and tone. Pohl is a traditional Sci Fi writer like Clarke and Asimov and readers of those authors will enjoy this book and this series.It is entertaining and interesting.

Third in the series by the same narrator. Very enjoyable and the different voices really makes the story come alive

An amazing story continues!

I rarely follow a series to its conclusion, but Frederik Pohl delivers another page-turner in the incredible Heechee Series. The characters are now like well-known acquaintances--or even friends--and the scope and sweep of the story continues to expand and excite. Pohl is a great storyteller with an immense scientific knowledge. I'm now on to the next book!

As the 3rd installment this was IMO the 2nd best book of the series. At the time Pohl wrote this the imagination and creativity is astounding. His Gateway world really gets indepth here.

Okay but nearly as good as the previous books

Would you try another book from Frederik Pohl and/or Oliver Wyman?

Yes, I definitely would, one bad book from Pohl won't turn me off yet.

What was most disappointing about Frederik Pohls story?

Spoilers for previous book:

We are constantly reminded that the virtual people are living in a virtual world. "I could see space through the viewscreen, but off course I wasn't really seeing it because I don't actually have eyes nor was the viewscreen real either..." Over and over and over, I get it has some point in the story but my goodness I felt beaten over the head with it.

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Nothing, his voice acting was superb.

Was The Annals of the Heechee worth the listening time?

I'm iffy on that, I wanted another book because I felt the last one ended abruptly but part of me feels like I should have stopped there.

I liked getting some closure (sort of) on Robin.

If you like scifi, the heeche series are a good bet. This is the 4th book in the series, and i enjoyed all of the book, i only wish 5th and 6th were available as audio books...

Very slow read.

It got tedious in places...

The problem with Frederick Pohl's writing is that it is pretty dense. And he is pretty insistent on teaching us something.

Which can get a little long winded.

He is very much Albert Einstein, and I am Robinette Broadhead.

But he does write a heck of a good story.

The series has gotten boring at this point.

I struggled to finish this book. just boring and lame. I got so sick of the computer land folks and the writer refuses to bring the book back around to reality. I just couldn't take it anymore. I quit.

As always book was excellent

just keeps getting better!

I am amazed at this author's ability to weave incredibly intricate patterns around the thinking of vastly diverse cultural memes. if we ever discover other intelligent alien species , CJ Cherry's work on this series will prove, I'm sure, to be profoundly useful. but this is by no means a purely intellectual exploration. it is filled with intrigue, Danger, heroism, and lots of action.

Outstanding story! Highly satisfying!

The 9th book in this series and they keep getting better and better. Very exciting and very satisfying. I have so enjoyed each succeeding story culminating with the final story in this sequence. More politics, intrigue, and Bren Cameron continues to be the central figure in this saga. Daniel May does another wonderful job narrating this story. Warm, amusing, consistent, simply outstanding. Experience these stories in sequence. You will not be disappointed. Bren saves the day once again. Well done in every aspect.

So many things to appreciate about this story

I continue to enjoy this and these books in this series. AS a lover of books in general and storytelling in particular this is a masterful bit on design and character construction. It regular in structure and but the content is dramatic, creative and very interesting.

meditative classic

this is not a slam bam scifi, but rather a more meditative, philosophical piece. the opening is poetic in style and description. then there is the visits to other worlds and peoples section which I enjoyed more when it dealt with differing types of potential creatures and would have liked to see more of this, like Sagan's Cosmos, but this is a very early work and so kudos to Stapledon for stretching ideas beyond bug eyed monsters. this middle gets too political though, showing how these cultures seem to follow similar histories and it may be that he was satirizing human politics. the end is excellent with the meeting with the star maker, though again, not a shoot em up type of finish. overall i thought there was much to ponder and you can see the influence on Clarke's Childhood's End and 2001 and much more beyond. I will keep going with the Stapledon's available.

Literally (literally) awesome

And it was published in 1937! Seriously amazing. Stapledon is an under-appreciated genius.

Dull with no plot

This book is like The Silmarillion, except for alien/religious sci-fi. There is no plot, only history and more existential angst than Nirvana could have ever hoped to imagine. The author would wiggle out of explain in the details of cool alien technology by saying he didn't have time or could not understand it. While a few novel concepts were introduced, it was mostly hackneyed and frustrating in my opinion. I don't recommend it.

The greatest book I've ever read...

...and this performance does it justice. This book is truly the vision of a genius.

A fitting end to a great story from 42 years ago

This is the end of the story that started with Ringworld written in 1970, then some prequels were written that are pretty good and a must read if you are getting into these books so start there if you haven't read Ringworld years ago.

There isn't much to say about these reviews of books that are latter in a series other to say that its good or bad because if you have read the past books and liked them then its safe to say if other reviews say its good you don't have to know much more that that - well this is a great book, its the last one but there could be many more of them if the Authors want to write more of them.

This is a great book so if you liked the others then you will like this one.

Not - really - a RingWorld book.

This book, while set in the Ringworld universe, has very little Ringworld in it. None of the actual story takes place on Ringworld, it is only mentioned as background and side-story for what I'll call "The Flight of the Puppeteers".

Tom Weiner gives an even, consistent performance.

Nothing sticks out in my mind regarding this story.

The Art of Negotiating with Aliens

STORY - Foreigner is a story told from the perspective of Bren Cameron, who is on a foreign planet and is the sole human negotiator/translator responsible for keeping peace between a human colony and the planet's natives, the Atevi. There are vast biological, philosophical, technological, political and language differences between the species that make his job very interesting and complicated. Further, there are multiple factions within each species that have their own motives and special interests that must also be respected. Things comes to a fever-pitch crisis when the spaceship which brought the human colony to the planet 200 years ago returns unexpectedly. Seeing it return to their skies, the Atevi are rightfully suspicious of its purpose and how its presence may affect their safety.

The story is unusual and very interesting, filled with alien politics, mind games and betrayals. There is some action and suspense, but this is really a book about how Bren negotiates through the multiple crises he is faced with. If you are looking for space travel, wormholes, battles between worlds, you need to look elsewhere. I plan to continue this series, but I must admit that I hope (and expect) the next sequence to have a little more "Star Trek stuff." If not, I will probably become bored with the series and quit.

NARRATOR - Very good. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 is because it wasn't a particularly difficult performance.

OVERALL - I enjoyed this book and recommend it, but it may not have enough action for all sci-fi enthusiasts.

Continuing Story of the Paidhi

This is the second book of the first trilogy. It is a solid continuance of the story and the drama of the Paidhi.

Second book IS BETTER !!! :-)

As i said before the narration was excellent!!!!!

The main thing is it's not a sequel, The bok is continuation of story line.

If you listen the books in sequence you won't even understand , where the first book ends and the second one begins.

And it is getting much more interesting!!!!

great second book

If you havent read my review of book 1 go there it has more to say about what happens, this is sorta a review to tell you that since this is actually book 2 and there are 3 books in this first "Sequence" the reviews for the first in the "Sequence" are for all 3 books because for the most part its really 1 book split into 3 books there isnt any actual ending until the end of a "Sequence" and lets face it if you like the first book then you will probably want to finish the group

Well crafted. More exciting.

This is a great sequel to the first book in the series. I thought the last book had interesting ideas and explored the alien relationships well. I understand why C.J. Cherryh decided to write the first book as she did.
