    Publisher's Summary:
Quite simply, what could go wrong did go wrong. Given the choice between assuming leadership of a situation that is pure chaos, where the National Guard is forced into a position of going to war against a trapped and possibly infected citizenry, the President chooses to punt. He knows what enforcing a quarantined zone will require: the massacre of tens of thousands of terrified people demanding to get out, and there is no way he's going to have his name and legacy sullied. Suddenly a states' rights champion, he leaves the situation under the control of the Governor of New York, but not before hampering the men on the lines with rules of engagement that are meant to sooth journalists instead of creating a possibility of victory.
Tasked with the impossible, General Collins, commander of the 42nd Infantry Division is in a meeting with the Governor when the perimeter of the quarantine zone is ruptured. When his command post is overrun he's grinding his teeth, sitting in front of the President as he smiles for the cameras, makes jokes and demands answers. And in the dead of night when 100,000 infected persons slug it out toe-to-toe with the fractured remains of his division, he is the only reinforcement available to shoulder a rifle.
Inside the Zone, the survivors of Day One are dying by the score as Dr. Lee and her friends, hopelessly fight their way from one end of the Zone to the other, desperate to escape. But there is no way out except through death at the ripping teeth of the undead. Striving to put that horrible moment off for as long as possible, she finds herself trapped alongside Anna Holloway and Lieutenant - they are three scorpions in a bottle...a bottle surrounded by countless undead.

    Excellent Continuation Of The Series
This book picks up right where the following ended. The entire book is set in day 2. The second half did get a little boring with the relentless military talk, but I can overlook that. This book isn't quite as good as the first day, because of the military, but I'll still rate it overall 5 stars. Can't wait for day 3!
    awesome
definitely one of the better zombie books I've read. you should definitely download this. it is definitely not a Heroes book but a true depiction of what would really happen if zombies were real
    Great book 2
If you liked the first in the series, this book will not disappoint you. Again, great narration.
The zombies are still people, just bloodthirsy
I was worried after reading so many of Peter Meredith's books, I thought that I would not remember what happened in book one of War of the Undead. As soon as I started this memories of that book came piling in. It helps that Peter Meredith peppers hints from the previous book. They are scattered throughout so reading these a year apart would not be a big deal. Although, I would definitely recommend reading book one prior to book two.
This did seem to jump right in where book one left off. There are many, many characters but the main few who did survive are in this. Interestingly enough, I forgot that the government tried to put up a quarantine zone. As the book progresses the characters that are involved are those in that quarantine blockade and those in the zone.
Since this is another zombie book, some may ask why they should read this.

    Publisher's Summary:
When the enemy discovers their hidden home, Mirikami is forced to lead 117 Kobani ships in a desperate attack against 3,000 Krall ships and uncounted warriors. Armed with a 22,000-year-old computer virus, and sheer courage, they must disable every enemy ship and weapon. The last time this tactic was tried against them, the Krall eradicated the entire Olt'kitapi civilization.
That's just one foe the Kobani face. The PU president rejects diplomatic recognition of the new Galactic Federation, and diplomat Mirikami is ordered arrested for genetic crimes and for provoking Krall attacks on Hub worlds. To reveal the president's duplicity in a secret deal with the Krall leader, he accepts a life or death challenge fight with an old enemy, right on the capitol steps, with news cameras rolling.
Then, proving the galaxy remains a dangerous place, the huge Thandol Empire, a former Olt'kitapi enemy, forcefully announces that its elephantine rulers intend to annex the Orion Spur. That happens to be where both the Kobani led Galactic Federation, and Human Space reside. Naturally, the Kobani decline the Empire's violently phrased demands, doing it in their typically harsh and forceful manner.
In leading up to that confrontation, the Kobani learn the basis of the Empire's claim to Federation Space, and it predates the Krall conquests. The prior owners may have a claim. The Empire's initial punitive reaction to Kobani rejection reveals they have a pain causing nerve weapon, used for crowd control in the Empire. This mild sounding weapon proves to be devastating to those with organic superconducting nerves. Life on Koban could be wiped out by a riot control ship.

FANTASTIC! (And Book 6 is on it's way to Audible!)
In Book 5 of the series, Steve Bennett takes us to an whole new level of strange alien fun time! (Hang on to your support post!)
Everything the Kobani have learned and achieved in the 20 plus years since the start of the Krall invasion is finally turned on their enemy. With the technical support of their alien friends on Haven, the Kobani have added even more enhancements, and have a far great number of new Kobani in their ranks, as they desperately pursue the Krall and their deadliest weapon yet, through human space in a frantic effort to save the human home world: EARTH!
And just when the Kobani thought it might be safe to go home and start a Federation of their own, new neighbors come to call . . . and they're not nice guys!
The action is non-stop, the aliens are stranger than ever, and it ends with a very surprising "BANG!" (Every time I read this book I think it's my favorite in the series -- but that's how I feel about all of the books!)
HEY KOBAN FANS!!!: Book 6 is hot off production and should be cleared for Audible purchase by November 15th -- still with Eric Michael Summerer as the narrator!
    I. CAN. NOT.

    War!
All Gordon Van Zandt wanted was to find a safe place for his family to settle down after civilization came to an abrupt end following the detonation of a super-EMP over North America. Through hardship and loss he found a sanctuary in the mountains of Idaho; however, the realities of the new world again come crashing down when his brother, Sebastian, is murdered by a deranged US Army officer hell-bent on crushing a secessionist movement Gordon had no part of. Forced to take sides in a conflict he sought to avoid, he comes to realize that if his family is to have peace, he'll have to go to war to secure it.
With revenge in his heart and an army at his disposal, he goes on the offensive against the very country he once swore an allegiance to defend.
President Conner's forceful determination to prevent the country from fracturing only hastened it. Faced with all-out war against the newly formed Republic of Cascadia in the Northwest and with other secessionist movements gaining steam, he discovers he's an isolated man with few options for victory.
War is hell and now many will find out how true that is.

    Good book
I wish they would not switch narrators so often, but other than that love the series
Awesome Finally after giving back to back
Very low ratings I was able to return to the five star ratings. This was really part 3 of the story. While Mr. Hopf labels it part 5 I feel as though part 3 & 4 are the same story that is already told, just from a different characters point of view. As a faithful reader, and one who is willing to pay a credit for very good but also very short books, I feel as though these short duplicates from the same story should certainly not cost an entire credit. Maybe a $3.00 offering which would be a token for his faithful fans and a lure to potential ones. I am in this fir the long haul and can't wait for the next "real" book in the series to come out.
    Excellent!
Yet another great book in this series. Very well written. Great subplots & ancillary characters!
    The story Just gets better
great story and continues the Van Zandt chronicles in Post EMP America.realistic battles and portrayals of situations faced by people struggling to survive. great series highly recommended
A great continuation of the series
    Any additional comments?
Although during this series we have had two narrators, both of whom I found excellent I felt having Joseph Morton back as Narrator took me back to the beginning and made the series that more enjoyable.
The story itself took some turns I found interesting and albeit a challenge to how I thought the story would go the changes were good.
Looking forward to the next book

When confronted with that evil, fight or flight are their only choices, however, Neil's small group is hamstrung, forced to take on more refugees who come to them empty-handed, unarmed, and hungry. Neil is faced with the disturbing prospect of guiding them across 2,000 miles of zombie-plagued land, only to stumble at his first hurdle: the mighty Mississippi has become a river of death and, like the fabled River Styx, the only way to pass is to pay the river man his fee. His price: warm bodies.

    Jillybean!
great narrator!! of all the zombie apocalypse audible titles I've listened to (there are a lot of good ones) , this series has posibly the best story and certainly the best character development. These apocalyptic stories are often more about the human condition and response to crisis than they are about the "horror and gore" and Meredith has really nailed it with this series, you can't help but root for these characters and their struggle.
    Same story line
This is where I'm taking a break in the series. I actually already own the next 2 books, but it's been the very same story line since book 2. Someone gets kidnapped or is held hostage and the others have to save him or her. It's the same story over and over. In this book, someone gets kidnapped, they're rescued. Then others are kidnapped and they have to be rescued. Then yet again, more are kidnapped and they must be rescued. Then the book ends as one group is rescued, but the others are AGAIN held hostage. (There were so many kidnapping and rescues that I honestly lost count) You have to get the next book to see how the current hostages are rescued. At this point, I just don't care.
If Grey is the new Ram, give him some cajones and stop letting him wither every time the main bad guy tells him "if you don't give yourself up, I'll kill everyone." The whole "let's go talk to the bad guy and even though he's a slaver, torturer, rapist, sells babies to pedophiles, etc., I'm sure he'll be honest and keep his word........oh, he lied to us last time and took us hostage to torture us, but this time he'll keep his word and not capture us.......oh shucks, he took us hostage again and we escaped, but THIS TIME he'll keep his word, so let's go back and discuss this with him again" story line is just STUPID.
Oh, and there's very very little zombie action in this book.
Narrator did a superb job, as always.
And lastly, I love the new female character.

Title: Beacon 23: The Complete Novel
    Author: Hugh Howey

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
This work contains the five Beacon 23 stories, originally released in serialized form.
For centuries, men and women have manned lighthouses to ensure the safe passage of ships. It's a lonely job, and a thankless one for the most part - until something goes wrong, until a ship is in distress.
In the 23rd century, this job has moved into outer space. A network of beacons allows ships to travel across the Milky Way at many times the speed of light. These beacons are built to be robust. They never break down. They never fail.
At least, they aren't supposed to.
    Members Reviews:
Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination
Much like light houses in our current world, in the vase sea of space there are beacons to guide ships along safe passages. Digger is the man who monitors beacon 23; it is a lonely job with minimal contact with others. The problem is, spending that much time with only your dark thoughts as company can break a man, or make him crazy.
First, this is 5 stand alone stories compiled, therefore after listening to the first story all subsequent stories will re-introduce you to information you've already learned, making them a little redundant.
At the beginning I had to rewind a few times because the narrator was so intense that I almost felt overwhelmed and confused, and I was worried I was missing things. I grew to appreciate the intensity and commitment of Ryan McCarthy's interpretation of Digger; the narration was the thing that I enjoyed most about this book.
Since each story should stand alone I would expect it to be more eventful, but I found this omnibus to be anti-climactic. I'd never read a book by Hugh Howey before but I've heard a lot of great things and I was very excited for this book, but at the end I felt unimpressed and underwhelmed.
Conclusion: Very strong narration. Good character development through the first two stories, and some of the third but takes a turn after that. I don't think all of the stories are worth listening to, but I don't think it's a lost cause.
    Howey Rocks!!
It was just last summer I got turned onto "Wool" by Hugh Howey & it was stellar. Loved it and it's subsequent tomes enough to search out every last word I could find by the guy & so far it's all been fantastic. These stories have such interesting and unique plots, very fresh in a genre with a lot of stale ideas. Also while this is being presented as a novel it, like his "Silo Saga" stories, was originally released in serial form in digital & paper publications and I feel as though that lends something to the final product as a whole. Have to test that theory out. Anyways a great book thats well read and will surely entertain you!
    Conflicted Unknown Soldier
Better than average story w/ so many layers and intriguing literary vehicles... Joys, sadness, depression, humor, love, and selflessness ar all on display, many simultaniously... The idea of self isolation/exile and introspective internal dialogues are fascinating and thoughtful... The main character is tragic and relatable... The nameless soldier vehicle is masterfully administered, and sneakily proposed... Empathy and going along w/ the needs of the many as to a few is weaved throughout... Even though unnamed the operator is known to us as he touches on common feelings and frailties...

    Publisher's Summary:
An acclaimed "5 Under 35" fiction writer's much-anticipated first novel
In 2012 Claire Vaye Watkins' story collection, Battleborn, swept nearly every award for short fiction. Now this young writer, widely heralded as a once-in-a-generation talent, returns with a first novel that will more than meet listeners' hopes, harnessing the sweeping vision and deep heart that made her debut so arresting to a love story set in a devastatingly imagined near future.
In a parched Southern California of the near future, Luz, once the poster child for the country's conservation movement, and Ray, an army deserter turned surfer, are squatting in a starlet's abandoned mansion. Most "Mojavs", prevented by armed vigilantes from freely crossing borders to lusher regions, have allowed themselves to be evacuated to encampments in the east. Holdouts like Ray and Luz subsist on rationed cola and water and whatever they can loot, scavenge, and improvise.
For the moment, the couple's fragile love, which somehow blooms in this arid place, seems enough. But when they cross paths with a mysterious child, the thirst for a better future begins. Heading east, they are waylaid in the desert by a charming and manipulative dowser - a diviner for water - and his cultlike followers, who have formed a colony in a mysterious sea of dunes.
Immensely moving, profoundly disquieting, and mind-blowingly original, Watkins' novel explores the myths we believe about others and tell about ourselves, the double-edged power of our most cherished relationships, and the shape of hope in a precarious future that may be our own.

    A Tough Look at a Not-too-Distant Future
    Any additional comments?
I have so many conflicting feelings about this book, but I think that comes from how complicated the female protagonist is. Luz is a broken as a person can possibly be, but continues to find the strength to carry on. As her choices, and often mistakes, continue to affect all those on her journey with her, you will fluctuate between hope and despair. In a not-too-distant future world where the earth has used up it's resources and the horizon looks bleak, there is not much that is uplifting about this novel. But it's honest, brutally honest. I was immersed in it from beginning to end and upon finishing the book, have only been looking for someone to talk to about it.
    Heartbreaking and real
I hate Luz and I love her. She's so much like so many people I know. In the end she does exactly as you know she should but you hate her for it. It's a really sad story but it's compelling and beautifully written. There are places where you go 'what the hell is happening??' But the story is really good and I loved this book.
Depressing...yet the story was well written
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'm giving the Story only 3 * because it was such a depressing story, yet well written. If you like those kind of books, this one is the book for you. For me, it left me feeling empty and sad.
    narrator ruined it
I can't really speak to the story because I couldn't make it very far. The reason is that the infuriatingly idiotic narrator pronounces the main character's name wrong the entire time.

A brand-new series by the author of the best-selling Crimson Worlds saga.
Terrence Compton is one of Earth's greatest admirals, a warrior almost without equal. Alongside his oldest friend and brilliant colleague, Augustus Garret, he and his forces saved Earth from invasion by the robotic legions of the First Imperium's insane computer Regent. There is just one problem. The First Imperium was held back by the disruption of the sole warp gate connecting the two domains...and Compton and 300 of his ships are trapped on the wrong side, surrounded by the Regent's vast fleets and cut off from Earth.
Pursued by their deadly enemy, Compton and his fleet must flee into the darkness of unexplored space, seeking safety...and ultimately a new home. Their journey will take them deep into the heart of the First Imperium, to the silent, windswept worlds where the ancient race that built the Regent once dwelled...and uncover the lost secrets of its disappearance 500,000 years ago.

IT WAS BRAVADO MORE THAN REASON
THE COLLOSSUS WAS VIRTUALLY SURROUNDED BY LEVIATHANS
I liked the book, it entertained me, which is what I ask for above all else. It takes place in space on spaceships. No planet of the week, time travel, romance, or scientific jargon. No detailed taking apart and putting back together of weapons. The story was predictable, matter of fact I kept thinking I had heard it before, but I had not. It was a lot like a 1950's war movie, with the cheese so thick you could cut it with a knife, but sometimes that is what I want. I don't want a steady diet of it, but it was a nice upbeat patriotic read.
    I AM JUST A MAN
I must agree with another reviewer that Admiral Compton, the main character was a bit ego maniacal. Yet, he was an admiral and he was trying to save Earth. Democracy rarely works in these types of situations. While Admiral Compton was similar to a Captain Picard, it was a shame that the bad guys had to be Chinese and Russian. Roddenberry would have found better bad guys.
    The narrator was good.
    Good story, but ...
Narration is perfect. Jay Snyder is always good.
The story is interesting. For me the irritating problem is that the author loves repetition as though he doesn't have faith that the reader GOT it the first time around. Sometimes that repetition would go on and on until I felt like fast forwarding so I could hear more of the story and less repetition of what had already been said. If someone reduced the repetition, the book would be shorter but more enjoyable.
    Trapped behind enemy lines
Jay Allen's Into the Darkness is the 1st installment of the Crimson Worlds Refugees series. Earth has been saved by the destruction of the only known warp gate into the earth's solar system which has come under attack by a machine intelligence that appears to be the only remaining remnant of an extinct race. To manage the maneuver, Admiral Compton and 300 of his ships take on the suicide mission of holding the line on the other side of the gate and become trapped in Imperium space with no way home. The tale describes their journey deeper into the dead realm as they encounter alien artifacts, unstoppable robot war machines, and internal dissension and mutiny.
The sci-fi elements focus largely on physics with interstellar travel and high tech weaponry and assorted gadgets.

not a continuation of any other book :(
I think it's misleading to call this book 6 of Revelation space. Although these two short stories are interesting in their own right, other than existing in the same universe they have no bearing on the other books. And while I enjoyed the stories, I would have been happier if it was called: "Tales From Revelation Space". That said, high scores for awesome storytelling and a great narrative performance.
Two short stories, not worth the price
I love Reynold's books as a whole, but this disappointed me. I expected that a $22 book would be longer than this. Both stories seem like they were just the set up for a larger plot.
The End of the RS Road
Would you listen to Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days again? Why?
Not sure I would listen again but I enjoyed the heck out of it. I have listened to all of hte Revelation Space books and stories and this was the last one in the series for me. It provided great context to the conjoiners, the Melding Plague and Greenfly. If you have come this far you will enjoy it. I am not sure this is the entry point for new RS readers, I would complete the novels first.
What other book might you compare Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days to and why?
Galactic North. These are shorter stories, with a different tone than the series. These stories are a bit darker and Turquoise Days brings the Greenfly element into the story that was only hinted at the end of Absolution Gap. If Reynolds writes additional stories in this universe I have a feeling that the parallel universe's of Greenfly will play a part and Turquoise Days sets that up.
Have you listened to any of John Lees other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to at last 10 other books read by John Lee. He is a master and this book compares favorably to his best work.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Diamond Dogs and Turquoise Days
    Any additional comments?
If you enjoyed the RS Series this book is a must. I realize a credit for a 6 hour book is a bit steep but it is well done and is important in understanding the RS Universe and where it might be headed in the future.
Virtuoso sci-fi, but not for RS newbies
    Any additional comments?
If one can be a sci-fi virtuoso, Alastair Reynolds is it. You enjoy his work immensely, but you can never figure out how he does it.
Diamond dog, Turquoise days are two short stories/novellas.

Its when hes playing that he feels closest to his father, a champion gamer who died when Zack was a baby.
He rises up the ranks until theres only one other player who can challenge his worldwide supremacy. As he closes in on his ultimate enemy, the game suspiciously shuts down, leading Zack to investigate the many urban legends and myths that surround Armada. What he finds will take him beyond his wildest dreams.
The game was just the beginning....

    A Sci-Fi Great
Loved it! Ernest Cline writes another engrossing book I can't stop read/listening to. Obviously hard to follow up after Ready Player One and many themes are similar here, but still delightful though at times it did sound a little too similar to Enders Game.
The narration is the the best! Will Wheaton is frickin amazing as the narrator. Different voices and characters come alive and just add and pump up this book to new heights.
    Great Book!
Pretty good, hey. A sea of pop culture references again. Story line was a little derivative, but credit was definitely given where it was due. A very pleasant read.
Wants to be Ready Player One, but falls short
Has similar themes to the excellent Ready Player One (80s culture, video games, global scale competing), but I just didnt find the story that interesting. Look forward to the author doing something different in their next book.
A must-listen for fans of the genre
Yes. It's no Ready Player One" (how could it be?) but (proud) geekdom will still find this a highly satisfying and heartening offering from the same author. And, really, what can be better than Wil Wheaton once again taking us on the joyride?
It's not life altering (probably) and is just a tad heavy handed somehow in dishing out some of its pop culture pearls (the very beauty of Cline's work I know and agree) but you will enjoy the storytelling way too much to let that detract.
Fun, quirky, way too many pop culture references
Fun listen with Will doing an excellent, as usual. Does feel like a ride on the nostalgia train, using pop culture references like nails to embed you in the story, as if referencing The Thing or Star Trek will somehow make it feel more based in reality and more intriguing, despite being pretty average. Do read, it's still fun.

    Publisher's Summary:
In a world where the British nobility comes to power because they have magical abilities, the American Revolution of 1776 never got beyond a few angry protests to Parliament. The colonists didn' t stand a chance against a ruling class with that much power. Now it's 1888, and an underground society of mechanics, scientists, and engineers is developing nonmagical sources of power via steam engines and electric dynamos that they hope will put them on an even - or superior - footing so they can overthrow the magical rulers and gain freedom and independence for the American colonies.
When Verity Newton comes to New York City to serve as young governess to one of the leading magical families, she accidentally befriends several rebel mechanics. They recruit her as the perfect spy to gain inside information on the magister class in a magical Gilded Age New York. Even though Verity fights for the rebel cause, she's torn because she feels more at home with the blue-blood Lyndon children and their young guardian uncle than she ever did with her own family. She also feels the strain of her own secret, which would turn the rebels against her and cause her to be shut away by the magisters: She's half magical herself - born of an illicit relationship between her mother and a magister man. Her very existence is seen as a threat to the purity of the magical bloodline.
Meanwhile her employer, Lord Henry, has his own secret. Verity is increasingly convinced that he's the Robin Hood-like leader of a band of magical rebels working to free the colonies from British rule. As the actions of the rebel mechanics and the rebel magisters gain the attention of the Crown, Verity realizes that it will take both groups to achieve American independence, and she's uniquely situated to bring them together - that is if they can survive long enough once the city comes under martial law and the British forces stop at nothing to uncover the rebels and seize their machines.

    Shanna Swendson is brilliant!
What did you love best about Rebel Mechanics?
This is TOTALLY a fun story. Her Fairy Tale series is good and her Katie Chandler series is absolutely terrific. This series is really, really good. I can't wait for it to evolve.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Oh, Henry is wonderful. Alex is good, but I love the absent-minded professor who turns out to be super-spy the best.
Have you listened to any of Liz Pearces other performances before? How does this one compare?
I'm not sure I have. I'll have to check that out.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It wasn't one sitting, but it was one day, but only because I kept getting interrupted.
    Any additional comments?
There is noting as good as Shanna's Katie Chandler series (although I have to wait a little bit to see if I can get used to the reader - I've read the first 4 books so many times, the reader didn't sound good to my ears), but this comes in a close second. The future books will tell. Thanks, Shanna.
A good beginning to a series
Light, fun, steam, gears, magic... a good realization of a great premise. I liked it.
    Magic and Steampunk!
What a great book. Follow the exploits of Verity Newton, new come to New York to find work as a nanny.
