Nothing too exceptional

It had been a while since I listened to the first two books in this series, so honestly it was all a bit foggy. However, there isn't much to worry about catching up on, since this series is all about the space action, and you're thrown right into it. This is for military sci fi fans who just want a quick adventure, with lots of explosions and not much in the way of character development or deep thought. It seems to try to emulate some of Campbell's "Lost Fleet" success, while lacking almost all of the actual substance behind that series.

My biggest complaint, aside from the shallowness of the book and the fantastical technologies employed, is how there isn't really any sense of danger or tension in the battles, because the good guys are just so much better than the enemy that there really is no contest. Each engagement seems set up to be a hopeless situation, but the captain's genius brings them through every time, while making sheer fools out of the enemy and making them out to be pure imbeciles. If it's so easy, then it just doesn't feel as significant. Then we skip any kind of resolution and jump straight to the next mission - this really feels like a series of "episodes" rather than a novel.

It's not a terrible book, but not a great one - thus the 2 stars overall.

Continues Smoothly From First Two Books

With Book 3, the universe of the Man of War series has expanded and author Honsinger opts for a very definitive punctuation mark at the end (though the series continues). Those enjoying the exuberant speeches and World-buildling-through-dialogue will no doubt have fun with Brothers in Valor. For there is plenty of action (and speeches) here to keep readers engaged.

Story: What looks to be a trap - often is? Warily, the Cumberland follows strict orders from Admiral Hornmeyer to enter Krag territory and take down a feared tactician, code named 'Admiral Birch'. But is it luck or are they about to find themselves three layers deep in deception? And will Robichaux's canniness be able to pull them out of this latest fix?

As with previous books, our Star Trek meets Master and Commander dialogue between young skipper Robichaux and uptight doctor Sahin is the heart of the book.

Too Much

I've read a couple of Sara King's books now and what readers can expect is: a LOT of pages, violence, heavy torture, everyman characters who have heart but not brains, oppressive regimes, silly romance, and fluid storytelling. With Fortune's Rising, King takes all of those themes and tips them completely over the top; it translates into a lot of stupid people in soppy romances with egregious torture porn throughout - at a whopping 600 pages. Admittedly, by about 90% listening to the Audible version, I had had enough and felt dirty and disgusted with the whole thing. 10 showers later and I still can't wipe the filth off from this book - it managed to hit nearly every trigger. It's far more enticing to Saw/Hostel horror fans than science fiction aficionados.

Story: Fortune is a planet with a treasure: alien creatures with psychic abilities whose eggs can be harvested to create a powerful drug. But harvesting is dangerous and if the harvesters (called eggers) aren't killed in the process, they eventually go mad from proximity to the yolk. Nephyrs (cyborgs) control the eggers and reap the profits of the yolk. Among the inhabitants of Fortune: twin rebel brothers Milar (who escaped becoming a Nephyr and bears the scars from the process) and Patrick, nephyr operator Tatiana who crash lands on the planet and is found by the brothers, egger sisters Magali (who harbors a terrifying secret) and preternaturally gifted but highly sociopathic Anna, a former smuggler and now prisoner/egger Runaway Joel, and an AI robot who becomes fully sentient, Doberman. Their paths will intertwine as a prophecy comes to fruition.

Our lovable but oh-so-flawed characters will do things to each other that far outweighs anything the bad guys can do. If someone is called a sociopath in a Sara King novel, they are truly going to do very terrible things with aplomb. The twist here is that our sociopath is 9 years old. The ugliness adds up fast.

With Forging Zero, King's previous work, we had a hero that was tortured but very likeable even with his flaws.

so exceptional

I find myself rereading the series over and over. I really like to listen to a bit of it each day in addition to the other books I listen to for the first time. I extremely rarely re-read a book.

True to reality! Not Fairytale! Not for weak hearted!!

Trying not to spoil anything I'll just say this is another great installment from the world David Achord has brought us, what I loved the most is the realism the book brings to a world flipped on its ear, where man is eating man, mankind has slipped backwards pertaining to morales and humanity's DISGUISTING traits have bubbled to the surface!! If your disturbed by this story I ask you to sit back and ask yourself what you expect from people should life as we know it take a road such as this story portrays...? Think of the horrors mankind suffers upon on another in today's world then imagine the horrors man would be capable of with No Repercussions, no law, no Justice... If you want to read apocalyptic stories then don't expect Happy Endings because I doubt those would exist once society crumbles as they barely exist Now!! Buy The Ticket.. Take The Ride!!!

Imagine the most depressing book ever.

I listened in bemused dislike as the author, like an angry childish god, tore down all he had built in the worst way possible.

Great addition to the series

These books have become a favorite of mine in the genre. The characters are well thought out, even if Zach is a bit of a Mary Sue. The only thing that detracts from this book over others is that huge storyline are sometimes glossed over through the use of a diary notation rather than the author giving the exposition, so I felt cheated a bit, especially at the end, which I won't spoil, but it marks a massive shift in any future story line. The only other nit is that the author needs a few synonyms for chortle! That word is used so much I found it distracting. Overall all though I thought it was excellent.

First of all, if I here "nodded" one more time, I'm going to scream.

Second of all, no teenager in the absolute history of the world ever used the word edify.

Third of all, even with the absurd notion that everyone in Tennessee talks like it's the 1840's and that a supposed teenager has an identic memory and has read every obscure book known to mankind, the story of the book overcomes these absurdities.

So, if you can get past the "I nodded" stuff and the superman like teenager skills, you'll find a very good zombie apocalypse story.

Spy flick meets First contact. :)

What did you love best about Starfire?

This type of story was different as it felt like a realistic play of events if something like this were to happen. Scrambling of governments, rushing ahead of the others, risking all in the process. It wasn't as flashy as some of the other scifi stories I've listened too but it felt real and sort of left a dark feeling on me. Not in a bad way, just made me wonder if something like this would play out in real life if this ever happened.

What other book might you compare Starfire to and why?

I'd like to sort of compare this to the movie contact. But not completely. Its a story about choices and decisions. So for me, it really stands out on its own.

Which scene was your favorite?

There is a part towards the middle in which scientists face a decision that will affect humanity greatly. When I got to this part, I stopped and wondered what I would do. Even going out and asking others opinions. It was odd, I couldn't even think of a time in which I saw, read, or heard of anything like this before. It really made me think.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Decisions have lasting outcomes.

I'm a huge fan of this writer. Big fan. This story was different and was unique all in its own way. Each character was well created and explained. No one is safe to survive this story as I was shocked a few times. Many times I felt conflicted on what happened. Out of all scifi stores I've come across, this one really left a lasting feeling of how decisions could change everything about humanity. I can't say much without ruining it for anyone reading this but I will say, if you like scifi with a bit of a realistic spin to it, and maybe a bit of cloak and dagger this might be a good one for you. Don't expect space battles or anything like that but it stands alone as a good scifi story. This one is really good. I recommend it.

Larson (And You) Needs To Read 'Saturn Run'

'Starfire' and John Sandford's 'Saturn Run' are about the same thing. Each is propelled by a a cleverly different idea about Saturn and aliens. The difference is that Sanford is apparently not just a good craftsman, but a great one. Great? If you didn't believe it before, listen to, as I just did, the two books back-to-back. Unwittingly, Sandford gives Larson and us a writing lesson.

Take for example Larson's chameleon characters who develop entirely new skill sets whenever the plot needs them.

The Devil Wears Prada... But He Eats Raspani

'31 Hours and 26 Minutes of Superior SciFi ' pretty much sums up book 4--

It's an awesome addition to the series, well crafted with excellent world-building and character development, with just enough science to ground the series.

Now my Ort's on fire and my quantum tattoo's tingling in anticipation of book 5.

Unfortunately, my Raspani mind enhancer's on the fritz and that's why this review's de-vol-ving.... I now return to my baseline 'meat-animal' status....

Daisy, Daisy....

Totally Captivating!

This book sucks you into another world and refuses to let go until you get to the end. This is one of the most pleasurable books I have listened to on audiobooks. The narration by Summerer is clear, concise and a real asset to the book. As far as the the story and writing by Bennett there are only two words that come to mind - World Class!

series is great

I would rate this top 100 book series in this genre. but as I want to be fair the super in the super men needs explaining more compared norms. however making the super kobani humans " human " so incredible and vivid that they are "humans with superpowers" not just supers in two dimensional sense. the charecters become alive and on a personal note I want a ripper companion !!

This was a bit more of pure military Syfy but still quite good. cannot wait for the next book.

I HOPE YOU'LL EXCUSE MY DULL WIT

CLOCKMAKERS LIE

The COMPLEX GEOMETRY and MOSIAC words were beautiful at times, but a little distracting for this simpleton. THE BONE AND MEAT MASTERS were excessively mean in their treatment of the servant robots. If the story would have remained with THE MECHANICAL and his struggles, I would have been intrigued. The foul mouth queen was also an interesting character. All put together, like a Kevin Anderson Saga, caused my mind to boggle. Various political systems of several strange countries and the lack of focus on one central character, caused my circuits to fry.

Something for every stripe of scienc fiction fan.

Finally something new and engaging in a genre that has become fixated on the science at the expense of the fiction. Without burdening the reader with gibberish technological details, the author has a spun wonderful story that melds fantasy and sci-fi and alternate history in a way that seems at once to be both realistic and fanciful. Kudos go to the narrator as well. Performing a piece that combines many nuanced characters in conjunction with robotic voices is no small task but he pulls it off masterfully. Big thumbs up!

Good, but too unrelentingly dark

Interesting worldbuilding, interesting characters. It is also one long tale of urelenting misery being inflicted on those characters with no letup or breathing space worth mentioning listened to this in chunks over weeks because it just got depressing

Creative and thought-provoking

Alternate history sci fi novel. Mechanicals (Clakkers, Servitors) were invented by a Dutch inventor and made the Netherlands a superpower. Members of The Guild called Horologists fix and maintain the clakkers and protect the secret of their inner workings. Clakkers are smarter and stronger and are controlled by a pre-programmed hierarchy called the gesha. There is a way for them to gain free will and be free of the gesha, and the novel tells the story of Jax, how he obtained free will, was considered a rogue, and ran for his life.

Love this author!!!

I will read whatever he writes. I love the steampunkish setting, what an imagination! HE FORCES YOU TO USE YOURS!

Charming, Enjoyable, Solid, FUN

I shall say right out front, that I received a promotional copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

I will further say, that I plan to spend one of my own credits when the talented Ms. Klett and Mr. Sutherland release the next book in audio.

Perhaps I was a lost cause from the start. I adore a good scifi. I adore a new clever take on faster than light travel. I adore a military scifi (especially naval). I adore sailing and tall ships. I adore a smart, tough female protagonist refusing to let patriarchy define her.

And I adore a well intonated British accent.

"Into the Dark" would have had me from the third page... even if it WEREN'T a darn good story.

Horatio Hornblower, Honor Harrington, Sassinak, Kylara Vatta, Keladry of Mindolin, a bit of Nicholas Seafort...

if Mr. Sutherland isn't familiar with all these series, he damn well ought to be, for it's hardly a ground-breaking genre... but why should it be? Sutherland's story is well-paced, plausible, amusing and somber by turns. Alexis Carew is a fine inheritor of the reluctant, or perhaps humble, hero mantle. Her demeanor is charmingly modern, her disinterest in the trappings of expected behavior admirable, and her interaction with others totally credulous.

I was charmed.

The book is also, in many ways, absurd.

The mental gymnastics required to shoehorn Tall Ships into interstellar space are... daunting. BUT, by God, Sutherland managed it, and I was willing to buy the whole line of nonsense... and smile. It IS absurd, but... I found myself shrugging and saying "well, and why not?" Sails and rigging and cannon and broadsides, and 18th century British naval discipline alongside FTL transit, and colony disputes. I laughed, I shook my head in astonishment that I was OK with it.

And I was. Completely.

Elizabeth Klett is charming, well paced, and clearly in tune with the material. Her cultured British accent at times both at odds with the content, and yet perfectly tuned to set the stage. The production is clean, the audio quality top notch, and I applaud her performance. I look forward to more.

Do treat yourself to this one. If you are a lover of Sci Fi, if you are an admirer of strong female characters who simply (to quote a recent meme) "give absolutely zero ^#$(*&" about what the world expects of them. If you love a good naval romp, or if you just want to have a fun time in a fanciful yet gritty world...

Why?

Love the series, but I'm not sure why this was needed. And since I'm really in to the series and buying all the books, why not throw this in as a bonus, like some other series have done? There's just not enough there to warrant paying for it, in my opinion. I'll just stick to the novels.

Mini audio books are bad

This trend of 2 hour books is ridiculous. It is lazy. It is a ripoff. It spoils what would otherwise be a wonderful series. So why did I buy it? Of course I am going to buy it because I love the series. I can't not buy it. But it irritates me to no end that this is becoming a trend and no way I will ever rate one well.

Story

Too short for a book needs to be longer for a full credit. 1/2 credit is the value

Nice to read but not a must

The books in the series are really long, we appreciate that, and on top of that now there's a "novella". We don't like novellas but I don't begrudge the author because the books are otherwise complete. This is for that little extra story and fleshes out what's going on with the "official" United States, President Briggs and most importantly, Abe.

A great little story

A great little short story that gives you a more in depth work of what led up to the final scenes of Fractured. A quick read with tons of action al really wet my appetite for the next book Allegiance!

As always Mr. Rummel does great with the narration of these gritty action books.

Better story. It wasn't for me.

What could David Achord have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Mr. A chord wrote it for guys. I'm not a guy. It wasn't made for everyone. I love zombie genre but I imagine as a 40-something woman I'm not the target audience for most of them.

I feel like the author was channeling a teenaged boys fantasy. It really turned me off, as a non-teenaged boy. The first story was good. I'm about halfway through this one & I literally don't care what happens. I'm not going to read/listen anymore.

Absolutely not

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He had no apparent enthusiasm for the book. Very little feeling put into the characters and they pretty much all sounded the same.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was disappointed by this book to the point that I couldn't finish listening to it. I thought this book had potential but as I got into it I got the impression that it seemed to be written by a teenager for a teenager.

Man oh man... this series takes a nose dive here

I enjoyed the first book in this series a lot. I called out the only fault being the sappy teenage romance. Not really a romance but the imaginings of a teenage writer thats never experienced romance.

Z14 has almost NO zombie action. and the strife between survivors is weak. Its really just a sappy romance. Sappy bad romance written by someone that knows nothing. So this is bad.

Is Zach the Messiah or just a very naughty boy?

Normally when I finish listening to a title I write the review straight away. But this time I thought I would take a couple of days and think a bit more carefully about this one. I am glad I did as I was able to actually discover the reason why I had liked it so much.

That reason is simple, it makes feel young. There is no doubt the age of the main character and his girlfriends help this, some of the story line regarding the relationships around Zach makes it feel like every teenage boys dream.

Once again a lot of detail is left out of some of the more graphic story line... another indicator of the target market.

Ok with all of that said and with me being middle aged bloke who does read/listen a lot and not just in the zombie genre. I also have two teenage children, which enables me to really understand why some species eat their own young. I like to think I am a bit more mature than the average teenager. Despite all of this I still enjoyed this series! I dont think I could listen to a lot of this type one after another but it is good to bring out that young teenage person hidden within.

I notice some have commented about the narrators lack of emotion.

Better than the second book

I am trying to stay with this series because I really like the concept and I liked the first book. But though it was a vast improvement over the second book in the series, there are some things that he can leave out. Please, PLEASE stop comparing the main character and his "group" to military contractors!! It is beyond annoying. I'm so sick of hearing about how great they look. At least twenty minutes of listening time seem total seem to be devoted to just that!!! And how can he say someone is a hero/gunman because they have been to the range and "are wearing cool gear?" Really?? All the guy has done is just that, drive around escorting people, stand duty, and flash his concealed carry permit like it was a badge and show his weapon! It made me rather embarrassed for both the character and the writer. He could do better- I can tell because of the first book. Also, a Marine SNCO would never leave part of his Marines behind like that- not with the excuse of not knowing where their loyalties lay. He would know. We know our Marines. Especially when you work in that type of special duty environment. There were other mistakes as well but overall the concept is sound though again the politics are so one-sided that it makes you want to throw up a little in your mouth every time he goes on a political rant because I wouldn't trust either party with my trash, much less rebuilding the United States. When the country finally does get to this point, they did it together. But I am sure that the political parties will try to take power in each state and start war on each other if they could.

Not a good story

What disappointed you about The Community?

I was excited to listen to this series because it takes place in my home state, but I just couldn't take the biases of the author along with the story. The character in the book comes off pompous and arrogant. I got to book three thinking it would get better.
