As I was decorating for Christmas the song, Mary Did You Know came on.  I sat for a moment and pondered on the lyrics. Think about it, Mary knew that she was carrying the son of God but she did not know to what magnitude Jesus was going to change the world.  She said yes out of obedience to God and from her obedience came the greatest gift of all.  As moms, we too need to be obedient and embrace motherhood with all that we have so we can raise our children to be the next influential speaker, Pastors, teachers, and world changers. I pray during this holiday season that you continue to ponder on the miracle of Jesus‘s birth and the birth of your own children and the heavy accountability and honor we hold as moms.

Today's episode is a thought provoker. I recently read an article titled the collapse of parenting. The crux of the article is that many today are  em powering children from a very young age by allowing them to make choices and being emotionally available at all times. The problem is the kids are actually overpowering their parents in the long run. Dr. Sax goes on to say that a functional family unit hinges on a strong alpha presentation to inspire the child to trust you and depend on you and if we don’t have that then we’re hard-pressed to make the demand or set the limit for the child.

In other words, the parent always has to be honored as the ultimate person and we need to put parents back in the driver's seat. 

The bottom line is kids are not born knowing right from wrong and when they are left to discover right from wrong on their own they are more likely to have negative outcomes in the future medically and emotionally speaking -these children in their late 20s are more likely to be depressed, anxious less likely to be healthy and more likely to be addicted to alcohol and drugs. it’s proven that parents who  are authoritative have better outcomes overall  we can respect the  child but also be the ones to make the decisions

Today’s podcast is from real-life experience as well as from the book the power of showing up by Daniel Segal and Tina Bryson. We all know that parenting isn’t easy but our greatest impact begins with showing up in our children’s lives with a quality of presence. We  touch on basic building blocks such as feeling safe, seen and soothed which will in turn create secure attachments. We need to continually fight against the demands the world has been putting on us, digital distractions, parenting philosophies that are anti-biblical and so much more. let’s make a choice to be fully present in our children’s lives so we can provide the best emotional landscape for them.

Personal power and complacency cannot coexist. We are so focused and worried about what we can leave our kids financially for an inheritance but it’s not about what we can leave them it’s what we leave IN them that really counts. Philosophies and parenting styles come and go but true biblical values and virtues will always remain. We must be careful we are not choosing to excuse poor behavior. We need to challenge our children to be better daily. Teamwork, self-care, seeing possibilities where other people see problems, motivation, time management, and kindness are just a few traits we must teach them to live IN them to succeed. Character development should be our top priority so when they do well they are able to manage because they have what it takes IN them and then they can not only flourish but can continue to make a  difference in the world.

We all have dreams and expectations for our children which is wonderful however we cannot superimpose our own dreams. Our children were created with a plan and a purpose and we need to step aside and allow them to step into their destiny. Let’s commit to helping  them dream big and allow  them to dream their own dreams and not live ours.

Are we raising givers or takers? Overindulgence cripples our children so we need to take a few minutes to assess whether we are doing this.  Although parents are well-intentioned, Too much of anything isn’t good.  Let’s raise children who are givers not takers and are a blessing to be with.

One of my favorite child psychologists is Dr. James Dobson. The title of today’s podcast was pulled directly from his book the strong-willed  child part two. He states appeasement for a strong-willed child is an invitation to warfare. I expound on this during the podcast today and provide real-life scenarios of the truth of that saying. Our job is to prepare our children for the next stage in life and it all starts with the heart of our child. We need to nip poor behaviors during the formative years so we do not have to deal with them in the teenage years. If we simply appease our children, particularly when they are strong-willed it truly is an invitation to warfare. Let’s have peace not war in our homes and begin making changes today.

Narrow the road is based off of proverbs 22:6 . The importance of following through helps our children learn the difference between good and poor behavior. We don’t want our children to think the world bends toward every one of their needs. Today we take a closer look at Proverbs  22:6 the promise verses the warning it provides us. As parents, we are called to narrow the road for our children to help them understand parameters currently and as they grow into adulthood. Simply following through and narrowing the road is a powerful parenting tool you can start implementing today if you haven’t already done so.
